Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The door opened.

Nobody moved.

The woman standing outside looked nothing like the ghost Elena had imagined.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She wasn’t an enemy.

She was someone Elena had spent years mourning.

Her mother.

Clara Renner.

Elena stared.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The woman standing there was older.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face carried years of exhaustion.

But it was her.

The same eyes.

The same expression Elena remembered from childhood.

The same eyes that used to look at her before bedtime and promise that everything would be okay.

Elena whispered one word.

“Mom?”

The woman’s lips trembled.

“Elena.”

That voice broke something inside her.

For six years, Elena had carried a photograph of her mother in a drawer.

For six years, she had believed that photograph was all she had left.

Now the person in the photograph was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Breathing.

Watching her.

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

Clara’s expression changed.

Pain.

“I know.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“You’re not real.”

“I am.”

“You died.”

The words came out harder than she intended.

But she needed to say them.

She needed someone to explain how the entire world had suddenly changed.

Clara lowered her eyes.

“I know what your father told you.”

“My father told me the truth.”

Silence.

That sentence hit harder than Elena expected.

Because everyone in the room knew it wasn’t true.

Everyone except her.

Adrian slowly moved between Elena and the doorway.

Not to protect himself.

To protect her.

Clara looked at him.

“You kept your promise.”

Adrian’s expression remained unreadable.

“I tried.”

“No.”

Clara looked at Elena.

“You failed.”

Elena looked between them.

“You know each other too?”

Nobody answered.

Her frustration finally exploded.

“Does anyone in this room not know a secret about my life?”

The silence was painful.

Because the answer was obvious.

No one.

Elena laughed softly.

Not because she was amused.

Because she was overwhelmed.

“My father was alive.”

“My mother was alive.”

“The man upstairs knew both of you.”

She looked at Adrian.

“And somehow I was the only person who didn’t know anything.”

Adrian looked away.

That hurt more than an argument.

Because he wasn’t denying it.

Clara stepped forward.

“Elena, I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

Her voice cracked.

“When I was thirty?”

Clara flinched.

Elena immediately regretted the cruelty.

But the pain was too fresh.

“You don’t get to disappear and come back expecting me to understand.”

“I never wanted to leave.”

“Then why did you?”

Clara looked at Adrian.

Then at the key.

Then at the hidden room.

“Because of what your father found.”

Elena shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because it’s the truth.”

“No.”

She pointed toward the room.

“I want the truth about me.”

Clara became silent.

And that scared Elena.

Because the woman who had just walked back from the dead looked afraid.

“My whole life was a lie.”

“No.”

Clara stepped closer.

“Your whole life was protected.”

“That’s the same thing when nobody tells you why.”

Clara looked down.

“You were born into something dangerous.”

Elena stared.

“I was born into a family.”

“No.”

Clara’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“You were born into a war.”

The room went quiet.

Even Adrian looked at her.

Because apparently, he didn’t know everything either.

Elena noticed.

“You didn’t know?”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

“Your father never told you.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew you would try to fix it.”

Adrian gave a cold smile.

“That sounds like him.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“You were friends.”

“Yes.”

“He trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“And he trusted you with my safety.”

Adrian nodded.

“More than once.”

Her chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

The question hung between them.

Adrian had faced armed men.

He had faced enemies.

But Elena’s question seemed to hit harder.

“Because your father asked me not to.”

She stared.

“That’s your excuse?”

“No.”

He looked directly at her.

“It’s my failure.”

The honesty surprised her.

Adrian Vale did not apologize easily.

But he did now.

“I should have told you.”

Elena looked away.

She didn’t know what hurt more.

The lies.

Or the fact that she believed he was sorry.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone.

Everyone turned.

It wasn’t Adrian’s.

It wasn’t Marcus’s.

It wasn’t Clara’s.

It was coming from the hidden room.

Again.

The room nobody was supposed to enter.

Adrian walked toward it.

Clara immediately stopped him.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her face had changed.

“What?”

Clara looked terrified.

“That phone should not be ringing.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

“Because the person who left it there is dead.”

The words froze everyone.

Elena felt her heartbeat slow.

“Who?”

Clara didn’t answer.

She looked at Elena.

And Elena realized something.

Her mother wasn’t afraid of the phone.

She was afraid of the person who would answer it.

Adrian opened the door wider.

The phone continued ringing.

The room inside was empty.

Except for one thing.

A small black notebook on the desk.

Elena recognized it immediately.

The same notebook she had seen in her father’s old belongings.

The one Marcus always said never existed.

Adrian picked it up.

Clara whispered:

“Don’t.”

But he already had.

The phone stopped ringing.

A notification appeared on the notebook’s screen.

A hidden device.

A message.

Everyone watched as Adrian read it.

His face changed.

Elena noticed.

“What does it say?”

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.”

Slowly, he turned the notebook toward her.

There was one sentence.

One name.

A name Elena had never expected.

The message read:

“Your father did not disappear because of the enemy.”

A pause.

Then the second line appeared.

“He disappeared because of Adrian Vale.”

Nobody spoke.

Elena looked at Adrian.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t explain.

And somehow, that was worse.

Clara covered her mouth.

“No…”

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“What did you do?”

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.

Regret.

Then the phone inside the hidden room rang one more time.

Adrian walked toward it.

The screen showed an incoming call.

The name displayed was impossible.

Because it belonged to the one person everyone believed was dead.

Marcus Renner.

Adrian reached for the phone.

And before he answered, a second voice came from behind Elena.

“Don’t pick up.”

May you like

She turned.

The person standing in the doorway was the man whose name was on the screen.
