Chapter 3 - The Letter Beneath the Blanket

Adrian did not move for three seconds.

Then he handed Leo to Clara.

"Lock the door."

"You're going downstairs?"

"Yes."

"That woman may be dangerous."

"So may I."

"That's not reassuring."

He looked at her.

"Lock it."

Clara did.

Marcus met Adrian halfway down the stairs.

"You saw the feed?"

"Yes."

"Gate team has weapons on them."

"Nobody fires."

"Daniel brought an unidentified woman and an infant onto your property after your dead wife warned you about him."

"I said nobody fires."

Marcus nodded.

They entered the front hall.

Daniel was escorted in first.

Eva followed.

She looked older than Elena's photographs, but unmistakable.

Same pale eyes.

Same narrow chin.

Same tiny scar near the right eyebrow.

Adrian had seen that scar in framed family pictures.

Eva looked at him.

"You have Elena's eyes when you're angry."

Adrian's expression did not change.

"You were dead."

"No."

"My wife mourned you."

"She mourned what she thought happened."

Daniel interrupted.

"Maybe everyone should sit down."

Adrian turned toward him.

"Speak again without permission."

Daniel stopped.

Eva looked almost amused.

"Still charming."

"Who is the baby?"

Her amusement disappeared.

She looked down.

The infant in her arms was slightly older than Leo.

"Her name is Rose."

"Yours?"

"Yes."

"Father?"

Eva glanced toward Daniel.

Adrian felt something cold move through him.

Daniel looked at the floor.

"You're the father," Adrian said.

Daniel sighed.

"It's complicated."

"No. Biology is simple."

"Eva and I—"

"How long?"

"Four years."

Adrian stared at him.

"You knew she was alive."

"Yes."

"Elena didn't."

Daniel hesitated.

"Not until last year."

Eva closed her eyes briefly.

Adrian looked at her.

"Why fake your death?"

"I didn't."

"Explain."

Eva shifted Rose.

"Twelve years ago, I was driving home from college. My car went off a bridge."

"I know the story."

"My body was never recovered."

"Because you weren't in the car?"

"Because someone forced me out before it went over."

Adrian went still.

"Who?"

Eva looked directly at him.

"Your father."

The words landed differently than any accusation against Adrian himself.

Augustus Vale had been dead seven years.

He had built the Vale organization.

He had also been feared by his sons.

"What did Elena have to do with it?"

"Nothing. She was nineteen."

"Why target you?"

"Because I saw something."

"What?"

"A murder."

Daniel interrupted.

"Eva—"

Adrian looked at him.

"One more time and I'll have Marcus remove you."

Eva continued.

"Your father killed a state witness. I saw him."

"Why not kill you?"

"He tried."

"But you escaped."

"Barely."

"Where did you go?"

"Canada first. Then Europe."

"And you let your sister believe you were dead."

Tears appeared in Eva's eyes.

"I was told Elena would die if I contacted her."

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"And then you found her."

Daniel nodded.

"Four years ago."

"How?"

"Accidentally."

"Nothing with you is accidental."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I was in Prague. I saw her at a restaurant."

"You kept it secret."

"Yes."

"You started sleeping with my wife's supposedly dead sister."

"Eventually."

Adrian took one step toward him.

Marcus shifted.

Daniel did not.

"Elena discovered us last year," Daniel said.

Adrian stopped.

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

Eva answered.

"Because I begged her not to."

"Why?"

"Because someone was still watching us."

"Who?"

"We didn't know."

Adrian laughed once without humor.

"My wife dies, you appear carrying my brother's child, and now I'm supposed to believe some invisible enemy has been watching your family for twelve years."

Eva looked toward the stairs.

"Where is Leo?"

Adrian's expression changed.

"You don't say his name."

"Elena asked me to protect him."

"Elena asked you?"

Eva nodded.

"At the hospital."

The room became silent.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"She called me."

"When?"

"The night before she went into labor."

"What did she say?"

"That she had found proof."

"The blue ledger?"

Eva stared.

"You found it."

"Answer."

"Yes."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Why did Elena have financial records connecting Daniel to you?"

"Because Daniel had been moving money to keep me hidden."

"Three million dollars?"

"Safe houses. Lawyers. Medical care."

Daniel added, "And Rose."

Adrian ignored him.

"What proof did Elena find?"

Eva's face changed.

"That Augustus Vale didn't act alone twelve years ago."

"He's dead."

"The other man isn't."

"Name."

Eva swallowed.

"I don't know."

Adrian's patience snapped.

"You came into my house carrying secrets while my wife is underground. You will give me a name."

"I don't know his name."

"Then what do you know?"

Eva looked toward Marcus.

And said nothing.

Adrian noticed.

Marcus noticed.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Adrian slowly turned.

"Why are you looking at him?"

Eva's voice trembled.

"The man who followed me after the crash had a tattoo."

Marcus remained still.

"What tattoo?" Adrian asked.

"A black crown behind his left ear."

Everyone looked at Marcus.

Marcus Hale had worn his hair long for as long as Adrian had known him.

Adrian stared at him.

"Turn around."

Marcus did not move.

"Marcus."

"Adrian."

"Turn around."

Slowly, Marcus turned.

Adrian stepped close.

He lifted the hair behind Marcus's left ear.

