Chapter 2 - The Man Who Refused to Own Her

The elevator doors opened slowly.

Clara expected another stranger.

Another powerful man.

Another person who would look at her like she was something to be traded.

But the person standing there made her forget how to breathe.

"Clara?"

Her fingers tightened around her handbag.

Because she knew that voice.

She had heard it years ago.

Before her life changed.

Before her father died.

Before Margaret took control of everything.

"Mr. Daniel Whitlock."

Alessandro Moretti's assistant stepped aside as an older man entered the lounge.

Clara stared at him.

The last time she saw Daniel Whitlock, he was standing beside her father's hospital bed.

He was her father's attorney.

The man who handled the estate.

The man who disappeared after the funeral.

"What are you doing here?" Clara whispered.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Almost guilty.

His eyes moved toward Margaret.

And Clara immediately understood.

He wasn't surprised to see Margaret.

He was afraid of her.

Margaret recovered quickly.

"Daniel, this is not the time."

Alessandro turned his head.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

But everyone listened.

"This is exactly the time."

The room became silent.

Alessandro walked toward the table, picking up the document he had found.

"Someone explain why a woman who owns valuable property was brought here and offered for one hundred dollars."

Margaret forced a smile.

"You misunderstand the situation."

Alessandro looked at her.

"I don't think I do."

The way he said it made Clara realize something.

This man didn't need to raise his voice.

He didn't need to threaten anyone.

People simply knew when he was serious.

Daniel slowly removed his glasses.

"Mr. Moretti, perhaps we should speak privately."

"No."

Alessandro looked at Clara.

"She stays."

Clara froze.

Nobody had protected her before.

Not when Margaret insulted her.

Not when people whispered about her.

Not when she worked until her feet hurt because she had nowhere else to go.

But this stranger was standing between her and the people who had controlled her entire life.

Margaret crossed her arms.

"This is ridiculous. Clara is emotional and confused. She found some papers and convinced herself she owns something."

Clara looked at her.

"You knew about the property."

Margaret's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Clara saw it.

"I knew your father had investments."

"You knew he left them to me."

Margaret stepped closer.

"Be careful."

The warning was familiar.

The same voice.

The same cold expression.

The same woman who had spent years making Clara doubt herself.

But this time, Clara wasn't standing alone.

Alessandro noticed.

"How long did you know about her inheritance?"

Margaret looked away.

"That is a family matter."

"No."

Alessandro placed the document down.

"That became my matter when you tried to sell her."

The word hit the room.

Sell.

Clara hated hearing it.

Because it was true.

Margaret had dressed it up.

Called it an opportunity.

Called it a solution.

But that was exactly what she had done.

She had brought Clara here like an item.

Daniel sighed.

"I should have stopped this earlier."

Everyone looked at him.

Clara felt her heart tighten.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at her.

"I tried to contact you after your father's death."

Margaret immediately interrupted.

"Daniel."

But he continued.

"Your father left specific instructions."

Clara stepped forward.

"What instructions?"

Daniel reached into his briefcase.

He removed a small envelope.

Old.

Sealed.

With her name written across the front.

CLARA WHITLOCK.

Her hands shook.

"My father wrote that?"

Daniel nodded.

"He told me if Margaret ever attempted to control your inheritance, I was supposed to give this to you."

Margaret went pale.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel held the envelope tighter.

"You knew about this?"

Margaret said nothing.

And that silence answered everything.

Clara couldn't move.

Her father had known.

He knew Margaret might try something.

He had prepared for it.

All these years, Clara believed her father had left her alone.

But maybe he hadn't.

Maybe he had been protecting her.

Daniel handed her the envelope.

"Your father loved you very much."

Clara looked down.

Her name was written in his handwriting.

The same handwriting she remembered from birthday cards.

For a moment, the room disappeared.

She almost opened it.

Almost.

Then Alessandro spoke.

"Not here."

Clara looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because whatever is inside that letter changes everything."

His eyes moved toward Margaret.

"And some people in this room already know that."

Margaret immediately looked away.

Clara felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Alessandro didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Daniel.

"What else was hidden?"

Daniel hesitated.

Too long.

Clara noticed.

"What else?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"There was another document."

Margaret's face changed.

"Daniel."

"No."

Daniel's voice became firmer.

"She deserves the truth."

He looked at Clara.

"Your father discovered someone had been changing records connected to his estate."

Clara felt her stomach drop.

"Changing records?"

Daniel nodded.

"Before he died, he believed someone was trying to take everything from you."

Margaret laughed nervously.

"That is absurd."

Alessandro looked at her.

"Is it?"

Nobody answered.

Clara looked around the room.

The security guards.

The expensive furniture.

The people who seemed powerful.

And suddenly she realized something.

Everyone knew something except her.

Her whole life had been built around secrets.

Her father's death.

Her inheritance.

Margaret's actions.

Even this meeting.

She looked at Alessandro.

"Why did you agree to meet Margaret?"

The question surprised everyone.

Especially him.

Alessandro studied her.

"Because Margaret came to me with an offer."

Clara's face changed.

"What offer?"

Margaret stepped forward.

"Clara—"

"Let him answer."

Alessandro looked at Margaret.

Then back at Clara.

"She told me she could give me access to your father's property."

Clara felt betrayed.

"She was selling my land."

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Cold.

Honest.

"And she believed you would never find out."

Clara looked at Margaret.

For years, she had wondered why Margaret hated her.

Why she always made Clara feel small.

Now she understood.

It was never about Clara.

It was about what Clara owned.

Alessandro picked up the one hundred dollar bill from the table.

He folded it once.

Then placed it into his jacket pocket.

Clara looked confused.

"What are you doing?"

"Keeping evidence."

"Evidence of what?"

His eyes became serious.

"That your stepmother tried to sell something that was never hers."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"You think you can walk in here and take control?"

Alessandro looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"I think Clara can."

Those words affected Clara more than she expected.

Because nobody had ever told her she could control her own life.

Margaret smiled.

A dangerous smile.

"You don't know what you're protecting."

Alessandro watched her carefully.

"Then tell me."

Margaret said nothing.

The silence became uncomfortable.

Then her phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

For the first time all night, genuine fear appeared on her face.

Clara noticed.

"Who is it?"

Margaret quickly locked the phone.

"No one."

Alessandro extended his hand.

"Give me the phone."

Margaret laughed.

"You cannot order me around."

Alessandro didn't move.

But two security men quietly stepped forward.

Margaret's confidence disappeared.

Slowly, she handed over the phone.

Alessandro looked at the message.

His expression changed.

Clara watched him.

"What does it say?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he turned the screen toward Daniel.

Daniel read it.

And his face became completely pale.

Clara stepped closer.

"Tell me."

Daniel looked at her.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"It says your father’s will was never the only thing they hid."

Clara felt cold.

Alessandro looked toward the private elevator.

The same elevator that had brought Daniel into the room.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His assistant's voice came through.

"Boss, we found the person who created the fake documents."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

A pause.

Then the assistant answered.

"At the Whitlock house."

Clara stopped breathing.

Because the house had been empty all night.

Nobody was supposed to be there.

Alessandro grabbed his coat.

But before he reached the door, Daniel received another message.

He looked at the screen.

And whispered one name.

"Your father."

Clara turned around.

May you like

The elevator doors behind them began opening again.

And the man standing inside was someone who should have been dead for three years.
