Chapter 3 - The Daughter I Was Never Told About

Alessandro Vitali had spent his entire life believing he could control every situation.
He controlled his businesses.
He controlled his enemies.
He controlled the fear people felt when they heard his name.
But standing inside a private airplane cabin, holding a piece of paper written by a woman he thought was dead, Alessandro realized something terrifying.
Someone had been controlling him.
For twenty years.
His eyes stayed fixed on the final line of Elena's message.
A name.
A name he never expected to see again.
The ink looked old.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Elena's.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Sofia watched him carefully.
She was too young to understand the war happening inside his mind.
But she understood one thing.
The man in front of her was the person her mother trusted.
"Who is that name?" Alessandro asked quietly.
Sofia looked down.
"I don't know."
"You've seen it before."
She hesitated.
"My mother said I should never say it unless I was with you."
Alessandro looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because she said if the wrong person heard it, they would know where I was."
Those words confirmed his worst suspicion.
Elena had not disappeared.
She had been hiding.
And she had been hiding something much bigger than himself.
The stranger from the aisle was being held by security near the front of the cabin.
But Alessandro knew this was not over.
People like him did not send one person.
They sent backup.
He folded the paper carefully and placed it inside his jacket.
Then he looked at Sofia.
"Tell me everything your mother told you."
Sofia hugged her rabbit.
"She said you would be angry."
Alessandro's expression changed.
"Why would she think that?"
"Because she said you spent many years believing she left you."
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Twenty years ago, Elena disappeared after one night.
One phone call.
One message.
Gone.
Alessandro searched every city.
Every country.
Every person connected to her.
But nothing.
Only one thing remained.
A photograph of Elena holding a newborn baby.
A photograph he believed was fake.
Because Elena never told him she had a child.
Because he believed she never wanted him to know.
That was the wound he carried for two decades.
The belief that the only woman he loved chose another life without him.
But now...
A six-year-old girl was sitting beside him.
A girl who carried Elena's secrets.
A girl who knew his name before they met.
"Sofia."
The child looked up.
"Did your mother ever show you a picture of me?"
She nodded.
"Many times."
Alessandro froze.
"What?"
"She kept a picture in a box."
"Where?"
"At home."
"Where is home?"
Sofia became quiet.
That silence told him everything.
She was afraid.
Not confused.
Afraid.
Alessandro softened his voice.
"Sofia, look at me."
She slowly looked up.
"You are safe with me."
The girl studied his face.
"That's what my mother said."
Alessandro felt something inside him break.
Because Elena had trusted him.
Even when he thought she didn't.
The plane suddenly shook slightly.
A few passengers reacted nervously.
Alessandro immediately looked toward the cockpit.
Not because of the turbulence.
Because of timing.
Too perfect.
The cabin lights flickered.
Then turned off.
Only emergency lights remained.
Passengers started whispering.
The flight attendants moved quickly.
Alessandro didn't move.
He watched.
Someone wanted chaos.
And chaos was useful for people who wanted to disappear.
He reached inside his jacket and touched the memory card.
The only evidence Elena left behind.
A few seconds later, the lights returned.
But the stranger was gone.
The security officers looked confused.
Alessandro stood immediately.
"Where is he?"
One officer looked nervous.
"He was here seconds ago."
"That's impossible."
The officer swallowed.
"The rear door was opened."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
A passenger plane in the air.
A secured cabin.
A missing man.
Someone powerful was involved.
He turned back to Sofia.
She was still sitting there.
But her rabbit was missing.
Alessandro looked around.
"Where is your toy?"
Sofia's face changed.
"He took it."
The cabin became silent.
The stranger didn't run because he wanted freedom.
He ran because he wanted the rabbit.
The rabbit contained something.
Alessandro moved quickly toward the back of the plane.
The flight attendants tried to stop him.
"Sir, you cannot go back there."
Alessandro looked at them.
Nobody argued.
Not after seeing his expression.
Near the rear section, he found something on the floor.
A small piece of white fabric.
From the rabbit.
And underneath it...
A tiny electronic device.
Not a toy.
A tracker.
Someone had been tracking Sofia the entire time.
Alessandro picked it up.
His jaw tightened.
Elena wasn't only running.
She was protecting Sofia from someone who knew exactly where she was.
He returned to his seat.
Sofia was waiting.
"Did you find it?"
"No."
Her eyes filled with worry.
"My mother said they would try to take it."
"Who?"
Sofia whispered:
"The people who hurt her."
Alessandro became completely still.
"What people?"
Sofia looked at him.
"The people who told everyone she was dead."
For the first time in twenty years, Alessandro felt something stronger than anger.
Regret.
Because while he was searching for Elena's killer...
Elena was alive.
And she had been protecting their daughter.
Their daughter.
The thought felt impossible.
But everything impossible had become real in one day.
Alessandro looked at the memory card.
He needed answers.
Now.
He took out a small device from his briefcase.
A private reader.
Sofia watched silently.
The memory card contained only one file.
A video.
Created six years ago.
The date made him stop.
The same month Sofia was born.
He pressed play.
The screen showed darkness.
Then Elena appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Alessandro forgot how to breathe.
Her eyes looked directly into the camera.
Like she knew he would watch it someday.
"Alessandro..."
Her voice was quiet.
"If you are seeing this, then Sofia found you."
He closed his eyes for a second.
Hearing her voice again after twenty years was almost unbearable.
Elena continued.
"I need you to listen carefully."
She looked frightened.
Not for herself.
For someone else.
"For years, you believed I betrayed you."
Alessandro stared at the screen.
"But the truth is, I was trying to protect you."
The video paused for a moment.
Then Elena said something that made Alessandro's blood run cold.
"The person who destroyed our family was not your enemy."
A shadow moved behind her.
Someone was in the room.
Elena looked over her shoulder.
Fear appeared in her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"They were someone you trusted."
The video suddenly cut off.
Alessandro stared at the blank screen.
Someone he trusted.
A person close enough to destroy everything.
A person close enough to make Elena disappear.
Sofia touched his arm.
"Alessandro..."
He looked at her.
"What?"
The girl pointed behind him.
Her face had turned pale.
"There."
Alessandro slowly turned.
A person was standing at the entrance of the airplane cabin.
Someone he knew.
May you like
Someone who should not have been there.
Because the person looked at him and said his name.
