Chapter 6 - The Brother Behind The Door

Alessandro Vitali had spent twenty years believing his brother was gone.
He had stood beside Luca's grave.
He had watched the family lower the coffin.
He had listened to his father say:
"Some losses cannot be repaired."
Alessandro remembered every word.
Every expression.
Every lie.
Because now he understood something terrifying.
The dead man he mourned had never been dead.
And the people who knew the truth had been standing beside him all along.
The photograph shook slightly in his hand.
Not because Alessandro was afraid.
Because he was trying to control his anger.
The person standing behind Elena and Luca in the picture was someone he knew.
Someone who had attended Luca's funeral.
Someone who had comforted him when he thought his brother was gone.
Someone who had spent years pretending to be loyal.
His father's oldest advisor.
Marco Bellini.
Alessandro looked at the photograph again.
"No."
Matteo remained silent.
"You knew."
It wasn't a question.
Matteo looked away.
"I knew Marco was involved."
Alessandro slowly turned toward him.
"Involved?"
His voice became colder.
"He destroyed my family."
Matteo didn't deny it.
And that silence was more painful than any confession.
Sofia stood beside Alessandro, holding his hand.
She didn't understand the details.
But she understood anger.
She understood fear.
Because she had lived with both her entire life.
"Who is Marco?" she asked quietly.
Alessandro looked down at her.
For a moment, he forgot about revenge.
Forgot about betrayal.
He saw only a child who had been forced to carry secrets created by adults.
"Someone who should have protected your mother."
Sofia lowered her eyes.
"My mother said people who look like protectors are sometimes the most dangerous."
Alessandro felt a chill.
Because Elena had known.
She had always known.
The question was why she never came back.
Why she never called.
Why she let him believe she was gone.
Matteo stepped closer.
"Alessandro, there is something else you need to know."
Alessandro looked at him.
"More secrets?"
Matteo accepted the anger.
"Yes."
"Then tell me everything."
Matteo glanced at Sofia.
"Not here."
Alessandro looked around the old estate.
The place where his family built power.
The place where secrets were buried.
"Why?"
"Because this house is not empty."
The words made everyone stop.
Alessandro looked toward the hallway.
"You said nobody lived here."
"I said nobody lived here officially."
Matteo lowered his voice.
"Someone has been using this place."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Matteo looked at the photograph.
"Someone waiting for you to find the truth."
A sound interrupted them.
A quiet noise.
From upstairs.
A floorboard.
Someone walking.
Alessandro immediately moved.
His guards raised their weapons.
Sofia grabbed his hand.
"Is someone coming?"
Alessandro didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
Someone was inside.
And they wanted him to know.
He walked upstairs slowly.
Every step brought back memories.
This was where Luca used to hide when they were children.
This was where Elena once laughed.
This was where his father taught him that emotions made people weak.
The hallway remained dark.
At the end was his father's old room.
The door was slightly open.
Alessandro stopped.
The same door.
The same room.
The same place where his father spent his final days.
He pushed it open.
Nothing.
Only an old desk.
An empty chair.
And a single envelope placed in the center.
His name was written on it.
Alessandro Vitali.
He picked it up.
Inside was another message.
Short.
Direct.
"You're finally ready."
Below it was an address.
And one name.
Luca Vitali.
Alessandro stared.
Matteo stepped behind him.
"He wants you to go there."
"How do you know?"
"Because I received the same message."
Alessandro turned.
"When?"
Matteo hesitated.
"Three days ago."
The anger returned.
"You knew Luca was contacting you."
"I didn't know if it was real."
"You knew enough to hide it."
Matteo looked at him.
"I was trying to protect you."
Alessandro almost smiled.
Everyone used that sentence.
Everyone who betrayed him.
Everyone who lied.
Always the same excuse.
Protection.
He looked back at the address.
A part of him wanted to destroy the paper.
Another part needed answers.
After twenty years, he finally had a chance to face the truth.
But he knew something.
Truth always came with a price.
The address led to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.
The same place where Luca's final business operation had taken place before his disappearance.
A place Alessandro had searched countless times.
A place where he found nothing.
Because someone had wanted him to find nothing.
The drive took forty minutes.
Nobody spoke.
Sofia slept in the back seat, holding the rabbit.
Alessandro watched her through the mirror.
His daughter.
The word still felt impossible.
But every time he looked at her, he saw Elena.
The same eyes.
The same quiet strength.
When they arrived, Alessandro stepped out first.
The warehouse was abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal.
No signs of life.
But Alessandro knew better.
Places like this always had someone watching.
He entered slowly.
The inside was dark.
Then a light turned on.
One single bulb.
At the center of the warehouse stood a man.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Alessandro stopped.
The world became silent.
Because for the first time in twenty years...
He was looking at his brother.
Luca Vitali.
Neither man spoke.
They just stared.
Then Luca said:
"You look exactly like father."
Alessandro's face hardened.
"You look exactly like the man I buried."
Luca looked down.
"I deserved that."
Alessandro stepped closer.
"Why?"
Luca didn't answer.
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
"Because if you knew I was alive, you would have come looking."
"And?"
Luca looked at him.
"And they would have killed you too."
The words hung between them.
Alessandro wanted to believe him.
But trust was no longer something he gave freely.
"Who are they?"
Luca looked toward the entrance.
His expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not for himself.
For someone else.
"They know you're here."
Alessandro turned.
His guards immediately reacted.
The warehouse doors began closing.
Slowly.
Automatically.
A trap.
Luca whispered:
"You were never supposed to find me."
Alessandro looked back at him.
"Then why did you leave the message?"
Luca stared.
"I didn't."
Silence.
Alessandro felt his blood run cold.
Because if Luca didn't send the message...
Someone else did.
A phone vibrated.
Not Alessandro's.
Not Matteo's.
Sofia's.
Everyone froze.
The little girl woke up.
She looked at the screen.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Only one sentence.
"Ask Alessandro why he never knew he had another daughter."
May you like
Sofia looked up.
And behind her, the warehouse door opened.
