Chapter 4 - The Man Behind the Fear

Khloe Bennett expected the night to end when she walked away from LaRosa.
She expected to go home.
Take off her ruined uniform.
Wash the smell of spilled food from her clothes.
Put ice on her cheek.
And wake up the next morning pretending nothing had happened.
That was what she had always done.
Survive.
Recover.
Continue.
But as she walked through the streets of Boston beneath the cold rain, Khloe realized something had changed.
Not the city.
Not the people around her.
Her.
For the first time in years, she had said what she thought.
For the first time in years, she had looked someone powerful in the eyes and refused to disappear.
The strange part was that she did not feel victorious.
She felt exhausted.
Her adrenaline was fading, leaving behind the reality of what had happened.
She had stood against Vivienne Kensington.
She had embarrassed one of the most influential women in Boston.
And Dominic Costello had publicly taken her side.
That last part frightened her more than anything.
Because Dominic Costello was not a normal man.
Khloe had heard stories.
Everyone had.
People did not become feared without a reason.
She had spent her entire life trying to avoid dangerous people.
Yet somehow, on the worst night of her life, the most dangerous man in Boston had been the only person who treated her like she mattered.
That contradiction followed her all the way home.
When she finally reached her apartment building, the rain had soaked through her uniform.
The hallway smelled like old paint and dust.
She climbed the stairs slowly, holding Dominic’s handkerchief in her hand.
She still had not returned it.
She did not know why.
Maybe because it was proof that the night had actually happened.
Maybe because a small part of her was afraid that if she let go of it, everything would go back to normal.
And normal had never been kind to her.
Inside her apartment, Khloe locked the door behind her.
Then she leaned against it.
The silence hit immediately.
No wealthy guests.
No judgmental whispers.
No fake smiles.
Just her.
She walked to the bathroom mirror.
For a long moment, she stared at herself.
The woman looking back did not look powerful.
She looked tired.
Her cheek was red.
Her hair was messy.
Her uniform was stained.
She looked exactly like the person everyone at LaRosa had decided she was.
Someone less important.
Someone easy to ignore.
Khloe touched the bruise carefully.
Then she remembered Dominic’s words.
You should not apologize for surviving.
She hated how much those words stayed with her.
Because they made her question everything.
Had she really been surviving?
Or had she simply been allowing people to hurt her because she believed she deserved nothing better?
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
Khloe froze.
Her entire body became tense.
Nobody visited her apartment.
Not at night.
Not unexpectedly.
She quietly walked toward the door.
Another knock.
Three controlled knocks.
Not aggressive.
Not rushed.
But somehow that made it worse.
Because she recognized them.
Her heart stopped.
“Khloe.”
Dominic.
She stepped back immediately.
What was he doing here?
How did he know where she lived?
A hundred dangerous possibilities entered her mind.
She grabbed the nearest object she could find.
A heavy frying pan.
“Go away.”
There was a brief silence.
Then his voice came through the door.
“I came alone.”
“That is not comforting.”
A pause.
Then:
“No.”
His answer surprised her.
“But it is honest.”
Khloe held the frying pan tighter.
“You cannot just show up at my apartment.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Another pause.
“Because you left before anyone could make sure you were okay.”
Khloe almost laughed.
Almost.
Because it was such a strange thing to hear from him.
“I told you I’m fine.”
“Again.”
She frowned.
“What?”
“You said it again.”
She became quiet.
Dominic continued.
“You say you’re fine every time someone asks if you’re hurt.”
Khloe looked away from the door.
“That is none of your business.”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“It isn’t.”
That answer surprised her.
Most people who had power did not admit when something was not their business.
They took.
They demanded.
They controlled.
Dominic continued.
“But tonight, someone hurt you because they thought nobody would stop them.”
Khloe stayed silent.
“I wanted to make sure you knew someone did.”
Her grip on the frying pan loosened slightly.
She hated that his words affected her.
She hated that part of her believed him.
Slowly, she moved the small dresser away from the door.
Then she opened it.
