Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Cleaning Lady

The man standing in the doorway looked like a ghost from a past I had buried years ago.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even my men, the ones who had faced armed enemies without blinking, froze when they saw him.

Because everyone in that room knew one thing.

That man was supposed to be dead.

His name was Marco Bellini.

And five years earlier, I had watched him disappear.

Not disappear like someone leaving the city.

Disappear like someone who had been erased.

His house burned.

His records vanished.

His enemies celebrated.

And the last message I received about him was simple.

Marco Bellini is gone.

But now he was standing in my son's hospital room.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

His face carried scars I had never seen before.

His eyes carried secrets nobody wanted to hear.

And the first thing he said was not a greeting.

It was a warning.

"Damian."

My hand slowly moved toward my jacket.

Not for a gun.

For control.

Because when emotions took over, people died.

And I had spent my entire life making sure I was never controlled by emotion.

But that night was different.

That night, my son was lying in a hospital bed.

A woman I didn't know had risked her life protecting him.

And a dead man had just walked back into my world.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

Marco looked at Leo.

Then at Elena.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Regret.

"You don't know what happened tonight, do you?"

My eyes narrowed.

"I know someone attacked my son."

Marco shook his head.

"No."

The room became colder.

"Someone tried to warn you."

I stepped closer.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Marco looked at Elena.

That was the moment I noticed something.

She looked at him differently.

Not like a stranger.

Like someone she knew.

My entire body went still.

I turned toward her.

"You know him."

Elena didn't answer.

That was enough.

I had spent years reading people.

A hesitation.

A glance.

A change in breathing.

Those small things told the truth before words ever did.

And Elena had just told me everything without saying anything.

"You lied to me."

Her face tightened.

"I didn't lie."

"You never told me you knew him."

"Because I knew you would never listen."

My anger rose.

"Try me."

Elena looked at Leo.

Then back at me.

"When your son was attacked, he wasn't the target."

The words hit the room like a gunshot.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Marco stepped forward.

"Damian, your son was used as a message."

I felt my hands tighten.

"Who?"

Neither of them answered.

That scared me more than anything.

Because people who feared death still talked.

But people who feared something worse stayed silent.

I looked at the monitor beside Leo.

The steady beeping reminded me that my son was alive.

But barely.

"Start talking."

Marco took a slow breath.

"Six months ago, someone inside your organization started selling information."

I didn't react.

But inside, something broke.

Betrayal was the one thing I hated more than enemies.

Enemies were honest.

They showed you their faces.

Traitors smiled while they destroyed you.

"Who?"

Marco looked at me.

"You won't believe me."

"Say it."

His eyes moved toward Elena.

"Your brother."

The room went silent.

My brother.

Antonio Costa.

The man who had stood beside me for twenty years.

The man who had attended every family meeting.

The man who had held Leo when he was born.

Impossible.

My brain rejected it immediately.

"No."

Marco didn't blink.

"He knows everything about your business. Your security. Your schedules."

"No."

"He knew exactly when your son would be at the hospital."

My jaw tightened.

"Why would he do that?"

Marco looked at Leo.

"Because your son wasn't supposed to survive."

A wave of rage moved through me.

My men stepped closer.

They knew that look.

The look that came before destruction.

But Elena suddenly spoke.

"That's why I stayed."

I turned toward her.

"What?"

She looked exhausted.

But she didn't look away.

"I knew they would come back."

The room went quiet again.

"How?"

She hesitated.

Then reached into the pocket of her cleaning uniform.

She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

The edges were worn.

Like she had carried it for a long time.

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

There was a message written by hand.

A warning.

A name.

And a date.

The date was tonight.

My eyes moved across the paper.

Then stopped.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

It belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had access to my home.

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who knew Leo's favorite places.

My breathing changed.

Elena watched my reaction.

"You understand now."

I looked at her.

"Where did you get this?"

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"My husband gave it to me."

Marco looked down.

I noticed.

And that told me everything.

"Your husband?"

Elena nodded.

"He was one of your security men."

I stared at her.

The memories came back.

A quiet man.

A loyal employee.

Someone who had protected my family for years.

"What happened to him?"

Elena looked away.

"They killed him."

Nobody spoke.

The hospital room suddenly felt smaller.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

A bitter smile appeared on her face.

"Because the people who killed him worked for you."

That sentence stayed in the air.

Because if it was true...

Then the enemy wasn't outside my walls.

It was already inside.

I looked at Elena differently now.

Not as a stranger.

Not as a cleaning lady.

But as someone who had been carrying a secret that could get her killed.

"Why protect my son?"

Her eyes softened.

"Because your son reminded me of mine."

I froze.

"What happened to your child?"

She looked at Leo.

"My son died because nobody came when he needed help."

For the first time that night, I saw something behind her courage.

Pain.

A wound that never healed.

She wasn't protecting Leo because of money.

Or fear.

Or because she wanted something from me.

She was protecting him because she couldn't save someone else.

Before I could respond, Leo moved again.

His eyes opened slightly.

"Elena..."

She immediately moved closer.

"I'm here."

My son looked at her.

"They told me..."

His voice was weak.

I leaned closer.

"What did they tell you, Leo?"

His small hand grabbed Elena's sleeve.

"They said..."

He struggled to breathe.

"They said Dad would never find out the truth."

My blood turned cold.

"Who said that?"

Leo's eyes moved toward the doorway.

Fear appeared on his face.

Not the fear of a child waking from a nightmare.

The fear of a child recognizing someone dangerous.

I turned slowly.

The hospital corridor outside was empty.

But someone had been standing there.

I could feel it.

My men immediately moved.

One of them checked the hallway.

"Boss."

His voice changed.

That was unusual.

"What?"

He looked down.

There was a phone on the floor outside the room.

A brand-new phone.

No owner.

No fingerprints.

Only one message displayed on the screen.

I picked it up.

And read the words.

My heart stopped.

Because the message wasn't a threat.

It was a photograph.

A photograph taken inside my house.

May you like

Taken only minutes ago.

And in the picture was someone standing beside my bedroom door...
