Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Not Supposed To Care

Alessandro Moretti had spent three years believing he knew exactly who he was.

A man without attachments.

A man without weaknesses.

A man who had survived because he had removed every piece of himself that could be used against him.

That was the rule he lived by.

Care about nothing.

Trust no one.

Need no one.

Because everything a person loved could become a weapon.

He had learned that lesson on the day Isabella and Chiara died.

But now, sitting alone in his office with an unknown message glowing on his phone screen, Alessandro realized something that disturbed him more than any threat.

He had broken his own rule.

He cared.

Not about business.

Not about reputation.

Not about revenge.

About a little girl with a patched doll and frightened eyes.

Emma Romano.

A child who had walked into his home without knowing she had stepped into the world of a dangerous man.

And somehow, she had made him remember the part of himself he thought was gone forever.

The part that could protect instead of destroy.

The next morning, Alessandro was already awake before sunrise.

He stood in the training room beneath the estate, dressed in a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his fists wrapped.

For years, this room had been where he buried his anger.

Every punch was for someone.

The men who betrayed him.

The enemies who laughed after taking his family.

The people who escaped justice.

But today, his movements were different.

Controlled.

Focused.

Not fueled by rage.

Lorenzo watched from the doorway.

The old butler had known Alessandro since he was a child.

He had seen him grow from a stubborn young man into the most feared figure in the city.

But this was different.

“You did not sleep.”

Alessandro did not stop.

“No.”

“Because of the message?”

A punch landed against the heavy bag.

“Yes.”

Lorenzo stepped inside.

“Do you think it is connected to Isabella?”

Alessandro stopped.

The room became silent.

For three years, that name had barely been spoken.

Not because he had forgotten her.

Because saying it made everything real again.

“I think,” Alessandro said slowly, “someone wants me to think it is connected.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“A trap.”

“Most likely.”

“And yet you are still investigating.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Yes.”

The butler studied him.

“Because of Sophia?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Lorenzo almost smiled.

“Of course.”

Alessandro ignored the comment.

“Because whoever is watching them already knows about me.”

He walked toward the table where several photographs had been placed.

Pictures of Sophia.

Emma.

The apartment building.

The black vehicle.

Someone had been patient.

Someone had followed them for a long time.

“People do not threaten me unless they want something.”

Lorenzo looked at the photos.

“What do you think they want?”

Alessandro stared at Emma’s picture.

The little girl was holding her doll.

Looking directly into the camera.

“Her.”

The word was quiet.

But certain.

Lorenzo frowned.

“You believe Emma is the reason?”

“I believe Emma knows something.”

“A three-year-old?”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Children remember things adults think they forget.”

Lorenzo had no answer.

Because he knew Alessandro was right.

Later that morning, Sophia was called to the main house.

She arrived nervous.

Alessandro noticed immediately.

Not because she was afraid of him.

Because she was afraid of what he might ask.

Emma walked beside her, holding her doll.

When they entered the office, the little girl stopped.

Her eyes moved around the room.

The shelves.

The fireplace.

The photograph on the desk.

She stared at Isabella and Chiara’s picture.

Alessandro noticed.

“What is it?”

Emma looked at him.

“That girl looks happy.”

His expression softened slightly.

“She was.”

“Was she your daughter?”

“Yes.”

Emma approached the desk slowly.

“Her name?”

“Chiara.”

Emma smiled faintly.

“Pretty.”

Alessandro looked away.

For a moment, he imagined Chiara standing there.

Same curiosity.

Same innocence.

Then reality returned.

Sophia cleared her throat.

“You wanted to speak with me?”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Yes.”

He gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.”

Sophia hesitated.

Then sat.

Emma remained beside her.

“I know someone has been watching you.”

Sophia became still.

“I saw the car.”

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

“How long?”

Sophia looked down.

“A few weeks.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“And you said nothing?”

“What was I supposed to say?”

The question was not angry.

It was exhausted.

“I came here because I thought this was the one place they would not look.”

“You thought?”

Sophia swallowed.

“I hoped.”

That word affected him.

Because hope was something Alessandro had stopped allowing himself.

“What happened to Daniel Romano?”

Sophia’s eyes moved toward Emma.

The little girl was quietly playing with her doll near the window.

“He was my husband.”

“I know.”

“He found something.”

“What?”

Sophia shook her head.

“I do not know everything.”

“That is not possible.”

“It is.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Daniel never told me because he thought knowing would put me in danger.”

Alessandro leaned forward.

“What did he find?”

Sophia was silent.

Then she whispered:

“Something connected to people who have power.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“When Daniel disappeared, he left me one message.”

“What message?”

She looked at him.

“Protect Emma.”

The room went quiet.

Alessandro felt something cold move through him.

“Nothing else?”

Sophia shook her head.

“No.”

“Not a location? A name?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel knew me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He knew I would try to find him.”

“And?”

“And he knew whoever was after him would come after Emma.”

Alessandro looked toward the child.

Emma was sitting on the floor, carefully fixing her doll’s damaged dress.

So small.

So unaware.

“You should have come to me sooner.”

Sophia gave a bitter smile.

“I did not know you were the kind of man who protected people.”

The honesty was unexpected.

Most people lied to Alessandro.

Sophia did not.

“And what kind of man did you think I was?”

She looked at him carefully.

“The kind people are afraid of.”

A normal person might have been offended.

Alessandro was not.

Because she was right.

Before he could answer, a sound interrupted them.

A small crash.

Emma dropped the doll.

She had moved toward the window.

Her face had changed.

“Emma?”

Sophia immediately stood.

The little girl pointed outside.

“The man.”

Alessandro turned.

“What man?”

Emma stepped backward.

“The man from before.”

Every instinct inside Alessandro awakened.

He moved to the window.

Outside the estate gates, a figure stood near the road.

Watching.

A man in a dark coat.

The moment Alessandro looked at him, the man turned away.

Too late.

Alessandro had already seen enough.

“Stay here.”

He walked out.

The security team reacted immediately.

Two guards moved with him.

The man was already gone by the time they reached the gate.

But something had been left behind.

A small envelope.

Alessandro picked it up.

No fingerprints.

No name.

Only one sentence written on the front.

YOU CANNOT PROTECT WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Sophia.

Not of Emma.

Of Isabella.

Alessandro froze.

The picture was old.

Private.

One he had never released.

One that only someone close to the family could have.

His hands tightened around the photograph.

Three years of silence.

Three years of searching.

Three years of believing he had lost everything.

And suddenly, someone had reached back into his past.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.

When he returned inside, Sophia immediately saw his expression.

“What happened?”

Alessandro did not answer.

Because for the first time in years, he felt something he thought he would never feel again.

Not anger.

Not grief.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For Emma.

He looked at the little girl sitting quietly on the floor.

Then at the photograph of Isabella in his hand.

The past was not buried.

It had been waiting.

And whoever had destroyed his family years ago…

Had now made the biggest mistake of their life.

They had brought the fight directly to Alessandro Moretti.

And this time, he was not fighting because he had lost something.

He was fighting because he had found something worth protecting.
