Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden Inside The Past

Alessandro Vitali had faced armed men without fear.

He had walked into rooms knowing everyone inside wanted him dead.

He had watched enemies betray him, friends disappear, and powerful families collapse overnight.

But nothing prepared him for the way a six-year-old girl looked at him.

Not with fear.

Not with admiration.

With recognition.

Like she had been waiting years to finally see him.

The man walking toward them stopped three rows away.

Alessandro noticed immediately.

The stranger was pretending to be a passenger.

But Alessandro knew better.

The man's eyes were not looking for a seat.

They were searching.

Searching for someone.

And when those eyes landed on the little girl beside him, Alessandro understood.

This was not a coincidence.

He closed his laptop slowly.

The little girl noticed.

Her small hands tightened around the stuffed rabbit.

"Is he the man?" Alessandro whispered.

The girl didn't answer.

She only nodded.

That was enough.

For Alessandro Vitali, information was everything.

And right now, he had only three facts.

A six-year-old girl was running from someone.

That someone was on his plane.

And the girl had something connected to his dead past.

He leaned slightly closer.

"Listen to me."

The girl looked up.

"You are going to do exactly what I say."

She nodded.

"Do you understand?"

Another nod.

Alessandro pressed the flight attendant button.

The woman approached with a polite smile.

"Yes, sir?"

"Could you please ask the captain to delay departure for a moment?"

The flight attendant looked confused.

"Is there a problem?"

Alessandro looked toward the aisle.

The stranger was still standing there.

Watching.

"Yes."

His voice became colder.

"There is."

The flight attendant followed his gaze.

The stranger immediately looked away.

That confirmed everything.

A person with nothing to hide did not react like that.

The flight attendant walked away.

Alessandro turned back to the girl.

"What is your name?"

The girl hesitated.

"My name is Sofia."

"Sofia what?"

The girl lowered her eyes.

"I don't know."

Alessandro froze.

A child who didn't know her own last name.

That was not normal.

"Your mother never told you?"

Sofia shook her head.

"She said my name was dangerous."

For the first time in years, Alessandro felt something he hated.

Confusion.

Because Elena had always been careful.

She was the only person who understood his world.

The only person who knew that names could become weapons.

"What else did your mother tell you?"

Sofia looked around.

Then she whispered.

"She said if I ever found you, I had to give you the rabbit."

Alessandro looked at the stuffed animal.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Did your mother make it?"

Sofia nodded.

"She made it before she left."

The words stayed in the air.

Before she left.

Not before she died.

Alessandro looked at her carefully.

"Your mother is alive?"

Sofia didn't answer.

She looked down.

A child shouldn't have known how to avoid a question like that.

Someone had taught her.

Someone had prepared her.

Alessandro slowly reached for the rabbit.

"May I?"

Sofia gave it to him.

He examined every detail.

The stitching.

The fabric.

The small tear near the ear.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something.

A thread that didn't match.

He pulled gently.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small black memory card.

Alessandro stared at it.

Another clue.

Another message.

Another secret.

He looked at Sofia.

"Did you know this was inside?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then why did you bring it?"

"My mother told me."

"What did she say?"

Sofia looked at him.

"She said only you would know what to do."

Alessandro placed the memory card in his hand.

Twenty years ago, Elena had trusted him with everything.

Except the truth.

He had spent years believing she betrayed him.

Believing she abandoned him.

Believing she chose to disappear.

But now a child was sitting beside him with proof that maybe everything he knew was wrong.

He looked out the airplane window.

The clouds stretched endlessly below them.

For a moment, he remembered Elena's voice.

"You think you know everyone, Alessandro. But sometimes the people closest to you are the ones hiding the biggest secrets."

At the time, he thought she was talking about his enemies.

Now he wondered if she was warning him.

The stranger began walking again.

Closer.

Alessandro noticed.

He placed the memory card inside his suit pocket.

Then he stood.

The stranger stopped.

Passengers nearby looked confused.

Alessandro's expression returned to the cold face the world knew.

The face that built an empire.

The face that made men afraid.

"Sit down," he told Sofia.

She immediately obeyed.

The stranger smiled.

"Mr. Vitali."

Alessandro stared at him.

"You know my name."

The man shrugged.

"Everyone knows your name."

"No."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Only people looking for trouble know my name."

The man's smile disappeared.

"You don't understand what you've found."

Alessandro looked back at Sofia.

Then at him.

"I understand enough."

The stranger lowered his voice.

"That girl is not yours to protect."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Who said she was yours?"

Silence.

The man's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But Alessandro saw it.

Fear.

Not of him.

Of what Alessandro might discover.

The stranger reached inside his coat.

Two security officers appeared immediately.

But Alessandro was faster.

He grabbed the man's wrist before he could pull anything out.

The cabin became silent.

Passengers watched.

Nobody moved.

Alessandro leaned closer.

"What were you going to show me?"

The stranger said nothing.

Alessandro tightened his grip.

"What happened to Elena?"

The man's face changed.

Just hearing that name was enough.

"You shouldn't say that name."

Alessandro released his wrist slowly.

"Why?"

The man looked at Sofia.

Then back at Alessandro.

"Because if Elena trusted you with her daughter, she was more desperate than I thought."

The world stopped.

Alessandro stared at him.

"What did you say?"

The stranger realized his mistake.

Too late.

Alessandro's voice became quiet.

"What did you call her?"

The man stepped backward.

Sofia was watching.

Confused.

Alessandro turned toward the little girl.

"Is that true?"

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

She didn't answer.

She only whispered:

"My mother said you would ask that."

Alessandro felt his chest tighten.

"Ask what?"

Sofia slowly reached into the rabbit again.

This time, she pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Old.

Carefully hidden.

She handed it to him.

His hands were steady.

But his heart wasn't.

Because he already knew the handwriting.

Elena's handwriting.

He unfolded the paper.

Only one sentence was written.

Alessandro,

If Sofia is sitting beside you, it means they found us.

He read the next line.

And then he froze.

Because underneath Elena's message was another name.

May you like

A name he had buried twenty years ago.

The name of the person who was standing behind him.
