Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Betrayal

The stranger pointed toward the back of the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

Simone followed his eyes.

And her heart stopped.

The person standing there was not her father.

Not Clara.

Not one of the guests.

It was her aunt, Margaret Bellamy.

The woman who had comforted Simone after her mother disappeared.

The woman who had held her hand during the funeral.

The woman who had told her, "Some people leave because they were never meant to stay."

For twelve years, Simone believed Margaret was the only person in her family who truly cared about her.

Now Margaret stood frozen.

Like someone who had just been exposed.

"No," Simone whispered.

The word came out before she could stop it.

Margaret looked down.

That was the answer.

She knew.

She had always known.

Alessandro watched Simone carefully.

He saw the pain in her eyes.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

"Margaret," Richard said sharply.

The older woman looked at him.

And Simone noticed something strange.

They were not looking at each other like family.

They were looking at each other like partners.

Like two people who had shared a secret for years.

The stranger holding the black box stepped forward.

"Tell her."

Margaret remained silent.

"Tell her what happened that night."

The ballroom was completely quiet.

Even the guests who had come only for the wedding were now trapped inside a mystery they could not ignore.

Simone tightened her grip around the photograph.

"My mother trusted you."

Margaret finally looked at her.

Her eyes were filled with guilt.

"Simone..."

"No."

Simone shook her head.

"Don't say my name like you didn't do anything."

The words cut through the room.

For years, Simone had been polite.

Careful.

Forgiving.

But tonight something inside her had changed.

She had spent her entire life accepting pieces of a story that other people created for her.

And now she wanted the truth.

"Did you know my mother was alive after the night she disappeared?"

Nobody answered.

That silence was louder than anything.

Simone looked at Margaret.

"Did you?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

A single tear moved down her cheek.

"Yes."

The room erupted with whispers.

Simone felt like the floor moved beneath her.

Her mother was alive.

Or at least she had been.

And everyone had lied.

"Why?"

Her voice broke.

"Why would you let me believe she abandoned me?"

Margaret looked devastated.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

Simone laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

"Protect me?"

She looked around the ballroom.

"By letting me grow up thinking my own mother didn't want me?"

Margaret stepped closer.

"I had no choice."

Alessandro immediately moved slightly forward.

Not aggressively.

Just enough to remind everyone Simone was not alone.

"Everyone says that when they don't want to admit what they did."

Margaret looked at him.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Alessandro’s voice remained cold.

"I understand perfectly."

The stranger opened the black box again.

Inside the necklace was a small hidden compartment.

Simone noticed it.

"What's that?"

The stranger looked at her.

"Your mother put something inside before she disappeared."

Alessandro took the necklace carefully.

He examined it.

A tiny mechanism was hidden beneath the pendant.

With a small click, the back opened.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Simone's breathing became uneven.

Another message.

Another secret.

She reached for it.

But Richard suddenly stepped forward.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was no longer controlled.

It was desperate.

"You don't know what you're opening."

Simone stared at her father.

"That is exactly why I need to see it."

Richard shook his head.

"You think this will give you answers."

"It will."

"No."

His expression changed.

"It will destroy everything."

The sentence stayed in the air.

Because for the first time, Richard admitted there was something worth hiding.

Simone slowly unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was familiar.

Her mother’s.

Only three lines were written.

Simone.

If you found this, they failed to erase the truth.

The person closest to you is the reason I disappeared.

Simone stopped breathing.

Everyone saw her expression change.

Alessandro looked at the paper.

"Who?"

Simone didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Because her eyes were moving across the room.

Looking at every person who had raised her.

Every person who had lied.

Then her eyes stopped.

On Clara.

Her sister looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

"You knew too."

Clara shook her head immediately.

"No."

But her voice was weak.

Simone walked toward her.

"You knew."

"I didn't know everything."

"How much did you know?"

Clara looked away.

That was enough.

Simone felt something break inside her.

The sister who had spent years making her feel worthless had been protecting a secret about their mother.

"What did she tell you?"

Clara remained silent.

"Clara."

The way Simone said her name made the entire room uncomfortable.

Because it was not the voice of the sister everyone ignored anymore.

It was the voice of someone who finally demanded respect.

Clara swallowed.

"She came to me."

Simone froze.

"When?"

"Three days before she disappeared."

The room became still.

"You saw her?"

Clara nodded.

Simone stepped back.

"All these years..."

Her voice became softer.

"You knew where she was?"

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"Then what did you know?"

Clara looked at their father.

Then Margaret.

Then Richard.

And Simone realized something.

Clara was afraid.

Not of Simone.

Of someone else.

Someone who had more power than their entire family.

Alessandro noticed it too.

"Who are you afraid of?"

Clara didn't answer.

The stranger suddenly spoke.

"She was afraid because your mother discovered the Bellamy family wasn't the only one involved."

Alessandro looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

The stranger looked toward Simone.

"Your mother found proof that someone powerful had been controlling your family for years."

Simone frowned.

"Who?"

Before he could answer, every light in the ballroom suddenly went out.

Guests screamed.

The room disappeared into darkness.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then a phone rang.

One single sound.

Echoing through the dark ballroom.

Alessandro immediately reached for Simone.

"Stay behind me."

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody claimed it.

Nobody moved toward it.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

A recording.

A woman’s voice.

Simone recognized it instantly.

Her mother.

"If you are hearing this..."

Simone covered her mouth.

The entire room froze.

"Then they know I failed to protect my daughter."

A wave of fear moved through the crowd.

Richard whispered:

"No..."

The recording continued.

"Simone, listen carefully."

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the screen above the wedding stage turned on.

A security camera image appeared.

Showing the ballroom.

Showing everyone inside.

But the timestamp was from twelve years ago.

And standing beside Simone’s mother in the video was someone nobody expected.

Someone who was supposed to have never been there.

The image zoomed closer.

And Simone saw the face clearly.