Only slightly.
Dominic stood in the hallway.
No bodyguards.
No intimidating group of men.
Just him.
For some reason, that made him look more dangerous.
Because now he looked human.
He held a thick envelope.
Khloe immediately became suspicious.
“What is that?”
“Something you need.”
“I don’t need anything from you.”
Dominic looked past her.
At the apartment.
The cracked wall.
The old furniture.
The small kitchen.
The broken ceiling corner where water stains had appeared.
His expression changed.
Not pity.
Something else.
Concern.
Khloe noticed.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t look at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like I’m something you need to fix.”
Dominic studied her.
“I don’t think you need fixing.”
The answer came instantly.
“You think I need help.”
“I think everyone needs help sometimes.”
Khloe crossed her arms.
“That sounds easy coming from you.”
“Why?”
“Because you have everything.”
Dominic looked at her.
“That is what people think.”
The sentence surprised her.
Because for the first time, she heard something behind his voice.
Something lonely.
She stepped aside slightly.
Not an invitation.
Not exactly.
But enough.
Dominic entered.
He placed the envelope on the table.
Khloe did not touch it.
“What is it?”
“Money.”
Her expression hardened.
“No.”
“You don’t know the amount.”
“I don’t care.”
“Fifty thousand dollars.”
The number made her eyes widen.
Then immediately narrow.
“No.”
Dominic looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to owe you.”
“You wouldn’t.”
“I don’t believe that.”
“Why?”
Khloe laughed quietly.
“Because nobody gives someone like me fifty thousand dollars without expecting something.”
The room became quiet.
Dominic looked at her carefully.
Then he nodded.
“That is a fair assumption.”
She did not expect him to agree.
“But this is not a debt.”
“Then what is it?”
“Compensation.”
“For what?”
“For what happened tonight.”
Khloe shook her head.
“I don’t want money because someone felt sorry for me.”
“It is not pity.”
“Then what is it?”
Dominic looked directly at her.
“Justice.”
The word stayed between them.
Khloe looked away.
She wanted to believe him.
That was the problem.
Believing him felt dangerous.
Because if she believed someone actually cared, then she had something to lose.
And Khloe Bennett had spent years avoiding anything that could hurt her.
Dominic noticed the suitcase near the couch.
“You were leaving.”
Khloe stiffened.
“It was a possibility.”
“Because of Vivienne?”
“Because of people like her.”
She looked at him.
“People with power.”
Dominic was silent.
“People who can ruin your life because they are angry.”
“That won’t happen.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes.”
The confidence in his voice made her pause.
“I do.”
Khloe studied him.
“You are very sure of yourself.”
“I have to be.”
“Why?”
“Because people depend on me.”
She looked at him.
“And who do you depend on?”
The question surprised both of them.
For a moment, Dominic had no answer.
That was when Khloe saw it.
A crack.
Very small.
But real.
The man everyone feared did not look afraid of enemies.
He looked afraid of needing someone.
Dominic finally spoke.
“Nobody.”
The honesty was unexpected.
Khloe lowered her eyes.
Neither of them spoke.
The rain continued outside.
Two people from completely different worlds stood inside a small apartment.
One had too much power.
The other had almost none.
Yet somehow, both understood what it felt like to be alone.
Finally, Dominic stepped toward the door.
“Keep the envelope.”
Khloe immediately shook her head.
“I said—”
“I heard you.”
He stopped.
“But sometimes accepting help is not weakness.”
She looked at him.
“It is for people who are used to being helped.”
Dominic looked back at her.
“Then maybe it is time someone changed that.”
Before she could answer, he left.
Khloe stood in the doorway watching him disappear down the hallway.
For the first time in a very long time, she did not feel invisible.
She did not know what Dominic Costello wanted.
She did not know why he cared.
She did not know what danger was coming because of Vivienne Kensington.
But she knew one thing.
The man everyone feared had walked into her broken little apartment...
May you like
and treated her like she was worth protecting.
And that was something Khloe Bennett did not know how to handle.
