Chapter 2 - The Man Who Chose To Protect Her

The first man through the door raised his weapon and shouted: "Massimo Costa! Hand over the woman!"
Massimo didn’t move.
He only looked at Alessandra and noticed the way she pulled her sleeping son closer.
Then he said four words:
"She stays with me."
The room changed instantly.
Because everyone understood what those words meant.
Massimo Costa was not offering shelter.
He was declaring ownership of the danger.
Alessandra had spent the last several hours running from people who wanted her silent.
Now she was sitting in front of the one man whose name made other criminals step carefully.
And he had just placed himself between her and everyone hunting her.
She didn’t know if that made her safer.
Or if she had simply traded one nightmare for another.
The front doors remained open.
Cold air rushed into the lounge.
Four men stood outside.
Black coats.
Serious faces.
The kind of people who didn’t arrive to negotiate.
Every person in the room looked toward Massimo.
Waiting.
Watching.
Judging what he would do.
Alessandra noticed something strange.
Nobody moved until he did.
Not one person.
Massimo slowly stood from his chair.
His suit was perfectly arranged except for the blood on his cuff.
He looked completely calm.
Almost bored.
But Alessandra noticed his eyes.
They weren’t bored.
They were calculating.
"Who sent you?" Massimo asked.
The man in front smiled.
A cold smile.
"You already know."
Massimo didn’t answer.
The man looked past him.
Toward Alessandra.
"She doesn’t belong here."
Alessandra felt Leo move slightly beside her.
She immediately placed a hand on his back.
The man noticed.
His expression changed.
"That’s the kid?"
Nobody spoke.
But Alessandra felt the entire room become dangerous.
Massimo’s face became empty.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Empty.
And somehow that was worse.
"Say that again."
The man looked at him.
"I said the kid—"
He never finished.
Massimo moved faster than Alessandra expected.
One second he was standing across the room.
The next, he was directly in front of the man.
No shouting.
No dramatic movement.
Just a sudden shift in the air.
Massimo grabbed the man’s collar.
"Choose your next words carefully."
The man looked at him.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
Because he realized something.
Massimo Costa was not protecting Alessandra because she was useful.
He was protecting her because he had decided to.
And that was something far more dangerous.
Massimo released him.
"Leave."
The man laughed quietly.
"You think this changes anything?"
Massimo stared at him.
"No."
A pause.
"It changes everything."
The four men slowly backed away.
Not because they wanted to.
Because they understood the message.
They had entered Massimo Costa’s territory.
And they had failed.
The doors closed.
The room finally breathed again.
Alessandra looked at Massimo.
"You could have killed them."
Everyone nearby froze.
Nobody expected her to say that.
Massimo turned toward her.
"And you think I should have?"
She looked at him.
"I think you wanted them to know you could."
A small silence followed.
Then something unexpected happened.
Massimo smiled.
Not a friendly smile.
Not a happy one.
A surprised one.
"You notice too much."
"I had to."
She looked down at Leo.
"When you’re alone with a child, you learn to notice everything."
The smile disappeared from Massimo’s face.
For a moment, he looked at Leo differently.
Not as a weakness.
As a reminder.
"You’ve been alone a long time."
Alessandra didn’t answer.
Because he was right.
She had spent years learning how to survive.
How to work harder.
How to smile when she was exhausted.
How to pretend she wasn’t scared.
How to make sure Leo never saw the fear in her eyes.
Massimo returned to the table.
He sat across from her.
"You’re going to tell me everything."
Alessandra looked at him.
"Is that an order?"
"Yes."
She almost laughed.
"You really think everyone listens to you?"
The men around them became uncomfortable.
Nobody talked to Massimo like that.
But Massimo only watched her.
"You’re sitting at my table."
She looked around.
"Because I needed a chair."
"And yet you walked into the only room in Manhattan where nobody would dare touch you."
Alessandra looked away.
She hated that he was right.
Massimo opened the folder again.
He removed several documents.
"They framed you."
Her eyes moved to the papers.
"I know."
"No."
He pushed them toward her.
"You know someone is trying to frame you."
He tapped the pages.
"You don’t know who."
Alessandra looked down.
The documents showed company transfers.
Fake accounts.
Hidden payments.
Her own digital signature.
But there was something else.
A name.
A person she knew.
Someone she trusted.
Her face changed.
Massimo noticed.
"Who is it?"
She didn’t answer.
"Alessandra."
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
"My supervisor."
"Your supervisor created the accounts?"
"No."
Her voice became quieter.
"He approved my access."
Massimo leaned back.
"So someone close to you helped build the trap."
Alessandra looked at Leo.
She hated how familiar that sentence sounded.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
The enemy was not a stranger.
Someone had watched her work.
Someone had learned her habits.
Someone knew exactly how to destroy her life.
Massimo watched her carefully.
"You copied the files."
It wasn’t a question.
Alessandra looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because if you didn’t, you wouldn’t still be alive."
She stayed silent.
Massimo continued.
"The people hunting you don’t care about the money."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Then what do they care about?"
He looked toward the folder.
"The file you took."
Alessandra felt a chill.
"I copied thousands of documents."
"Not documents."
Massimo reached into his jacket.
He placed a small black drive on the table.
Alessandra stared at it.
"You know what that is?"
She shook her head.
"No."
Massimo looked at her.
"Yes, you do."
Her heartbeat increased.
Because she suddenly remembered.
Before leaving her office, she had copied one final folder.
A folder hidden inside another folder.
A file with no name.
No description.
Only a number.
She had ignored it.
Until now.
"You found it," she whispered.
Massimo didn’t deny it.
"The people chasing you would burn half the city to get it back."
Alessandra stared at the drive.
"What’s inside?"
Massimo’s expression became serious.
"Something that can destroy powerful people."
The room went silent.
Leo shifted again.
Alessandra immediately covered him with the blanket.
Massimo noticed.
"You should rest."
She looked at him.
"Rest?"
"Yes."
"People are trying to kill me."
"And you’re holding a sleeping child after running through Manhattan for hours."
His voice became quieter.
"You’re exhausted."
Alessandra hated that he sounded right.
She hated even more that she trusted him for a second.
"Why are you helping me?"
Massimo didn’t answer immediately.
That surprised her.
A man like him should have had an easy answer.
Money.
Power.
Information.
But instead, he looked at Leo.
Then back at her.
"Because someone decided a mother and child were disposable."
Alessandra studied his face.
"That bothers you?"
Massimo looked away.
For a brief moment, the cold mafia boss disappeared.
And she saw something else.
A memory.
A wound.
Something he refused to explain.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone in the room immediately became alert.
Massimo looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Concern.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly stood.
"What happened?"
The man on the other end spoke too quietly for Alessandra to hear.
But she saw Massimo’s reaction.
His hand tightened around the phone.
"What do you mean she was found?"
Alessandra froze.
She didn’t know who he was talking about.
But she knew one thing.
The danger had moved closer.
Massimo ended the call.
He looked at his men.
"Nobody leaves this building."
Then he looked directly at Alessandra.
And for the first time since she entered the lounge, his voice sounded different.
"Alessandra..."
She looked at him.
"What?"
Massimo stared toward the private hallway behind him.
May you like
Because someone had just opened a door that was supposed to stay locked.
And standing there was the person who knew where she had been hiding.
