Chapter 5 - The Price of Being Seen

For the first time in years, Khloe Bennett woke up without immediately calculating what she had to survive.

Usually, mornings began with numbers.

The amount in her bank account.

The bills waiting on the counter.

The hours she needed to work.

The things she could not afford.

But that morning, the first thing she noticed was the handkerchief sitting beside her coffee cup.

White fabric.

Clean.

Expensive.

A simple object that somehow carried the memory of a night she could not forget.

Dominic Costello.

Khloe frowned at the thought.

She still did not understand him.

People like Dominic were not supposed to notice people like her.

Their worlds were not supposed to touch.

Men like him lived behind private gates, surrounded by security, influence, and people who wanted something from them.

Women like Khloe worked double shifts, counted every dollar, and hoped nobody noticed when life became too difficult.

Yet somehow, the most feared man in Boston had walked into her apartment, looked at her broken furniture, and never once made her feel ashamed.

That bothered her.

Because kindness from strangers was easy to ignore.

But kindness from someone powerful was complicated.

Especially someone like Dominic.

Khloe picked up the handkerchief.

She considered throwing it away.

Instead, she carefully folded it and placed it inside a drawer.

Not because it meant anything.

At least, that was what she told herself.

She got ready for work.

Or rather, she tried to.

When she reached LaRosa that afternoon, she immediately felt the difference.

The restaurant was the same.

The marble floors.

The crystal lights.

The expensive decorations.

But the atmosphere had changed.

People looked at her differently.

Some with curiosity.

Some with fear.

Some with respect.

Khloe hated all of it.

She did not want attention.

Attention had never helped her before.

It only gave people more opportunities to judge.

As she walked toward the kitchen, Marco, the young waiter who had defended her the night before, approached.

“Khloe.”

She smiled slightly.

“Hey.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Are you okay?”

There was that question again.

The one she never knew how to answer.

“I’m fine.”

Marco raised an eyebrow.

She sighed.

“Sorry.”

He smiled.

“You really do say that a lot.”

Khloe looked away.

“I guess I do.”

Marco lowered his voice.

“You know everyone is talking about last night.”

“I know.”

“Vivienne’s family is furious.”

Khloe’s expression changed.

She knew that was coming.

People like Vivienne did not lose gracefully.

“They’re going to do something?”

Marco hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

That answer worried her more than if he had said yes.

Because uncertainty was dangerous.

Especially when powerful people were involved.

Before Khloe could respond, the restaurant owner called her name.

“Khloe.”

Her body immediately tensed.

The same tone.

The same feeling.

Like she was already in trouble.

She walked over.

The owner looked nervous.

“We need to talk.”

Khloe looked around.

“About what?”

He glanced toward the dining room.

“About last night.”

Her stomach tightened.

“I already apologized for the accident.”

His expression changed.

“That’s not what this is about.”

“Then what?”

He lowered his voice.

“You have no idea what kind of situation you created.”

Khloe stared.

“I didn’t create anything.”

The owner looked frustrated.

“Khloe, please. You embarrassed Vivienne Kensington.”

“She embarrassed herself.”

The words came out before she could stop them.

The owner looked surprised.

Maybe because he had never heard Khloe speak that way.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

A silence followed.

Then the owner sighed.

“You don’t understand how these people work.”

Khloe looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“But I understand how people like me are treated.”

The owner had no answer.

Because he knew.

Everyone knew.

They just preferred not to admit it.

Later that afternoon, Khloe received a message.

Unknown number.

Her first instinct was to ignore it.

But then she saw the words.

We need to talk.

No name.

No explanation.

She stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

About last night.

Her heart tightened.

She should not respond.

Every logical part of her mind said that.

But curiosity won.

Who is this?

The answer came immediately.

Dominic Costello.

Khloe stared at the phone.

She almost dropped it.

Why was he contacting her?

Before she could decide whether to answer, another message arrived.

Meet me at 6. Public place. You choose.

That last sentence surprised her.

You choose.

Not an order.

Not a demand.

A choice.

Khloe sat there for a long moment.

Then she typed:

A coffee shop near my apartment.