Nothing.

No tattoo.

Eva exhaled.

"I didn't say it was him."

Adrian lowered his hand.

Marcus looked irritated but composed.

"Then why look at me?"

"Because he was standing behind your father the night I saw the murder."

Adrian turned.

"What?"

Eva nodded.

"He was younger. But it was him."

Marcus's face darkened.

"I worked security for Augustus."

"You never told me you knew Eva."

"I didn't."

"She knew you."

"She saw me."

"Same difference."

"No, it isn't."

Adrian had trusted Marcus for fifteen years.

Marcus had saved his life twice.

He had stood beside Adrian at Elena's funeral.

He had carried Leo from the hospital when Adrian could not bring himself to do it.

Now Eva was telling him Marcus had been connected to the night her life disappeared.

"Did my father order her death?"

Marcus said nothing.

Adrian's voice became quieter.

"Did he?"

"Yes."

Clara heard the confession from the top of the stairs.

She had opened the nursery door because Leo had awakened.

Adrian looked up and saw her holding his son.

Her face was pale.

Marcus continued.

"I refused."

Adrian looked back.

"What?"

"Augustus ordered me to finish what the crash didn't. I told him she was dead."

Eva stared.

Marcus looked at her.

"I found blood near the road. No body. I knew you escaped."

"You lied to him?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"You were nineteen."

Eva's eyes filled.

Marcus turned toward Adrian.

"Your father was many things. I worked for him because leaving wasn't simple. But I didn't murder children."

Adrian said, "You should have told me."

"When?"

"Any time in fifteen years."

"And what would you have done?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

Clara descended slowly with Leo.

Eva looked at him.

"Oh."

Her face broke.

"He looks like Elena."

Adrian moved instinctively between them.

Eva noticed.

"I won't touch him."

Clara looked at Adrian.

"You should let her see him."

Adrian stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because your wife trusted her enough to call her at the hospital."

Eva began crying silently.

"She held my hand," she said. "During the contractions. She kept asking where you were."

Adrian's face changed.

"I was meeting with prosecutors."

"I know."

"She told me not to cancel."

"I know."

"What else did she say?"

Eva looked at Leo.

"She said you'd blame yourself."

Adrian stopped breathing.

"She knew you," Eva whispered. "She said you'd spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for missing the last hours."

Adrian looked away.

Clara saw the grief break through.

Eva continued.

"She told me to tell you it wasn't your fault."

Adrian's voice turned hard again.

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I got scared."

"Of whom?"

Eva looked toward the windows.

"The man with the crown tattoo."

Marcus frowned.

"You saw him again?"

"At the hospital."

Adrian turned sharply.

"When?"

"Twenty minutes before Elena collapsed."

Daniel stood.

"You never told me that."

"I didn't tell anyone."

"What did he look like?" Adrian demanded.

"Sixties. Gray hair. Tall. Surgical mask. He was watching from the corridor."

"Did Elena see him?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"She panicked."

"Then?"

"She made me promise to leave."

"You abandoned her?"

Eva flinched.

"She begged me."

Adrian turned away before anger overtook reason.

Clara approached him.

"Adrian."

"Not now."

"Look at Leo."

He did.

His son stared sleepily from her arms.

Clara lowered her voice.

"Don't become the man everyone expects you to become when you're hurt."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"What man is that?"

"The one who destroys everything before learning what happened."

No one in the room spoke.

Adrian looked at Elena's sister.

Then Daniel.

Then Marcus.

"Nobody leaves Blackthorne tonight."

Daniel frowned.

"You're imprisoning us?"

"I'm protecting Leo."

"From whom?"

Adrian looked around the room.

"That's what we're going to discover."

At 4:17 a.m., they spread Elena's ledger across the library table.

Marcus found coded transfers.

Daniel identified shell corporations.

Eva recognized two addresses from safe houses.

Clara sat nearby with Leo.

Adrian traced one recurring payment.

Every month.

For twelve years.

Same amount.

$25,000.

Different account numbers.

Same authorization code.

A.V.

Adrian frowned.

"Augustus Vale."

Marcus shook his head.

"Not possible."

"Why?"

"Payments continued after your father died."

Adrian checked the dates.

Marcus was right.

Someone had continued using Augustus's authorization code for seven years after his death.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Who had access?"

Marcus answered.

"Family accountant."

Adrian looked at him.

"Samuel Cross."

Daniel went pale.

Eva whispered, "How old is he?"

"Sixty-four."

"Gray hair?"

"Yes."

"Tall?"

"Yes."

Marcus stood.

"Samuel was at the hospital."

Adrian looked up.

"What?"

"He came to Elena's funeral arrangements meeting."

"When?"

"The day Leo was born."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

Clara's phone vibrated.

She glanced at it.

Her expression changed.

Adrian noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Clara."

She slowly turned the screen toward him.

An unknown number had sent a photograph.

It showed Clara standing in the nursery ten minutes earlier, holding Leo.

The picture had been taken from inside the house.

Beneath it was one sentence.

GIVE US THE LEDGER OR THE BOY LOSES ANOTHER WOMAN.

Adrian stared at the message.

Then every light in Blackthorne House went out.

May you like

In the darkness, Leo began screaming.

And somewhere upstairs, a door slammed shut.
