Chapter 5 - The Truth Buried Beneath My Father's Grave

The message stayed on my phone screen.
One location.
One name.
My father's name.
For eight years, I had believed my father was gone.
Buried.
Finished.
But someone wanted me to believe otherwise.
And whoever sent that message knew something about my family that I didn't.
That was the part I couldn't accept.
I was Damian Costa.
I knew every person who worked for me.
Every enemy who wanted me gone.
Every secret deal made under my name.
But somehow, the biggest secret had been hidden from me.
Inside my own family.
"Boss."
My security chief approached carefully.
"What are your orders?"
I looked at Leo.
Then Elena.
Then the message again.
COME ALONE.
That was the kind of mistake people made when they thought they had power over you.
They believed you had no choice.
They believed fear controlled you.
But they were wrong.
The only thing that controlled me was my son.
And my son was lying in a hospital bed because of secrets I should have uncovered years ago.
"I'm going."
Everyone reacted immediately.
"No."
Elena's voice stopped the room.
I turned.
She looked at me.
"You can't go alone."
The old Damian Costa would have ignored her.
The old Damian Costa would have reminded her who I was.
But something had changed.
Because Elena was the only person in that room who had proven she cared about Leo without wanting anything from me.
"Why?"
She looked at the message.
"Because whoever sent that knows exactly what matters to you."
I waited.
"They know your weakness."
My eyes moved toward my son.
Leo.
She was right.
My enemies had spent years trying to find my weakness.
They finally found it.
Not money.
Not power.
Not territory.
My child.
Marco stepped forward.
"I'll go with you."
I looked at him.
"You betrayed my trust."
His face tightened.
"I know."
"Why should I believe anything you say?"
He looked down.
"Because if I wanted you dead, you wouldn't be standing here."
Nobody spoke.
I hated that he was right.
"Stay with Leo."
Marco looked surprised.
"What?"
"You heard me."
I looked at Elena.
"Both of you."
She immediately understood.
"You think this is a trap."
"I know it is."
I put the phone in my pocket.
"But I need to know who built it."
An hour later, I was standing in front of the place where my father had been buried.
Costa family property.
A private cemetery hidden outside the city.
The same place where I had said goodbye eight years ago.
The same place where I watched them lower his coffin into the ground.
The night was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked alone between the graves.
Exactly as the message demanded.
The cold stone beneath my shoes reminded me of something my father once told me.
"Damian, the most dangerous people are not the ones who hate you."
I remembered his voice.
"They are the ones who love you enough to hurt you."
At the time, I thought he was talking about enemies.
Now I wondered if he was warning me about family.
I reached my father's grave.
Nothing.
No person waiting.
No weapon.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Then I noticed something.
The grave marker was different.
My father's name was carved into the stone.
But beneath it...
There was a scratch.
A new mark.
I touched it.
It wasn't damage.
It was a symbol.
One I had seen before.
On old documents.
On hidden files.
On records my father had locked away.
A symbol belonging to a secret organization inside the Costa empire.
An organization I thought was destroyed.
The Order.
My father had always denied its existence.
Everyone did.
Until now.
I heard footsteps.
I turned.
A man stepped out from behind the trees.
Older.
Gray hair.
Walking slowly.
My hand moved toward my weapon.
Then I stopped.
Because I recognized him.
Not from today.
From my childhood.
"My God..."
The man smiled sadly.
"You're taller than I remember."
I stared.
Impossible.
"You knew my father."
The man looked at the grave.
"I worked for him."
"Who are you?"
He looked at me.
"My name is Samuel."
The name meant nothing.
But his face did.
Because I remembered him.
He was in old family photographs.
Always standing behind my father.
Always watching.
Always silent.
"You were his advisor."
Samuel nodded.
"And you were the only person your father trusted completely."
I stepped closer.
"Then why did he hide you?"
Samuel looked away.
"Because he was trying to protect you."
I almost laughed.
"Everyone says that."
"Because it's true."
I stared at him.
"My father is dead."
Samuel's expression changed.
"No."
The word hit me.
"What did you say?"
"He wanted the world to think he was dead."
My heart stopped.
The cemetery suddenly felt smaller.
"Explain."
Samuel looked toward the grave.
"Your father discovered someone inside the family was preparing to destroy everything he built."
"Antonio."
Samuel didn't answer.
That was an answer.
My fists tightened.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he knew you would confront them."
"Of course I would."
"And you would have died."
The words were quiet.
But they carried weight.
I looked away.
Because deep down...
I knew my father.
And I knew myself.
I would have gone after anyone who threatened my family.
Even if it killed me.
Samuel reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"My father left this for me?"
"No."
Samuel handed it to me.
"He left it for you."
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of me.
As a child.
Standing beside my father.
And behind us...
Was Antonio.
But there was something else.
Written on the back.
A message from my father.
I read the words.
My hands went cold.
"Damian, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you."
I kept reading.
"Trust no Costa who tells you they are family."
My breathing stopped.
Because my father had written one final sentence.
And that sentence changed everything.
"Your brother is not the person you should fear."
I looked at Samuel.
"Then who?"
Before he could answer...
His phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his entire face changed.
"What?"
I watched him listen.
Then slowly look at me.
"Damian..."
"What?"
He lowered the phone.
"The hospital."
Every instinct inside me awakened.
"What happened?"
Samuel didn't answer immediately.
That terrified me.
"What happened?"
He finally spoke.
"Someone just entered Leo's room."
I took one step forward.
"Who?"
Samuel looked at the phone.
Then back at me.
"The person using your father's name."
My blood turned cold.
Because at that exact moment...
my own phone received a message.
A photograph.
Taken inside Leo's hospital room.
May you like
And standing beside my son's bed was the one person I never expected to see.
Elena.
