Chapter 8 - The Truth Behind the Name

For most of her life, Khloe Bennett believed powerful people were impossible to understand.
They lived behind walls she could never enter.
They spoke languages built from money, influence, and connections.
They solved problems with phone calls instead of long hours.
They opened doors simply because their names carried weight.
Khloe had always stood outside those doors.
Watching.
Waiting.
Trying not to be noticed.
But now she was standing beside one of the most powerful men in Boston, and the strange thing was not that Dominic Costello had protected her.
The strange thing was that he never made her feel small.
That was what confused her the most.
Because Khloe knew what power usually looked like.
It looked like Vivienne Kensington walking into LaRosa and believing everyone existed beneath her.
It looked like customers snapping their fingers because they thought money made them important.
It looked like people using fear as a replacement for respect.
But Dominic was different.
His power was obvious.
Everyone could feel it when he entered a room.
Yet somehow, when he was with her, he never used it against her.
And that made him more difficult to understand.
A week after the photograph appeared outside her apartment, Khloe found herself sitting inside Dominic’s private office for the first time.
She had expected something intimidating.
A dark room.
Expensive furniture.
People constantly walking in and out.
Something that matched the stories she had heard.
Instead, the office was surprisingly simple.
Large windows overlooked Boston’s skyline.
A wooden desk sat near the center.
Books filled one wall.
There were no unnecessary decorations.
No symbols of power.
No reminders that Dominic Costello was feared.
Just a quiet room belonging to a man who had built an entire empire but seemed strangely detached from it.
Khloe looked around.
“This is not what I expected.”
Dominic looked up from the documents in front of him.
“What did you expect?”
She hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
A small smile appeared.
“That usually means something dramatic.”
Khloe almost smiled back.
“Maybe.”
She sat across from him.
The situation still felt unreal.
A month ago, she was serving drinks to people like him.
Now she was sitting across from him discussing threats against her.
Life had a strange sense of humor.
Dominic pushed a folder toward her.
“This is everything we know.”
Khloe opened it.
Inside were photographs, business records, and names.
The same name appeared several times.
Ethan Kensington.
Vivienne’s brother.
Khloe looked up.
“He really hates losing.”
Dominic leaned back.
“He hates being powerless.”
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“People who hate losing want to win.”
He paused.
“People who hate being powerless want everyone else to feel powerless too.”
Khloe looked at the folder again.
“That sounds like Vivienne.”
“Yes.”
The agreement was simple.
But it carried weight.
For the first time, Dominic was not defending someone from a distance.
He was allowing Khloe to see the truth.
“Why did you get engaged to her?”
The question escaped before she could stop it.
Dominic became quiet.
Khloe immediately regretted asking.
“You don’t have to answer.”
“I know.”
He looked out the window.
“But you deserve to understand.”
That sentence surprised her.
Most people with power protected their secrets.
Dominic seemed willing to explain them.
“The engagement was arranged.”
Khloe nodded slowly.
“Because of business?”
“Because of influence.”
He folded his hands.
“My family built relationships through alliances. Her family had political connections.”
“So it was never love.”
“No.”
The honesty was painful.
Even though Khloe knew it.
“Then why stay?”
Dominic looked down.
“Because sometimes people confuse responsibility with obligation.”
Khloe understood that more than she expected.
She had spent years doing the same thing.
Staying in jobs that hurt her.
Accepting treatment she hated.
Convincing herself that suffering was simply part of being responsible.
“You thought you had to.”
Dominic looked at her.
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
And for a moment, Khloe saw something beneath the dangerous reputation.
A man who had also spent years trapped by expectations.
The realization surprised her.
She had always imagined Dominic as someone who controlled everything.
She had never considered that maybe he had spent his life controlled by others.
Before either of them could say more, Dominic’s phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“What happened?”
His expression changed.
Khloe noticed.
Something was wrong.
He listened for several seconds.
Then:
“Send me everything.”
He ended the call.
“What?”
Dominic looked at her.
“The person who took the photograph has been identified.”
Khloe’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
He did not answer immediately.
That scared her.
“Dominic.”
“Ethan Kensington.”
The room became silent.
Khloe looked away.
Of course.
Part of her had expected it.
But hearing the name made everything real.
“What does he want?”
Dominic’s expression was cold.
“Control.”
“Over what?”
“Over Vivienne’s reputation.”
Khloe frowned.
“I don’t understand.”
Dominic stood and walked toward the window.
“Vivienne’s family built their influence on appearing perfect.”
He turned back.
“You embarrassed her publicly.”
“I defended myself.”
“I know.”
His voice softened.
“But to them, those two things are the same.”
Khloe looked down.
“So they want me gone.”
“Yes.”
The answer was simple.
But Dominic’s next words changed everything.
“They also want to prove something.”
“What?”
“That Dominic Costello can be controlled.”
Khloe stared.
“They’re using me to attack you.”
“Yes.”
She immediately stood.
“Then I should leave.”
Dominic looked at her.
“What?”
“This is because of me.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Her voice became emotional.
“If I disappear, they lose their reason.”
Dominic walked closer.
“Khloe.”
She stopped.
“This is exactly what they want.”
She looked at him.
“They want you to believe your existence is the problem.”
The words hit her.
Because they sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
That was the lie she had lived with her entire life.
You are the problem.
Your body.
Your voice.
Your needs.
Your presence.
Dominic continued.
“They chose you because they thought you would run.”
Khloe was silent.
“And if you leave now?”
His eyes held hers.
“They win.”
For years, Khloe had run.
From judgment.
From cruelty.
From rejection.
Maybe running had kept her alive.
But it had never given her a life.
She slowly sat back down.
“What happens next?”
Dominic watched her.
The question mattered.
Because it was not the question of someone waiting to be rescued.
It was the question of someone choosing to fight.
“Next, we expose the truth.”
Khloe nodded.
“Then let’s do it.”
Dominic studied her.
“You are sure?”
No hesitation.
“No.”
That surprised him.
She continued:
“I’m terrified.”
A small pause.
“But I’m tired of being terrified.”
For the first time, Dominic smiled.
Not the polite expression he used with business partners.
A real smile.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But real.
“Good.”
Khloe raised an eyebrow.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because people who are not afraid usually do not understand danger.”
He paused.
“But people who are afraid and still move forward…”
His eyes softened.
“They are the ones who change things.”
That evening, Khloe left Dominic’s office with a different feeling.
The threat was still there.
The danger was real.
Nothing had magically disappeared.
But something inside her had changed.
She was no longer the woman who waited for someone else to decide her worth.
She was no longer the woman who apologized for taking up space.
She was Khloe Bennett.
The woman who stood in front of an entire restaurant and finally said no.
Outside the building, Dominic watched from the window as she walked away.
His security team stood nearby.
One of them spoke.
“She’s different.”
Dominic did not look away.
“Yes.”
“She doesn’t seem like someone who belongs in this world.”
Dominic remained quiet for a moment.
Then he answered:
“Maybe this world is the one that doesn’t deserve someone like her.”
Across the city, inside a luxury apartment overlooking Boston Harbor, Ethan Kensington looked at a photograph of Khloe.
His expression was calm.
Almost amused.
He picked up his phone.
“Begin.”
A voice answered.
“And if she refuses?”
Ethan looked at the picture.
“She already did.”
A pause.
“That is why she has to learn.”
He smiled slightly.
“Everyone breaks eventually.”
But Ethan Kensington had made the same mistake everyone else had made.
He underestimated Khloe Bennett.
He thought she was dangerous because Dominic protected her.
He did not understand the truth.
May you like
Dominic had not created her strength.
He had only been the first person brave enough to see it.
