Chapter 6 - The Father Who Was Never Supposed To Return

“Elena’s father.”
Antonio’s words stayed in the room.
For a few seconds, Elena thought she had heard him wrong.
“My father?”
Antonio didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
Because silence had become his way of confirming things he didn’t want to say.
Elena looked toward the entrance.
The man standing outside was older than she remembered.
But she remembered him.
Not clearly.
Not completely.
Just fragments.
A deep voice.
A leather jacket.
A hand holding hers when she was little.
And then nothing.
Because one day, he was gone.
Her mother said he left.
Everyone said he left.
Elena spent years believing her father had chosen a different life over them.
But now he was standing outside.
Alive.
And somehow connected to everything.
“No,” Elena whispered.
Sofia moved closer.
“Elena…”
“No.”
She looked at her mother.
“No, you don’t get to do this.”
Her voice broke.
“You don’t get to bring back people I spent my whole life grieving.”
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.”
“Then how?”
Nobody answered.
Again.
The same silence.
The same walls.
The same secrets.
Elena laughed quietly.
“It’s unbelievable.”
Antonio watched her carefully.
She looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like every truth she discovered only created five more questions.
The front doors opened.
The man walked inside.
Every employee in the restaurant immediately froze.
He didn’t need guards.
He didn’t need an introduction.
People recognized him.
Antonio stepped forward.
The two men looked at each other.
And Elena noticed something.
They weren’t strangers.
They weren’t enemies either.
They were two people who had spent years waiting for this moment.
“Antonio.”
The man’s voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
Antonio’s expression remained cold.
“Marco.”
Elena’s heart stopped.
Marco Hart.
Her father’s name.
The name she hadn’t heard spoken in years.
Her father looked at her.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Pain.
“Elena.”
Hearing her name from him felt wrong.
Too familiar.
Too late.
She stepped back.
“Don’t.”
Marco stopped.
“I know you’re angry.”
“You have no idea.”
“I do.”
“No.”
Her voice became sharper.
“You don’t.”
She pointed toward him.
“You disappeared.”
Marco lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“You left me and my mother.”
“I know.”
“You let me think you were dead.”
His face changed.
“I never wanted that.”
“But it happened.”
Silence.
The entire restaurant seemed to disappear.
There was only Elena and the man who was supposed to be a memory.
Finally, Marco spoke.
“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.”
Elena looked away.
“That’s what people say when they want forgiveness.”
Marco accepted that.
“I deserve that.”
The answer surprised her.
Because she expected excuses.
Not acceptance.
Antonio stepped closer.
“Why are you here?”
Marco looked at him.
“Because they know.”
Sofia’s face went pale.
“Who?”
Marco looked around the restaurant.
“Everyone.”
The words made Antonio’s expression change.
“What do you mean?”
Marco lowered his voice.
“The people who wanted Sofia silent.”
A cold feeling moved through Elena.
“Who are they?”
Marco looked at her.
And for the first time, she saw fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
“You really don’t know.”
“Know what?”
Marco looked at Antonio.
Then Sofia.
“You never told her.”
Antonio didn’t respond.
Marco shook his head.
“Of course you didn’t.”
Elena looked between them.
“Told me what?”
Marco took a breath.
“The reason your mother disappeared wasn’t because she found a traitor inside Antonio’s organization.”
Antonio looked at him sharply.
“Marco.”
“No.”
Marco’s voice hardened.
“She deserves the truth.”
Elena’s heartbeat increased.
“What truth?”
Marco looked at her.
“The person your mother was trying to expose wasn’t working for Antonio.”
A pause.
“He was working with him.”
The room went silent.
Elena slowly turned toward Antonio.
Antonio’s face became unreadable.
But he didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
“You knew?”
Elena whispered.
Antonio looked at her.
“It wasn’t what you think.”
“Then what is it?”
“I made mistakes.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
Antonio’s voice lowered.
“It’s the truth.”
Elena felt betrayed.
Not because Antonio was dangerous.
She already knew that.
But because she had started believing he was different.
She had started believing he was the one person who wasn’t lying.
And now she didn’t know.
Marco stepped forward.
“The man who betrayed Sofia was someone Antonio trusted more than anyone.”
“Who?”
Antonio looked away.
Sofia closed her eyes.
She already knew.
Elena saw it.
“You know his name.”
Nobody spoke.
Then Marco said:
“Luciano Vieri.”
The name filled the room.
Elena remembered.
Luciano.
The man who smiled.
The man who knew everything.
The man who appeared whenever secrets were about to be revealed.
Antonio’s jaw tightened.
“I should have seen it.”
Sofia looked at him.
“You were too busy protecting everyone else.”
Antonio looked at her.
“And I failed.”
The sentence was quiet.
But Elena heard it.
For the first time, Antonio Moretti admitted weakness.
Not publicly.
Not to his enemies.
To them.
Marco moved closer.
“There’s more.”
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
Marco reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Damaged.
The same type of envelope her mother had received years ago.
“This belonged to Sofia.”
Sofia stared at it.
“No.”
Marco handed it to Elena.
“She wanted you to have it if she ever came back.”
Elena looked at her mother.
“You knew about this?”
Sofia nodded slowly.
“I wrote it.”
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?”
“Because I never knew if giving you the truth would save you or destroy you.”
Elena held the envelope.
Her hands shook.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
Only a few lines.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
But I need you to know one thing.
Your father never abandoned us.
Antonio Moretti never betrayed us.
The person who ruined our family was someone who wanted all of us to believe those lies.
Elena stopped reading.
Her eyes moved to the bottom.
There was a name.
A name written by her mother.
A name that made Antonio immediately step forward.
“What?”
Elena looked up.
Antonio’s face changed.
“What does it say?”
She slowly turned the paper around.
Everyone looked.
And everyone froze.
Because the name written there was not Luciano.
It was someone else.
Someone nobody had suspected.
Someone still inside Antonio’s world.
Someone who had been helping them from the beginning.
Antonio whispered:
“No.”
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
But this time, nobody moved.
Because everyone knew.
Someone was inside the building.
A phone vibrated in the darkness.
Elena looked down.
A new message appeared.
One sentence.
“Ask Antonio who really killed your father.”
Then, from the hallway, a voice called out.
“Antonio.”
Everyone turned.
May you like
A man stepped from the shadows.
And Elena recognized him.
