Chapter 6 - The Enemy Who Was Hiding in Plain Sight

For three years, Alessandro Moretti had chased a ghost.
A name without a face.
A crime without an answer.
A memory that refused to die.
Every lead after Isabella and Chiara’s death had disappeared into nothing. Every person connected to the investigation had claimed ignorance. Every piece of evidence had ended at a dead end.
But now the ghost had a face.
And Alessandro knew exactly where to look.
The old Bellgrave Security building stood abandoned on the edge of the city.
Years ago, it had been a respected company.
Trusted by politicians.
Business leaders.
Families with enough money to believe security could protect them from anything.
Including Alessandro Moretti.
That was the irony.
The people who were supposed to protect his family had been standing close enough to betray them.
Alessandro stepped out of his car and looked at the building.
The windows were covered with dust.
The entrance sign was damaged.
The entire place looked forgotten.
But Alessandro knew better.
Forgotten places often contained the secrets people wanted buried.
Detective Cole stood beside him.
“You are sure this is where Daniel Romano disappeared?”
Alessandro adjusted his coat.
“Yes.”
Cole looked at the building.
“I still don’t understand how this connects to Isabella.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“That is because three years ago everyone was looking at the explosion.”
Cole became silent.
“And you think we should have been looking somewhere else?”
“I think someone wanted us looking at the explosion.”
They entered through the side entrance.
The lock had already been broken.
That bothered Alessandro.
Someone else had been there recently.
Inside, the building was empty.
Old desks.
Broken computers.
Dust covering everything.
But the silence felt wrong.
Too intentional.
Cole noticed it too.
“This place should have been searched.”
“It was.”
“Then why does it feel like someone is hiding something?”
Alessandro looked down.
A small mark on the floor.
Fresh.
Not from years ago.
Someone had moved something heavy recently.
He followed the mark toward the back room.
Inside was an old archive area.
Most of the shelves were empty.
But one section remained untouched.
A single locked cabinet.
Cole approached.
“You think that is it?”
Alessandro did not answer.
He already knew.
Some instincts never disappeared.
He opened the cabinet.
Inside were dozens of files.
Most were labeled with company information.
But one folder had no name.
Only a date.
The day before Isabella and Chiara died.
Alessandro picked it up.
For the first time in years, his hands almost shook.
Not from fear.
From anger.
He opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Security reports.
Vehicle records.
Names.
Then he saw it.
A picture of Isabella’s car.
Taken two days before the explosion.
Cole stepped closer.
“Where did that come from?”
Alessandro kept looking.
Because the truth was worse than he expected.
Someone had been watching them.
Not randomly.
Not for days.
For months.
The report included details about Isabella’s routine.
Where she shopped.
Where Chiara went to school.
Which roads they used.
Everything.
Cole’s face changed.
“This was surveillance.”
“Yes.”
“By Bellgrave?”
Alessandro turned the page.
A signature.
A name.
His expression became cold.
“Not Bellgrave.”
Cole looked.
“Then who?”
Alessandro placed the document on the table.
At the bottom was the name of a private contractor.
A man who had worked with Bellgrave.
A man who had disappeared shortly after the bombing.
“Marcus Vale.”
Cole frowned.
“I remember him.”
“You should.”
“He was questioned.”
“And?”
“He had an alibi.”
Alessandro stared at him.
“Fake.”
Cole looked uncomfortable.
“Alessandro…”
“He was there.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he knew things only someone watching my family would know.”
The room became silent.
Then Alessandro found something else.
A small digital storage device hidden beneath the folder.
Cole looked at it.
“What is that?”
“Something someone forgot to destroy.”
They took it back to a secure location.
Hours later, the files were opened.
Most were encrypted.
But one video remained accessible.
The screen flickered.
Then a security recording appeared.
A parking garage.
Three years earlier.
A man entered the frame.
Marcus Vale.
Talking to someone.
The second person was hidden.
