Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden in the Envelope

The older man’s hand trembled as he held the envelope in front of everyone.

Simone stared at it.

Her name was written across the front.

Not Clara’s.

Not their parents’.

Hers.

For a moment, the entire ballroom disappeared.

The music.

The guests.

The whispers.

Everything faded.

Because Simone knew that handwriting.

She had seen it once before.

On a birthday card she received when she was sixteen.

A card from someone who was supposed to be gone forever.

Her mother.

"Where did you get that?" Simone asked quietly.

The older man looked uncomfortable.

His eyes moved toward her father.

That small movement was enough.

Simone understood.

Someone had known about this.

Someone had hidden it.

Her father, Richard Bellamy, immediately stepped forward.

"Give me that."

The man holding the envelope tightened his grip.

"Mr. Bellamy, I think after what happened tonight, everyone deserves to know the truth."

Richard’s expression changed.

For the first time that evening, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not embarrassed.

Afraid.

Alessandro Romano noticed.

He noticed everything.

He stood beside Simone, watching the exchange silently.

His presence alone changed the atmosphere.

People who had been whispering moments earlier suddenly stopped.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing.

Alessandro was not a man who ignored secrets.

"Open it," Alessandro said.

His voice was calm.

But nobody dared challenge him.

Richard looked at him.

"This is a private family issue."

Alessandro glanced at Simone.

"No."

A pause.

"It became public the moment your daughter was humiliated in front of everyone."

The words hit harder than anyone expected.

Simone looked down.

She was still trying to understand why Alessandro was defending her.

They had met less than an hour ago.

Yet he treated her with more kindness than her own family had shown her for years.

The older man slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

And a photograph.

The photograph fell first.

Simone saw it land on the marble floor.

Her heart stopped.

Because it showed a younger version of herself.

Sixteen years old.

Standing beside her mother.

A mother everyone told her she had lost.

But the picture was not what shocked her.

It was the writing on the back.

The older man turned it over.

Four words were written there.

"Protect Simone from them."

The room went silent.

Simone felt cold.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

She looked at her father.

Then her mother’s relatives.

Then Clara.

Her sister looked different now.

The confidence was gone.

"You knew," Simone whispered.

Clara immediately looked away.

That was enough.

Simone felt the truth before anyone admitted it.

Her sister knew.

Her family knew.

Everyone knew something she didn’t.

"What happened to my mother?"

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Richard Bellamy stepped forward.

"Simone, you don't understand."

"No."

She looked directly at him.

"I understand perfectly."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"You let me believe she abandoned me."

The guests watched silently.

Nobody moved.

Because this was no longer a wedding.

It was a family being torn apart.

Richard’s face hardened.

"You need to leave this alone."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

"You don't tell her what she needs to know."

Richard looked at him.

"You have no idea what you're involving yourself in."

Alessandro took one step forward.

"Then explain."

Richard said nothing.

And that silence answered more than words.

Simone looked at the envelope again.

Her hands shook as she picked up the photograph.

The woman beside her looked happy.

Alive.

Different from the memory Simone carried.

Her mother had always been described as fragile.

Unstable.

Someone who disappeared because she could not handle responsibility.

But the woman in the photograph did not look broken.

She looked determined.

Like someone preparing for a fight.

"There is more inside," the older man said.

Simone looked at him.

"What?"

He handed her the paper.

Her fingers unfolded it slowly.

The letter was short.

Only a few sentences.

But every word felt impossible.

Simone, if you are reading this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth.

Her breathing stopped.

Do not trust anyone who tells you I left willingly.

Her eyes moved down.

The person who hurt me is still close to you.

Simone froze.

A strange silence filled the ballroom.

Alessandro watched her face change.

"What does it say?"

Simone looked up.

But before she could answer, Clara suddenly grabbed the letter.

"No."

The movement shocked everyone.

Clara pulled the paper away.

For the first time all night, she looked terrified.

Simone stared at her sister.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

Because Clara’s reaction revealed something.

She knew exactly what was written.

"You knew about this letter," Simone said.

Clara’s lips parted.

"I..."

"You knew."

Clara looked toward their father.

A silent conversation passed between them.

And Simone saw it.

The same look.

The same fear.

They had been hiding this together.

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Give her the letter."

Clara slowly handed it back.

But before Simone could read the rest, Richard grabbed Alessandro’s arm.

It was a mistake.

A very serious mistake.

Everyone in the room immediately noticed.

Because nobody touched Alessandro Romano.

Not unless they were ready for consequences.

Alessandro looked down at Richard’s hand.

Then back at his face.

"Remove your hand."

Richard immediately let go.

But his expression changed.

"You don't know what you're protecting."

Alessandro remained calm.

"Then tell me."

Richard looked at Simone.

His voice lowered.

"Your mother wasn't the victim you think she was."

Simone stared at him.

The words hurt.

Not because she believed him.

Because she realized this was the same story they had used for years.

A story designed to make her stop asking questions.

"My mother was dangerous?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"She discovered things she should never have discovered."

"What things?"

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

Simone followed his gaze.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark suit.

Holding a small black box.

Nobody recognized him.

Except Richard.

The color disappeared from her father’s face.

"No..."

The stranger slowly walked forward.

The guests moved away.

Alessandro immediately placed himself between Simone and the man.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Simone.

"I knew your mother."

Simone’s heart raced.

"How?"

The man looked at the letter in her hand.

Then at the photograph.

"Because I was there the night she disappeared."

The ballroom went silent again.

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

"What do you want?"

The stranger opened the black box.

Inside was a necklace.

A necklace Simone had seen once before.

In an old photograph of her mother.

The man looked at Simone.

"Your mother told me that if they ever found this..."

He paused.

Then he stepped closer.

"...I was supposed to give it to you."

Simone reached toward the necklace.

But before her fingers touched it, the stranger whispered something that made Alessandro immediately turn around.

"Because the person who betrayed your mother is standing in this room."

Everyone froze.

Then the stranger pointed toward the back of the ballroom.

May you like

Toward the person Simone trusted most.

And that person slowly stepped forward.
