Chapter 3 - The Father Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

A man stepped out of the elevator, holding an old photograph: "Clara... I know what Margaret did to you."

Alessandro Moretti looked at the stranger and recognized the same family ring hidden inside the man's pocket.

Three years after his funeral, Clara's father had returned.

But he was not the only person who had been hiding the truth.

Clara couldn't move.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The man standing in front of her looked older.

His hair had more gray.

His face carried exhaustion that hadn't been there before.

But there was no mistake.

She knew him.

She had spent years staring at photographs because those were the only pieces of him she had left.

Her father.

Richard Whitlock.

The man everyone told her was gone.

The man whose funeral she attended.

The man whose death changed her entire life.

"That's impossible," Clara whispered.

Richard looked at her with tears forming in his eyes.

"I know."

His voice broke.

"I know what you must be thinking."

Clara stepped backward.

"No."

She shook her head.

"No, you died."

The words hurt even saying them.

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I was supposed to."

Nobody spoke.

Even Margaret looked different.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect mask she wore for years had cracked.

Alessandro noticed immediately.

He had seen powerful people lie.

He had seen criminals pretend.

But Margaret wasn't pretending anymore.

She was terrified.

"Someone explain," Alessandro said.

His voice was calm.

But there was danger beneath it.

Richard looked at him.

"You're Alessandro Moretti."

"Yes."

Richard nodded slowly.

"Then you already know this is bigger than Clara's inheritance."

Clara looked between them.

"How do you know each other?"

Nobody answered immediately.

That scared her more.

Because silence always meant there was another secret.

Alessandro walked closer.

"Three years ago, your father contacted one of my people."

Clara looked at him.

"Why?"

Richard answered.

"Because I knew someone was trying to destroy my daughter's life."

Clara felt a painful pressure in her chest.

"Then why did you leave me?"

Richard closed his eyes.

The question clearly hurt him.

"I didn't."

She stared at him.

"What?"

"I never chose to disappear."

Margaret suddenly spoke.

"Richard, stop."

Everyone turned.

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Richard looked at her.

"You had three years to tell her the truth."

Margaret's face hardened.

"You have no idea what I did to keep this family together."

Clara laughed quietly.

It wasn't happiness.

It was disbelief.

"Keep this family together?"

She looked at Margaret.

"You took my inheritance."

Margaret said nothing.

"You lied about my father."

Silence.

"You brought me here to sell me."

The last sentence made the room colder.

Richard looked at Margaret with a pain Clara had never seen before.

"I trusted you."

Margaret looked away.

"You were weak."

Richard's expression changed.

"What?"

"You were always too sentimental. You thought love could protect Clara."

Margaret stepped forward.

"But love doesn't win."

She looked at Alessandro.

"Power does."

Alessandro watched her carefully.

"That is what you believe?"

Margaret smiled.

"You wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

The room went quiet.

Margaret looked at Clara.

"Your father left you a fortune, but he also left enemies."

Clara frowned.

"What enemies?"

Margaret didn't answer.

Richard did.

"The kind of enemies who don't care about money."

He looked at Clara.

"The property wasn't the only thing I left you."

Clara held the envelope tighter.

"What else?"

Richard looked toward the document Daniel had found.

"A name."

The word made everyone uncomfortable.

"A name of someone who helped destroy my company."

Clara felt confused.

"My father’s company failed because of that?"

Richard nodded.

"I discovered someone inside my own circle was moving money, changing documents, and preparing to take everything."

"Who?"

Richard looked at Margaret.

Then away.

"I didn't know at first."

Clara noticed something.

He wasn't looking at Margaret because he believed she was guilty.

He was looking because he was disappointed.

Margaret noticed too.

"You still don't know the whole story."

Richard looked at her.

"Then tell it."

Margaret smiled faintly.

"I was protecting Clara."

Clara almost laughed.

"By selling me?"

Margaret ignored her.

"Your father doesn't understand what happened after he disappeared."

The word made Clara freeze.

"After he disappeared?"

Margaret continued.

"People came looking for him."

Richard's expression became serious.

"They weren't supposed to find out I was alive."

Clara stared.

"Why?"

Richard looked at Alessandro.

"Because someone wanted me dead."

A cold silence filled the room.

Alessandro's expression changed slightly.

Now he understood.

This was not an inheritance dispute.

It was a survival story.

Clara looked at her father.

"Why didn't you come back for me?"

Richard looked broken.

"Because every time I tried, someone stopped me."

"Who?"

Richard reached into his coat.

He removed a small black notebook.

Old.

Worn.

He handed it to Clara.

"I wrote everything down."

She opened it.

Pages filled with names.

Dates.

Payments.

Locations.

Then she saw something.

A name she recognized.

Margaret.

But beside the name was something else.

A date.

The day her father supposedly died.

Clara looked up.

"Margaret was involved?"

Margaret's face became pale.

"No."

Nobody believed her.

Clara looked at Richard.

"Tell me."

Richard took a breath.

"Margaret knew the truth about my disappearance."

Clara felt betrayed all over again.

"She knew you were alive?"

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

Clara turned toward Margaret.

"You let me believe he was dead."

Margaret's eyes filled with anger.

"You don't understand what I was trying to do."

"No."

Clara's voice shook.

"I understand perfectly."

For the first time, Margaret looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just someone who had been caught.

Alessandro stepped closer to Clara.

"Are you okay?"

She almost answered yes.

It was what she always did.

Pretend.

But she stopped.

"No."

The honesty surprised even herself.

Alessandro nodded.

"Good."

Clara looked at him.

"Good?"

"Because people who admit they are hurt can finally see who caused it."

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Again.

Clara noticed.

"Another message?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Alessandro took the phone.

The message was from an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

You found Richard. Now you will find out why he was allowed to live.

Alessandro's eyes became cold.

"Who sent this?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

Richard suddenly looked frightened.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Clara noticed.

"You know who it is."

Richard didn't answer.

"Father."

He looked at her.

And whispered:

"The person behind all of this is someone you've known your entire life."

Clara felt the room spinning.

"Who?"

Richard looked toward the private elevator.

Then toward Margaret.

Then at Clara.

Before he could answer, every light in the lounge suddenly turned off.

The room fell into darkness.

Someone screamed outside.

A security alarm started.

Alessandro immediately moved in front of Clara.

Then a single phone screen lit up across the room.

A new message appeared.

Richard saw it.

And his face lost all color.

May you like

Because the message contained only four words:

She's already inside the house.
