Chapter 6 - The Night Blackthorne Fell Silent

Thomas was alive.

Barely.

The bullet struck his shoulder instead of his chest because Adrian had pushed him aside at the last second.

Marcus's men pursued the shooter.

No capture.

But they found a vehicle abandoned two miles away.

Registered through another Samuel Cross company.

Thomas was taken to a private medical facility.

Clara sat beside him all night.

At dawn, he opened his eyes.

"You're real," she whispered.

Thomas smiled weakly.

"So are you."

She cried.

He cried.

Twenty-eight years disappeared for several minutes.

Then reality returned.

"Samuel knows you found me," Thomas said.

Adrian stood near the door.

"Good."

Thomas looked at him.

"You must be Augustus's son."

"Unfortunately."

"You don't look like him."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"It is."

Thomas told them everything.

Samuel Cross had spent thirty years building power beneath more powerful men.

He stole.

Blackmailed.

Killed.

When threatened, he blamed Augustus.

When Augustus died, Samuel quietly took control of hidden accounts.

Elena discovered the system while reviewing charitable foundation transfers.

"She contacted me," Thomas said.

Adrian stared.

"When?"

"Five months ago."

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"She said you would burn the city down."

Clara glanced toward Adrian.

He sighed.

"Everyone apparently agrees."

Thomas smiled faintly.

"She loved you."

Adrian looked away.

"She wanted evidence before involving you. She thought if Samuel realized you knew, he'd target the baby."

"She was right."

Thomas nodded.

"I gave her copies."

"The blue ledger?"

"Part of it."

"Where's the original evidence?"

Thomas looked at Clara.

"Somewhere Samuel can't access."

"Where?"

"Federal custody."

Adrian frowned.

"Then why does Samuel need Clara?"

"He doesn't."

Clara stared.

"What?"

Thomas continued.

"He needed me to believe he needed Clara."

Adrian understood first.

"A trap."

Thomas nodded.

"Samuel knew Elena had contacted me. He couldn't find me. So he watched Clara. He knew if he threatened her, eventually I'd come out."

Clara went pale.

"And I did."

"Yes."

Adrian turned toward Marcus.

"Move Leo."

Marcus immediately called Blackthorne.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Adrian's blood went cold.

"Daniel."

No answer.

"Eva."

No answer.

Nursery feed.

Offline.

Adrian was already moving.

They drove back at impossible speed.

Blackthorne House appeared intact.

Too intact.

Gate open.

No guards visible.

Front door open.

Adrian entered with weapon drawn.

"Leo!"

Silence.

No staff.

No security.

Nothing.

The entire mansion seemed abandoned.

They reached the nursery.

Empty crib.

Clara covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at the blanket.

His entire world narrowed.

"No."

Marcus checked the monitor.

A recorded file waited.

He pressed play.

Samuel Cross appeared on screen.

Gray hair.

Tall.

Calm.

"Adrian."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Samuel smiled.

"You always were your father's son when frightened."

"Where is my son?"

The recording continued.

"I have Leo. I have Eva. I have Daniel."

Clara whispered, "Rose?"

Samuel answered from the recording.

"The other child is unharmed. For now."

Adrian nearly broke the monitor.

Marcus caught his arm.

"Watch."

Samuel continued.

"Bring Thomas Bennett and the original evidence to Pier Nine at midnight. No police. No federal agents."

Thomas appeared behind Samuel in real time?

No.

Adrian looked closer.

Daniel was tied to a chair.

Eva beside him.

Leo in a carrier on a table.

He was crying.

Adrian's face collapsed for half a second.

Clara grabbed his hand.

"He's alive."

Samuel leaned toward the camera.

"Midnight."

The video ended.

Thomas arrived two hours later against medical advice.

"You aren't going," Clara said.

"I am."

"He'll kill you."

"He'll kill everyone if I don't."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Thomas looked at him.

"That's my daughter in this house."

"And that's my son."

"So you understand."

Adrian did.

That was the problem.

They created a plan.

Federal agents already had Thomas's evidence.

Samuel did not know that.

They would bring a replica drive.

Marcus would position men outside Pier Nine.

Thomas would wear a transmitter.

Clara was ordered to remain behind.

She refused.

Adrian argued.

She refused again.

Finally he said, "I can't lose someone else."

The room became silent.

Clara looked at him.

He had not meant to say it.

But there it was.

Not an order.

Not strategy.

Fear.

She stepped closer.

"You won't."

"You can't promise that."

She recognized her own words.

"No," she said. "I can't."

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time, he allowed himself to reach for her.

He touched her cheek.

Nothing more.

No kiss.

Not yet.

"I don't know what this is," he said.

"Neither do I."

"I still love Elena."

"I know."

"I always will."

"You should."

His eyes closed briefly.

Clara whispered, "Loving someone who died doesn't mean you have to die with them."

Adrian opened his eyes.

Midnight approached.

Pier Nine was an abandoned warehouse by the river.

Samuel waited inside.

Leo cried somewhere behind a wall.

Adrian heard him.

Every instinct screamed to run.

Thomas walked beside him.

Clara remained hidden with Marcus despite hating it.

Samuel appeared on an upper platform.

"Thomas Bennett."

Thomas looked up.

"Samuel."

"Twenty-eight years."

"Not long enough."

Samuel smiled.

"Drive."

Thomas held it up.

"Children first."

Samuel laughed.

"You aren't negotiating."

Adrian stepped forward.

"I am."

Samuel's smile disappeared.

Adrian said, "You want the drive because you think it contains evidence."

"It does."

"No. Federal prosecutors already have everything."

Samuel went still.

Thomas smiled.

"You lost years ago."

Gunmen emerged.

Marcus whispered into Clara's earpiece.

"Stay down."

Samuel's face changed.

"You lied."

Thomas said, "Frequently."

Samuel raised a gun toward him.

Adrian moved.

Everything happened at once.

Lights went out.

Marcus's team entered.

Daniel knocked over his chair.

Eva screamed.

Clara ran toward the sound of Leo.

"Clara!" Adrian shouted.

She ignored him.

She found the baby carrier behind stacked crates.

Leo was crying.

She lifted him.

"You're okay."

A shadow moved behind her.

Samuel.

He had escaped the platform.

He pointed the gun at Clara.

"Put him down."

Clara froze.

Samuel smiled.

"Elena chose you because she thought kindness could save this family."

Clara held Leo tighter.

"She was smarter than you."

Samuel's eyes hardened.

"Put. Him. Down."

Adrian appeared twenty feet away.

Samuel swung the gun toward Leo.

Adrian stopped.

"Samuel."

"Drop yours."

Adrian did.

The weapon hit the floor.

Samuel smiled.

"There. Your father never would have done that."

Adrian looked at his son.

"No."

He slowly raised his empty hands.

"He wouldn't."

Samuel stepped backward toward the exit.

Clara saw Adrian's expression.

He wasn't surrendering.

He was waiting.

"For what?" Samuel asked.

Adrian looked past him.

Samuel turned.

Thomas Bennett stood behind him.

Bleeding through his bandage.

Holding nothing.

Just standing there.

Samuel laughed.

"You're unarmed."

Thomas nodded.

"I know."

Then federal agents flooded the doorway behind him.

Samuel spun toward Clara.

One desperate movement.

Adrian lunged.

The gun fired.

Clara screamed.

May you like

Leo screamed.

And Adrian Vale fell to the floor.
