Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Locked House

A woman stood inside the dark hallway, holding Clara’s old family photograph: "I was waiting for you to come home."
Alessandro Moretti arrived at the Whitlock mansion and discovered the front door had been opened from the inside.
On the floor was Richard Whitlock’s missing journal.
But one page had been torn out.
The page containing the name of the person who betrayed him.
The first sound Clara heard was the alarm.
Not the kind of alarm from a normal house.
A warning.
A signal.
Something designed for people who expected danger.
The lounge that had felt untouchable only seconds earlier suddenly became a place of uncertainty.
Alessandro moved immediately.
"Everyone stay where you are."
His voice cut through the darkness.
Clara barely saw him, but she felt his hand reach for hers.
Not grabbing.
Not controlling.
Protecting.
She hated that she needed protection.
But after everything that happened that night, she couldn't pretend she was still the same woman who had quietly accepted every unfair thing thrown at her.
The lights returned.
The room looked different.
The same expensive furniture.
The same golden walls.
But the fear on everyone's faces changed the atmosphere completely.
Richard stood frozen.
His eyes remained fixed on the message.
She's already inside the house.
Clara looked at him.
"Who is inside?"
Richard didn't answer.
"Father."
He finally looked at her.
And Clara saw something she had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for her.
"Your father's house was never just a home," Richard said quietly.
Clara frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard looked toward the elevator.
"It means someone has been watching that house for years."
Margaret suddenly spoke.
"Richard, stop."
Everyone turned.
Her voice was sharp.
Desperate.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Richard looked at her.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
"No."
Margaret stepped closer.
"You are destroying the only thing keeping Clara alive."
The sentence made Clara's stomach tighten.
"What are you talking about?"
Nobody answered.
And once again, Clara felt like she was standing in the middle of a conversation everyone understood except her.
Alessandro noticed.
He always noticed.
"Enough."
He looked at Richard.
"Start from the beginning."
Richard hesitated.
Then he nodded.
"Three years ago, I discovered someone inside my company was stealing from me."
He walked toward the table.
"The money was only the beginning."
Daniel listened carefully.
"They weren't trying to steal my business."
Richard looked at Clara.
"They were trying to erase my family."
Clara felt cold.
"Why?"
Richard reached into his pocket and removed an old key.
Small.
Metal.
Worn from years of use.
"This belonged to your grandfather."
Clara stared.
"My grandfather?"
Richard nodded.
"He created a hidden archive before he died."
Alessandro looked interested.
"An archive?"
"Documents. Records. Information about everyone who worked with our family."
Richard placed the key on the table.
"The person who betrayed me was afraid of what was inside."
Clara looked at the key.
"And you hid it?"
"I tried."
Richard's voice became heavier.
"But someone found out."
Margaret crossed her arms.
"You don't want her involved in this."
Clara turned toward her.
"Why do you care now?"
Margaret looked hurt.
For a second, Clara almost believed it.
Almost.
Then she remembered everything.
The lies.
The inheritance.
The lounge.
The one hundred dollars.
"I spent three years thinking I had nothing."
Her voice shook.
"Because you wanted me to believe that."
Margaret looked away.
"I was trying to protect you."
Clara laughed softly.
"Protection doesn't feel like prison."
Nobody spoke.
Even Margaret had no answer.
Alessandro looked at Clara.
Then at Margaret.
"You should have considered that before bringing her here."
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
"You think you understand everything because she looked at you and said no?"
Alessandro didn't react.
"No."
A pause.
"I understand because I watched you treat a human being like a transaction."
Margaret looked away.
Richard opened the old journal he had brought.
Inside were dozens of notes.
Names.
Addresses.
Dates.
Then he stopped.
Clara noticed.
"What?"
Richard didn't answer.
His finger rested on one page.
A page with her name.
CLARA WHITLOCK.
She stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Richard slowly closed the journal.
"It says the person who wanted your inheritance wasn't a stranger."
Clara felt her heart sink.
"Who?"
Richard looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Clara understood.
"Daniel knew?"
The older attorney sighed.
"I knew something was wrong."
"Something?"
Clara's voice became sharper.
"You handled my father's estate."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I was threatened."
The room became quiet.
"By who?"
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
Then stopped himself.
Alessandro noticed.
"You are leaving something out."
Daniel swallowed.
"Because I was afraid."
Clara stared.
"Afraid of Margaret?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
That answer made everyone uncomfortable.
"Then who?"
Before Daniel could respond, the security system suddenly beeped.
One of Alessandro's men looked at his tablet.
"Boss."
Alessandro turned.
"What?"
"The cameras at the Whitlock residence are offline."
Richard immediately stood.
"No."
The word came out like a warning.
Clara looked at him.
"What?"
Richard grabbed the key from the table.
"We need to go."
Alessandro studied him.
"Why?"
Richard looked at Clara.
"Because if someone entered that house, they weren't looking for money."
"Then what were they looking for?"
Richard's expression changed.
"They were looking for the one thing I hid there."
Clara felt a chill.
"What thing?"
Richard didn't answer.
He walked toward the elevator.
Alessandro stopped him.
"You're not going anywhere alone."
Richard looked at him.
"Why do you care?"
Alessandro looked at Clara.
The answer was simple.
"Because she does."
Clara looked away.
She wasn't ready to admit it.
But after everything that happened, Alessandro was the first person who had chosen her without wanting something from her.
They left the lounge together.
The drive to the Whitlock mansion felt endless.
Clara sat beside the window.
Watching the city lights pass.
She thought about her father.
About the years she spent believing he abandoned her.
Now she knew he had been fighting something.
But she still didn't know why he left her behind.
When they arrived, the mansion looked exactly the same.
Too quiet.
The front gate was open.
That was wrong.
Richard immediately noticed.
"Nobody touches anything."
They stepped inside.
The house was dark.
The furniture was untouched.
No signs of a struggle.
Almost too perfect.
Then Clara saw something on the floor.
A photograph.
She picked it up.
Her hands froze.
It was a picture of her as a child.
Standing beside her father.
But someone had written something on the back.
Four words.
She knows the truth.
Clara looked at Richard.
"What does this mean?"
Richard didn't answer.
Because he was staring at the staircase.
A place Clara had never thought about before.
The old locked room upstairs.
The room Margaret always told her never to enter.
Alessandro noticed his reaction.
"What is upstairs?"
Richard whispered:
"The reason I disappeared."
Nobody moved.
Then they heard it.
A sound.
From above.
A slow footstep.
Someone was walking.
Clara looked toward the staircase.
Alessandro stepped in front of her.
May you like
Richard reached for the old key.
And the locked door at the top of the stairs slowly began to open from the inside...