But Alessandro recognized the voice.
His entire body went still.
Because he had heard it before.
During the investigation.
A man who claimed to be helping.
A man who offered information.
A man Alessandro had trusted.
Cole whispered:
“No.”
Alessandro did not respond.
The video continued.
Marcus handed over a folder.
The hidden man said:
“Once the family is gone, the problem disappears.”
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
Family.
Not target.
Not person.
Family.
They had planned it.
They had studied them.
They had calculated every moment.
The explosion was not revenge.
It was removal.
Cole looked at Alessandro.
“Who is he?”
Alessandro stared at the screen.
The answer hurt because it was someone close.
“Someone who sat across from me after the funeral.”
Cole became pale.
“Someone from your organization?”
“Yes.”
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Alessandro stood.
“We leave.”
Cole looked confused.
“Where?”
“Home.”
“Why?”
Alessandro looked at him.
“Because if they know we found this, Emma is in danger.”
The drive back to the estate felt longer than usual.
Every street.
Every vehicle.
Every shadow.
Alessandro noticed everything.
Because the moment he found the truth, he understood the enemy’s strategy.
They had not been hiding from him.
They had been waiting.
Waiting for him to find the right door.
Then they would close it.
When he arrived at the estate, something immediately felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Alessandro stepped out of the car.
Security guards were standing near the entrance.
One of them approached quickly.
“Sir.”
“What happened?”
The guard hesitated.
That was enough.
Alessandro’s expression changed.
“Speak.”
“Miss Sophia and Emma…”
His voice stopped.
Alessandro stepped forward.
“What happened?”
“They are inside.”
A pause.
“They received a message.”
Alessandro entered immediately.
Sophia was in the living room.
Emma was sitting beside her.
Both were safe.
But Sophia’s face told him something had happened.
“What message?”
Sophia looked at him.
Then handed him a phone.
The message was from an unknown number.
A picture.
Emma sleeping.
Taken inside the Moretti estate.
Alessandro froze.
Because nobody outside should have been able to take that photograph.
Below it was one sentence.
WE CAN REACH HER ANYWHERE.
The room became colder.
Sophia looked at him.
“Who are they?”
For years, Alessandro had avoided answering that question.
Because he had no answer.
But now he did.
“They are the people who killed my family.”
Sophia’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Alessandro looked at Emma.
The little girl was holding her doll.
Unaware of the war surrounding her.
Then he looked back at Sophia.
“And they are the people who have been trying to find what Daniel discovered.”
Sophia whispered:
“What did he discover?”
Alessandro walked toward the window.
Outside, the rain had started again.
The same rain from the night he followed Emma.
The same rain that had led him to the truth.
“Something powerful enough to make them kill.”
Sophia looked frightened.
“Then why are they afraid of a little girl?”
Alessandro turned.
And for the first time, he said the words he had been thinking since the beginning.
“Because Emma knows something.”
Sophia shook her head.
“She is three years old.”
“I know.”
“She doesn’t understand any of this.”
“No.”
Alessandro looked at the child.
“But someone left her with a secret.”
Silence.
Then Emma slowly looked up.
“Mr. Moretti?”
He softened immediately.
“Yes?”
She held out her doll.
The repaired one.
“Thank you for fixing her.”
Alessandro walked over.
He looked at the toy.
Then at Emma.
A child who had lost her father.
A child who had already experienced fear.
A child who still believed broken things could be repaired.
He finally understood something.
The enemy thought Emma was a weakness.
They thought protecting her would make him vulnerable.
They did not understand.
Emma was not his weakness.
She was the reason he had become dangerous again.
Because a man who has nothing to lose is frightening.
But a man who finally has something worth protecting…
Is unstoppable.
And somewhere in the city, the people who destroyed his family were beginning to realize their mistake.
May you like
They had spent three years hiding from Alessandro Moretti.
Now they had given him a reason to come after them.
