Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Stood Between Death and My Son

A young woman pressed her injured hand against a hospital bed, whispering:

"Please wake up, little one..."

When mafia boss Damian Costa arrived, he found a blood-stained cleaning badge beside his son's bed.

But three words were scratched onto the back:

"Protect him. Always."

Damian suddenly realized this wasn't an attack.

The first thing I saw when I entered that emergency room was blood.

Not the kind I was used to seeing.

Not the blood from rival families, street wars, or the consequences of the empire I had built with my own hands.

This was different.

This was my son's blood.

And at that moment, every rule I had ever followed disappeared.

My name was Damian Costa.

For twenty-five years, people had known my name before they knew my face.

Some whispered it in fear.

Some cursed it.

Some respected it.

But none of them mattered to me.

Not anymore.

Because at 3:07 in the morning, inside St. Vincent Medical Center, I was no longer the man who controlled half the city.

I was just a father who was terrified.

The elevator doors opened.

My shoes hit the hospital floor.

Every nurse stopped moving.

Every doctor looked up.

My men followed behind me in silence, dressed in black suits, their expressions cold and unreadable.

Usually, when people saw me walk into a room, they knew something bad was about to happen.

Tonight was no different.

Except this time, I wasn't looking for someone to punish.

I was looking for someone who had hurt my son.

"Where is he?" I demanded.

The head nurse immediately pointed toward the emergency room.

"Mr. Costa, your son is stable, but—"

I didn't let her finish.

I pushed through the doors.

And then I saw him.

Leo.

My seven-year-old son.

My entire world.

He was lying on a hospital bed, his small body covered by a white blanket.

A heart monitor beeped beside him.

An IV line ran into his tiny arm.

His face looked too pale.

Too quiet.

I had faced men with guns pointed at my head.

I had survived betrayals from people I trusted.

I had watched enemies beg for mercy.

But nothing had prepared me for seeing my son unconscious.

My fists tightened.

"Who did this?"

Nobody answered.

The silence was worse than any confession.

Then I noticed someone else in the room.

A woman.

She was sitting beside Leo.

Not a doctor.

Not a nurse.

A cleaning lady.

She wore a light blue hospital uniform.

Her blonde hair was tied back messily.

There were scratches on her arms.

Blood stained the sleeve of her uniform.

But she wasn't afraid.

She was holding my son's hand.

My anger immediately returned.

"Who are you?"

The woman slowly looked up.

Her eyes were exhausted.

But there was something else there.

Courage.

"My name is Elena."

My men stepped forward.

I raised my hand.

They stopped.

I walked closer.

"Why were you touching my son?"

Her expression changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

"Because nobody else was."

The words hit harder than I expected.

I looked at Leo.

Then back at her.

"What does that mean?"

Elena swallowed.

Her voice shook.

"When the attackers came, everyone ran."

The room became silent.

"The nurses were helping another patient. The guards were outside. Your son was alone."

My jaw tightened.

"Attackers?"

She nodded slowly.

"He was scared."

She looked at Leo.

"And he called for his father."

For a second, I couldn't breathe.

Because I wasn't there.

I should have been.

I was always prepared for enemies.

Always prepared for threats.

But I had failed to protect the one person who mattered.

My eyes moved toward Elena.

"You stayed with him?"

She looked down at her injured hands.

"I couldn't leave him."

"Why?"

She looked at me like the answer was obvious.

"Because he was a child."

Nobody had ever spoken to me like that.

Nobody had ever looked at me and forgotten who I was.

But Elena did.

She didn't see Damian Costa.

She saw a scared father.

One of my men picked something up from the floor.

"Boss."

He handed me a small plastic badge.

It was Elena's cleaning badge.

The name was almost scratched away.

I turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

Three simple words.

Protect him. Always.

My eyes narrowed.

"Who wrote this?"

Elena froze.

For the first time, I saw fear on her face.

Real fear.

Not because of me.

Because of the question.

"I..."

She stopped.

The heart monitor suddenly changed rhythm.

Everyone turned toward Leo.

His fingers moved.

"Doctor!" the nurse shouted.

I rushed to the bed.

"Leo?"

His eyes slowly opened.

Barely.

But before he looked at me...

He looked at Elena.

Like he was searching for the person who had saved him.

And then my son whispered something that made the entire room freeze.

"She knows why they came for me..."

Elena's face went completely pale.

May you like

And then the hospital room door opened behind us.

A man I thought was dead walked inside.
