Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind The Missing Woman

Elena Hart did not sleep that night.

She sat on the edge of her small apartment bed, staring at the photograph in her hands.

Her mother’s face stared back at her.

A face she had not seen in twelve years.

For most people, a photograph was just paper.

For Elena, it was a ghost.

A reminder of every unanswered question she had carried since she was nineteen years old.

Where did her mother go?

Why did she leave without saying goodbye?

Why did everyone who knew her suddenly become silent?

Elena had spent years believing there had been a simple explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A painful choice.

But the message written on the back of the photograph changed everything.

Ask Antonio what happened.

She looked toward the window.

Outside, Palermo continued moving.

Cars passed.

People laughed on the streets.

The city looked normal.

But Elena knew something had shifted.

Because someone had placed her past directly in front of her.

And they had connected it to the most dangerous man in the city.

Don Antonio Moretti.

The next morning, Elena returned to Osteria della Luna earlier than usual.

She barely remembered walking there.

Her mind was filled with questions.

The moment she entered the restaurant, she noticed something strange.

Everyone stopped talking.

Again.

The staff looked at her differently.

Not with fear.

With curiosity.

The young waitress who had accidentally broken Antonio Moretti’s wine bottle was suddenly the person everyone wanted to know.

A waiter named Marco approached her.

“You’re alive.”

Elena frowned.

“Excuse me?”

Marco looked around before lowering his voice.

“I mean… after last night.”

She stared at him.

“Was I supposed to not be?”

Marco gave a nervous laugh.

“You really don’t understand, do you?”

“Understand what?”

He looked toward the private dining area.

“People don’t talk back to him.”

Elena placed her bag down.

“I didn’t talk back.”

Marco raised an eyebrow.

“You told him nobody got hurt.”

“That was true.”

“Yes.”

He shook his head.

“That’s exactly why everyone is confused.”

Before Elena could answer, the restaurant doors opened.

The room changed instantly.

Antonio Moretti walked in.

No guards.

No dramatic entrance.

Just a man entering a restaurant.

But somehow, everyone noticed.

He wore a dark gray suit today instead of black. His hair was neatly styled. His expression was calm.

But Elena noticed something different.

He looked tired.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like he had not slept either.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Antonio walked toward her.

“Elena.”

The way he said her name surprised her.

Not because it sounded threatening.

Because it sounded familiar.

Like he had been saying it for longer than one night.

“Mr. Moretti.”

“You can call me Antonio.”

She hesitated.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

A small silence followed.

Then something almost impossible happened.

Antonio smiled.

Not a fake smile.

Not the kind people used when they wanted something.

A real one.

Very small.

Very brief.

“You are unusual.”

“I hear that often.”

“I believe it.”

Elena looked around.

The staff had suddenly become very interested in cleaning already-clean tables.

She lowered her voice.

“Who sent me the photograph?”

Antonio’s expression changed.

The smile disappeared.

“What photograph?”

She studied his face.

Looking for a reaction.

She found one.

A tiny movement.

A slight tightening around his eyes.

Enough.

“You know.”

Antonio remained silent.

“Elena.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You don’t get to say my name like you care and then pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

The restaurant became colder.

Not because of the temperature.

Because everyone nearby realized something.

Elena Hart was challenging Antonio Moretti.

Again.

Antonio looked at her carefully.

Then he said:

“Come with me.”

She immediately shook her head.

“No.”

That surprised him.

“Why?”

“Because every person in this city looks terrified when they follow you somewhere private.”

Antonio stared at her.

“And you think I want to hurt you?”

“I think I don’t know what you want.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he nodded slowly.

“That is fair.”

The answer caught her off guard.

She expected anger.

Not understanding.

Antonio looked toward the private office door.

“Ten minutes.”

Elena hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because your mother’s disappearance is not a story you want to hear in the middle of this restaurant.”

Her entire body froze.

The noise around her disappeared.

“You knew my mother?”

Antonio looked away.

“Yes.”

The word hit harder than she expected.

“You knew her?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He paused.

And for the first time, Elena saw something she had not expected.

Regret.

“I was there the night she disappeared.”

Her hands became cold.

“You were there?”

Antonio nodded.

“But I was not the reason she vanished.”

Elena searched his face.

She wanted to believe him.

She hated that part of herself wanted to believe him.

Because believing him meant trusting the most dangerous man she had ever met.

And that was impossible.

Wasn’t it?

Inside Antonio’s private office, Elena immediately noticed one thing.

There were no signs of power.

No weapons displayed.

No photographs with important people.

No trophies.

Only books.

Old documents.

And a single framed picture turned face down on the desk.

Antonio noticed her looking at it.

“Sit.”

She remained standing.

“I’ll stand.”

He accepted that.

For a moment, he looked older.

“Your mother’s name was Sofia Hart.”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“She worked for people who had more power than they deserved.”

“Like you?”

Antonio looked at her.

The question was direct.

Most people would have apologized immediately.

Elena didn’t.

“No,” he said quietly.

“Not like me.”

“Then what were you?”

Antonio walked to the window.

“A man who made mistakes.”

She almost laughed.

“That’s what powerful people say when they don’t want to admit the truth.”

He looked back.

“You think I’m a monster.”

“I don’t know what you are.”

“That is better than believing a lie.”

Elena looked at the desk.

“Tell me what happened.”

Antonio was silent for a long time.

Then he opened a drawer.

Inside was an old envelope.

He placed it on the desk.

Elena saw the handwriting immediately.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Her breath stopped.

“She left this for you.”

Elena didn’t touch it.

“Why didn’t I get it?”

Antonio looked down.

“Because someone made sure you never would.”

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

That frightened her more than anything.

Antonio pushed the envelope toward her.

“Your mother discovered something.”

“What?”

“A secret involving people who were supposed to protect her.”

Elena slowly picked up the envelope.

Her fingers shook.

“She knew she was in danger?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she come home?”

Antonio looked at her.

“Because she believed coming home would put you in danger too.”

Elena felt tears forming.

She hated it.

She hated that after twelve years of anger, one sentence could break through everything.

“She abandoned me.”

Antonio’s voice became softer.

“No.”

“She left.”

“Yes.”

“Then how is that different?”

“Because abandoning someone means you stop caring.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“Your mother never stopped.”

Elena looked away.

The room became silent.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

She looked at the screen.

One message.

A picture.

Her blood turned cold.

It was a photo of Antonio’s office.

Taken moments ago.

From inside.

Below the picture were six words.

“You are sitting with him.”

Elena slowly raised her eyes.

Antonio noticed her expression.

“What happened?”

She showed him the phone.

His face changed instantly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“Leave.”

The sudden command shocked her.

“What?”

“Now.”

“Why?”

Antonio walked toward the door and locked it.

“Elena, listen to me carefully.”

The calm man from moments ago was gone.

Now she saw the person everyone feared.

“The person who sent that message knows where you are.”

A loud sound came from outside.

A door closing.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Approaching.

Antonio looked at the office entrance.

His hand moved toward the drawer.

Elena whispered:

“Who is that?”

Antonio did not answer.

The footsteps stopped outside.

A shadow appeared beneath the door.

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Antonio stared at the door.

And whispered one name.

May you like

“Luciano.”

The door handle slowly turned.
