Chapter 3 - The Man Who Knew Her Mother’s Secret

The door handle stopped moving.

For three seconds, nobody inside the office spoke.

Elena stood frozen beside the desk, still holding her phone in her hand.

The message remained on the screen.

You are sitting with him.

Someone was watching them.

Someone knew.

Antonio Moretti did not move.

That was the most frightening part.

A man like him should have reacted.

He should have shouted.

He should have ordered someone to check every corner of the building.

Instead, he stood completely still, staring at the office door.

Like he already knew who was outside.

“Who is Luciano?” Elena whispered.

Antonio didn’t look at her.

“Someone you should never have met.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

His voice was low.

“It’s a warning.”

The footsteps outside moved again.

Slow.

Confident.

The person on the other side of the door was not afraid.

That alone told Elena something.

Everyone else in Palermo feared Antonio Moreotti.

But whoever was outside didn’t.

Antonio reached into the drawer beside his desk and removed a small object.

A gun.

Elena’s breath caught.

She stepped back.

Antonio noticed.

His expression changed slightly.

“I am not going to use it on you.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You thought it.”

She hated that he was right.

The man who had seemed strangely human moments ago had disappeared.

Now she saw the person hidden underneath.

The man people whispered about.

The man who survived because he trusted nobody.

Another knock came.

Three times.

Exactly like before.

Antonio stared at the door.

Then he spoke.

“Stay behind me.”

Elena almost laughed.

“Do you really think I’m going to stand behind a man who might be connected to my mother disappearing?”

Antonio looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I think you should stay alive long enough to hate me properly.”

The answer silenced her.

Before she could respond, the lock clicked.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

He was in his late fifties.

Tall.

Thin.

Gray hair.

A perfectly tailored navy suit.

His face carried the kind of calm confidence that came from knowing he was untouchable.

Luciano Vieri.

Elena did not know his name.

But she immediately understood why Antonio hated seeing him.

The two men looked at each other.

No anger.

No surprise.

Only history.

“Antonio,” Luciano said.

His voice was almost friendly.

“That was faster than I expected.”

Antonio kept the gun lowered but ready.

“What are you doing here?”

Luciano smiled.

“I could ask you the same thing.”

His eyes moved toward Elena.

And Elena instantly felt uncomfortable.

Not because he looked dangerous.

Because he looked like someone who already knew her.

“So this is Sofia’s daughter.”

The room became silent.

Elena felt her stomach drop.

“You knew my mother.”

Luciano looked at her.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Antonio stepped forward.

“Don’t answer him.”

Luciano ignored him.

“She was a remarkable woman.”

Elena clenched her fists.

“You knew where she went.”

Luciano’s smile disappeared slightly.

“Careful, Elena.”

Hearing her name from him made her skin crawl.

“You sound exactly like your mother.”

The words hit harder than she expected.

“What does that mean?”

Antonio interrupted.

“Leave.”

Luciano looked amused.

“Still protecting her?”

Antonio’s jaw tightened.

“I said leave.”

Luciano looked around the office.

“At one point, I thought you had forgotten how to care about anything.”

His eyes returned to Elena.

“Apparently I was wrong.”

Elena looked between them.

“What is happening?”

Neither man answered.

And that scared her.

Because silence between two powerful people usually meant the truth was worse than anyone wanted to say.

Luciano walked closer to the desk.

Antonio immediately raised the gun slightly.

“Stop.”

Luciano stopped.

Then he laughed softly.

“You really are afraid.”

Antonio’s eyes hardened.

“I’m not afraid of you.”

“No.”

Luciano looked at Elena.

“You’re afraid of what she will learn.”

Elena felt her heartbeat increase.

“What did you do?”

Antonio looked at her.

“Nothing.”

But the hesitation was there.

A tiny moment.

Almost invisible.

But Elena saw it.

And that was enough.

“You’re lying.”

Antonio looked away.

Luciano smiled.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The first crack.”

Elena turned toward Antonio.

“What happened to my mother?”

The room went quiet.

Antonio lowered the gun.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

Not weak.

Not powerless.

Just tired.

“Sofia discovered something.”

Elena waited.

“She found evidence that someone inside my organization was selling information.”

“Information about what?”

“People.”

“Names.”

“Locations.”

“Deals.”

Antonio paused.

“And families.”

Elena felt cold.

“My mother found out?”

“Yes.”

“And you protected her?”

Antonio looked down.

“I tried.”

That answer hurt more than if he had said no.

“You tried?”

“Yes.”

“But she disappeared.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was brutal.

Elena stepped back.

“You knew she was in danger.”

“Yes.”

“You let her go anyway?”

“No.”

Antonio’s voice became sharper.

“I begged her to leave the city.”

“Then why didn’t she take me?”

Silence.

That question changed everything.

Antonio looked at her.

Because he knew the answer.

Because he had carried it for twelve years.

“She thought someone was watching you.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“What?”

“She believed they would use you to find her.”

“So she left me to protect me?”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.”

“I know.”

“Because I spent twelve years thinking she chose to leave.”

Antonio’s expression softened.

“She never chose to leave you.”

Luciano watched them silently.

Then he spoke.

“Antonio.”

The older man turned.

“You should tell her the rest.”

Antonio’s eyes became cold.

“Not from you.”

Luciano smiled.

“Still protecting your secrets.”

Elena looked at Luciano.

“What rest?”

Neither answered.

She felt anger replacing fear.

“No.”

Both men looked at her.

“I am done standing here while everyone decides what I can handle.”

Her voice shook.

But she continued.

“My mother disappeared. You both knew her. Someone sent me her photograph. Someone is watching me. And you’re both acting like I’m a child who needs protection.”

Antonio stared at her.

Luciano looked almost impressed.

“You really are Sofia’s daughter.”

Elena ignored him.

“Tell me the truth.”

Antonio was silent.

Then he walked to the desk.

He opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small old necklace.

Elena recognized it immediately.

Her mother wore it every day.

Her hand moved toward her mouth.

“Where did you get that?”

Antonio held it carefully.

“She gave it to me.”

Elena stared at him.

“My mother gave you her necklace?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Antonio looked at the necklace.

“Because she knew she might not survive.”

The words landed like a punch.

Elena’s eyes filled.

“What did she say?”

Antonio closed his hand around it.

“She told me if anything happened to her…”

He stopped.

Elena waited.

“She told me to find you.”

A painful silence filled the room.

“Find me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

Antonio looked at her.

Because he had no answer that wouldn’t hurt.

Before he could speak, the lights suddenly went out.

The office became completely dark.

Elena gasped.

A sound came from the hallway.

A struggle.

A heavy impact.

Then silence.

Antonio immediately moved.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“I’m coming.”

For once, he didn’t argue.

They stepped toward the door together.

Antonio slowly opened it.

The hallway was empty.

Too empty.

Then Elena saw something on the floor.

A small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Antonio’s face changed the moment he saw it.

“No.”

Elena picked it up.

“What?”

“Don’t open it.”

But she already had.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Antonio Moretti.

Taken twelve years ago.

But that wasn’t what made Elena’s hands shake.

Behind them stood another person.

Someone she recognized.

Someone she had never expected to see.

A person who was supposed to be gone forever.

And underneath the photograph was one sentence:

“Your mother didn’t disappear. She was hiding from him.”

Elena slowly looked up at Antonio.

Then the elevator at the end of the hallway opened.

A woman stepped out.

May you like

Antonio whispered her name.

And Elena realized her entire life had been built on a lie.
