Chapter 7 - The Secret Emma Was Carrying

The Moretti estate had survived wars.
It had survived betrayals.
It had survived men who came through its doors believing they were powerful enough to challenge Alessandro Moretti.
But never had the mansion felt as tense as it did now.
Because for the first time, the danger was not outside.
It was everywhere.
Every hallway.
Every window.
Every shadow.
Alessandro stood in the security room watching the cameras.
The image on the screen showed the entire property.
The front gate.
The gardens.
The driveway.
The entrances.
Nothing moved.
And yet, he felt watched.
That was the problem with experienced enemies.
They did not need to be seen to make their presence known.
“They entered the system without triggering an alarm,” Lorenzo said behind him.
Alessandro did not turn.
“Meaning?”
“Someone knew how the security worked.”
Silence.
The meaning was obvious.
Someone inside.
Someone who had access.
Someone who understood the estate.
Alessandro looked at the screen showing the hallway outside Emma’s room.
The little girl was sleeping.
A guard stood nearby.
Not because Emma knew.
Because Alessandro knew.
The world had changed overnight.
Before Emma arrived, he protected his home because it belonged to him.
Now he protected it because she was inside.
“Replace the entire security system.”
Lorenzo looked surprised.
“Immediately?”
“Yes.”
“That will take days.”
“Then it should have started yesterday.”
Lorenzo nodded.
He had no argument.
Because this was no longer about business.
This was personal.
A few hours later, Detective Cole arrived with new information.
Alessandro met him in the study.
“Tell me.”
Cole placed a folder on the desk.
“We traced Marcus Vale.”
“And?”
“He is dead.”
Alessandro’s expression did not change.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
A pause.
“Three days after the bombing.”
The room became silent.
Alessandro looked at the documents.
A dead man.
A false trail.
Someone had been cleaning up.
“His death was made to look accidental,” Cole continued.
“Was it?”
“No.”
Alessandro closed the folder.
“Who killed him?”
“That is the problem.”
Cole placed another document down.
“Every record connected to him disappeared.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“Not disappeared.”
Cole understood.
“Erased.”
“Yes.”
A person could destroy evidence.
But only someone with influence could erase a person’s entire existence.
Alessandro walked toward the window.
The rain had stopped.
For once, the sky was clear.
But he knew better than anyone.
Clear skies did not mean the storm was over.
“Find Daniel Romano.”
Cole looked confused.
“We already tried.”
“Try again.”
“Alessandro…”
“He is not dead.”
Cole stared.
“You believe that?”
“I believe whoever wanted him gone wanted people to think he was gone.”
“And if he is alive?”
Alessandro looked at him.
“Then he knows what Emma knows.”
Later that afternoon, Alessandro found Sophia in the garden.
She was sitting on a bench while Emma played nearby.
For the first time since arriving at the estate, Sophia looked peaceful.
But Alessandro knew it was temporary.
Peace was often just the moment before the next disaster.
“You knew Daniel was involved with Bellgrave.”
Sophia looked up.
She did not pretend.
“Yes.”
“Why did you hide it?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
Sophia shook her head.
“No.”
That answer surprised him.
“Then who?”
She watched Emma.
“The people who were looking for him.”
Alessandro sat beside her.
“What did Daniel find?”
Sophia was quiet.
Then:
“He was supposed to deliver information.”
“To whom?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Yes.”
There was no fear in her voice.
Only exhaustion.
“Daniel did not trust anyone anymore.”
“Not even you?”
Her eyes filled slightly.
“He trusted me enough to leave Emma with me.”
That answer stopped him.
Sophia continued.
“The night before he disappeared, he came home terrified.”
Alessandro listened carefully.
“He told me we had to leave.”
“Why?”
“He said someone inside Bellgrave was selling information.”
“What kind of information?”
“Security plans.”
Alessandro’s face hardened.
“Security plans for who?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Important people.”
The answer was enough.
Isabella.
Chiara.
His family.
Sophia lowered her voice.
“Daniel said one name.”
Alessandro turned.
“What name?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Moretti.”
The world seemed to stop.
For three years, Alessandro had searched for a connection.
Now it was sitting in front of him.
“Why did he know my name?”
Sophia shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
“I told you. Daniel was scared.”
“What else did he say?”
Sophia looked toward Emma.
“He said if anything happened to him, I should never let anyone know what Emma has.”
Alessandro became still.
“What does Emma have?”
Sophia looked away.
“I don’t know.”
“You are her mother.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
“But Daniel hid it.”
“Why?”
“Because he thought someone would hurt her.”
Alessandro looked at Emma.
The little girl was sitting in the grass, carefully arranging flowers around her doll.
A child who had no idea she was at the center of something dangerous.
That evening, Alessandro approached her.
“Emma.”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
She nodded.
“Your father gave you something?”
Emma hugged her doll.
A small movement.
But Alessandro noticed.
“Yes.”
“What did he give you?”
She looked around.
As if checking who was listening.
Then she whispered:
“A box.”
Alessandro’s heart changed rhythm.
“A box?”
Emma nodded.
“Daddy said I should keep it safe.”
“Where is it?”
Emma looked uncertain.
“Mommy said never talk about it.”
Alessandro lowered himself to her level.
“Emma.”
She looked at him.
“I promise I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
The little girl studied his face.
Children could sense things adults ignored.
After a moment, she whispered:
“Daddy said the bad people wanted the box.”
“What was inside?”
Emma looked at her doll.
“He said it would tell the truth.”
Alessandro felt the answer before he heard it.
“The truth about what?”
Emma became quiet.
Then she said:
“About the people who made Mommy cry.”
The words hit him.
Not because they revealed everything.
Because they revealed enough.
The box existed.
The secret existed.
And someone had been willing to destroy families to find it.
“Where is the box now?”
Emma looked toward Sophia.
Then whispered:
“Inside my doll.”
Alessandro froze.
The doll.
The patched doll she carried everywhere.
The doll she protected.
The doll he had repaired.
Slowly, his eyes moved toward the toy.
A small object.
A child’s possession.
A hiding place nobody would suspect.
He understood.
Daniel had not trusted banks.
He had not trusted computers.
He had trusted his daughter.
Because nobody searched children for secrets.
That night, Alessandro sat in his office with the doll on the desk.
He did not open it.
Not yet.
Because it was not just evidence.
It was something Daniel had trusted Emma to protect.
And Alessandro knew something about promises.
Especially promises made to children.
He called Lorenzo.
“Prepare a secure room.”
“For what?”
Alessandro looked at the doll.
“For the truth.”
Before Lorenzo could answer, every light in the mansion went out.
The entire estate fell into darkness.
Security alarms began flashing.
Then stopped.
Too quickly.
Alessandro immediately stood.
A second later, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You always were predictable, Alessandro.”
His eyes hardened.
“Who are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“The man who has been cleaning up your mistakes for years.”
Alessandro’s grip tightened.
“Where is Emma?”
A pause.
Then:
“Exactly where you thought she would be.”
His blood went cold.
He turned toward the hallway.
The hallway where Emma’s room was.
He ran.
For the first time in years, Alessandro Moretti ran.
Not because of anger.
Not because of revenge.
Because somewhere in the darkness of his own home…
Someone had reached the one person he could not afford to lose.
And when he opened the door to Emma’s room…
The bed was empty.
The window was open.
And on the pillow was the patched doll.
