Chapter 6 - The Man Who Took The Fall For Her

“Don’t pick up.”
The voice behind Elena was calm.
Too calm.
She turned slowly.
Marcus stood near the entrance.
Alive.
Again.
But this time, he looked different.
Not like a man who had returned from hiding.
Like a man who had been running.
His clothes were wrinkled.
His face was exhausted.
And his eyes were fixed on the phone in Adrian’s hand.
Nobody spoke.
The entire penthouse seemed to hold its breath.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“You were supposed to be gone.”
Marcus gave a tired smile.
“I was.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then why are you here?”
Marcus looked at his daughter.
And for the first time, Elena saw something she had been waiting six years to see.
Regret.
“I came back because they found you.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
He looked at Adrian instead.
“Did you tell her?”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“No.”
“Good.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No?”
Her voice cut through the room.
“You think that’s good?”
Everyone turned toward her.
“You all keep deciding what I can handle.”
She pointed at the phone.
“My father.”
Then at Adrian.
“You.”
Then at Clara.
“My mother.”
“You all know something about my life, and somehow I’m the last person allowed to know.”
Nobody interrupted.
Because she was right.
Elena looked at Marcus.
“Tell me.”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Elena…”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I am done hearing my name followed by an apology.”
The room went quiet.
“I want answers.”
Marcus looked older in that moment.
Not because of his age.
Because of the weight he carried.
“Six years ago, I discovered a network of people who controlled powerful companies, politicians, and criminal organizations.”
Elena frowned.
“You keep talking about this list.”
“Yes.”
“What was on it?”
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“People who couldn’t afford to have their secrets exposed.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“And you found them?”
“Yes.”
“And they came after you.”
“Yes.”
She stared.
“Then why didn’t you just run?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Because they didn’t want me.”
A pause.
“They wanted you.”
The words landed like a physical blow.
Elena felt the room shift.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My life was normal.”
Marcus looked at her sadly.
“That’s what I wanted you to believe.”
She laughed quietly.
“Normal?”
She looked around the penthouse.
“At what point did my life become a secret operation?”
Nobody answered.
Marcus walked toward the table.
He picked up the old photograph.
The one showing Elena as a child.
“You were eight years old when they first noticed you.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“They thought you had something.”
“What could I possibly have?”
Marcus looked at the key.
“The location.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“The location of what?”
“The evidence.”
A silence followed.
Then Elena looked at Adrian.
“And you knew?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Her expression changed.
“You knew.”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
The pain in her face was immediate.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
“You knew all this time?”
“I knew your father was hiding something.”
“But not what?”
“No.”
“Then why protect me?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Because I promised him.”
Elena’s voice became quieter.
“Why?”
Adrian looked away.
Because the answer was difficult.
Because the truth was worse.
“Because I was the reason he disappeared.”
Nobody moved.
Elena stared.
“What?”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Adrian continued.
“Six years ago, your father tried to expose the people behind the list.”
He paused.
“I tried to help him.”
Elena waited.
“And?”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“And someone leaked our location.”
Marcus looked down.
“I was supposed to meet Adrian that night.”
Elena looked between them.
“You were together?”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
Adrian’s voice became lower.
“Then everything went wrong.”
A memory crossed his face.
Something painful.
Something he had buried.
“Your father realized someone close to him had betrayed him.”
Elena whispered:
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Then Clara spoke.
“It was someone we trusted.”
Everyone turned.
Clara stood near the doorway.
Her hands were shaking.
“Someone inside the family.”
Elena looked at her.
“What family?”
Clara didn’t respond.
And again, Elena felt that familiar anger.
The feeling of being the only person outside the truth.
She walked toward her mother.
“You knew.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“You knew my father was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Adrian knew him.”
“Yes.”
“You knew everything.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I knew enough to be afraid.”
That stopped Elena.
Because Clara didn’t look like someone hiding a secret.
She looked like someone who had survived one.
Suddenly, the phone in Adrian’s hand vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Ask Marcus why he really came back.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Marcus saw it.
“What did it say?”
Adrian turned the phone around.
Marcus went pale.
“No.”
Elena noticed.
“You know who sent it.”
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Who?”
He stepped back.
“Someone who should never know we’re here.”
The lights flickered again.
Everyone froze.
Not because the power was failing.
Because they knew.
Someone was inside.
Adrian immediately moved.
“Stay close.”
Elena almost laughed.
“Really?”
She looked at the armed men.
“At this point, I think staying close to you is what gets people hurt.”
The words hit him.
But he didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
A sound came from the hallway.
A slow step.
Then another.
Someone was walking toward them.
The bodyguards raised their weapons.
Adrian stood in front of Elena.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared beneath the doorway.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Adrian.”
His face changed.
Elena saw it.
The recognition.
The shock.
The fear.
Because whoever was outside wasn’t an enemy.
It was someone from his past.
Someone he thought was gone.
The door handle slowly moved.

And Adrian whispered one name.
“Vincent…”