His reply came seconds later.

I’ll be there.

At six o’clock, Khloe arrived early.

She hated that she was nervous.

This was ridiculous.

She had faced Vivienne Kensington in front of an entire restaurant.

She had stood in front of armed bodyguards.

Yet sitting across from Dominic Costello at a coffee shop somehow made her more anxious.

Maybe because she did not know what he wanted.

When Dominic arrived, several people noticed.

Of course they did.

A man like him could not enter a room unnoticed.

But unlike the night before, he was not surrounded by four guards.

He wore a dark coat over a simple black shirt.

Less like a businessman.

More like a person.

He sat across from her.

“Thank you for meeting me.”

Khloe looked at him carefully.

“You’re welcome.”

The words sounded strange.

Dominic glanced around.

“You chose this place because it feels safe.”

She frowned.

“Is that a problem?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I think it was smart.”

That surprised her.

“You compliment people often?”

“No.”

She almost smiled.

“Thought so.”

For a brief second, something changed between them.

A normal conversation.

A normal moment.

Then Dominic became serious.

“I need to tell you something.”

Khloe immediately became cautious.

“What?”

“Last night did not end at the restaurant.”

She knew it.

She felt it.

“Vivienne?”

“Her family.”

Khloe looked down.

“I knew it.”

Dominic watched her.

“You’re not surprised.”

“No.”

She looked back at him.

“People like that don’t lose.”

Dominic was quiet.

Then he said:

“You’re wrong.”

Khloe raised an eyebrow.

“They usually don’t.”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“They usually make everyone else believe they can’t lose.”

That answer stayed with her.

Dominic continued.

“Vivienne’s father has influence. He has people who will try to protect his reputation.”

“And what does that mean for me?”

Dominic did not avoid the question.

“It means you may become a target.”

Khloe laughed softly.

“Because I spilled soup on a dress?”

“Because you refused to stay silent.”

She looked at him.

There was something almost strange about the way he said it.

Like he respected that more than anything else.

“I don’t want protection.”

Dominic expected that answer.

“I know.”

“Then why offer it?”

“Because I know how this world works.”

Khloe folded her arms.

“And I don’t?”

He paused.

“No.”

The honesty surprised her.

“You don’t.”

She looked offended.

But Dominic continued.

“Not because you are weak.”

His eyes met hers.

“Because you are still kind.”

Khloe became quiet.

“You think kindness is a disadvantage?”

“In my world?”

A pause.

“Sometimes.”

She looked away.

“Then maybe I shouldn’t enter your world.”

Dominic studied her.

“Maybe not.”

The answer surprised her.

Most powerful men would have argued.

Would have insisted.

Would have tried to convince her.

But Dominic simply accepted her choice.

And somehow that made her trust him more.

Then he said something she did not expect.

“But your world already entered mine.”

Khloe looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic leaned back slightly.

“It means everyone in that restaurant expected you to break.”

He paused.

“You didn’t.”

The coffee shop became quiet.

For the first time, Khloe did not feel like someone was looking at her appearance.

They were looking at her.

The real her.

“I’m not special,” she whispered.

Dominic’s expression softened.

“That is exactly what makes you different.”

She looked down.

She did not know how to respond.

Because compliments were easy from people who wanted something.

But Dominic wanted nothing.

At least, nothing she could see.

When they left the coffee shop, the rain had started again.

Dominic opened the door for her.

A small gesture.

Almost ordinary.

But Khloe noticed.

Because ordinary kindness had become extraordinary in her life.

Before she walked away, Dominic called her name.

“Khloe.”

She turned.

“Be careful.”

The concern in his voice was real.

And that scared her.

Because for the first time in a long time...

someone was worried about her.

Not because she was useful.

Not because she could do something for them.

Simply because she mattered.

Khloe walked home through the rain.

She still did not know if trusting Dominic Costello was a mistake.

She still did not know what dangers were coming.

But somewhere between the restaurant and that coffee shop, something had changed.

The world had spent years telling Khloe Bennett she was invisible.

Dominic Costello had done the opposite.

May you like

He had seen her.

And now, everyone else was starting to look.
