Chapter 4 - The Woman Hidden Behind The Locked Door

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

The sound echoed through the penthouse hallway, cutting through the silence like a warning.

Elena stood behind Adrian, watching his hand hover near the door handle.

For the first time since she met him, she saw hesitation.

Not fear.

Something deeper.

Recognition.

“You know what’s inside,” Elena whispered.

Adrian didn’t look back.

“I know what might be inside.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

His eyes stayed fixed on the locked room.

“It’s the only honest one.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

The warning in his voice made everyone turn.

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

“You can’t open that door.”

A cold silence followed.

Elena looked between them.

“Why?”

Neither man answered.

Her patience disappeared.

“Why?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because he knew she deserved the truth.

But he also knew the truth could destroy everything.

“That room belonged to someone who was never supposed to come back.”

Elena stared.

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

“It explains enough.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I spent six years believing my father was gone. I spent six years wondering if I did something wrong. I spent six years waiting for a phone call that never came.”

She looked at Marcus.

“And now I find out everyone has been protecting me from a secret I never asked for.”

Her eyes moved to Adrian.

“So no. It is not enough.”

The phone stopped ringing.

The silence afterward was worse.

Then suddenly—

It rang again.

Everyone froze.

Adrian slowly reached for the handle.

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.”

Adrian looked down at his hand.

Then at Marcus.

“You told me to protect her.”

“Yes.”

“Then let me do it.”

Marcus released him.

Elena watched as Adrian opened the door.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The room beyond was dark.

No lights.

No movement.

Only an old wooden desk.

A chair.

And a wall covered with photographs.

Elena stepped closer.

Her breath caught.

Every photograph was of her.

Not recent photographs.

Old ones.

Her as a child.

Her at school.

Her painting in the park.

Her walking home.

Hundreds of moments she never knew anyone had captured.

Her stomach tightened.

“Who took these?”

Nobody answered.

Adrian entered first.

His eyes moved across the room.

Then stopped.

On the desk.

There was a small recording device.

An old one.

With a blinking red light.

Elena followed his gaze.

“What is that?”

Marcus whispered.

“No.”

The fear in his voice made everyone turn.

Adrian picked up the device.

“Marcus.”

“No.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Then explain.”

Marcus said nothing.

That was enough.

Adrian pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

A man’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

Elena immediately recognized it.

Her knees almost gave out.

Her father.

“Adrian…”

The recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this, then something went wrong.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Marcus looked away.

Her father’s voice continued.

“I know you promised to keep her away from this world.”

Adrian became completely still.

“But you failed.”

Elena looked at him.

The words hit harder than anything.

Her father wasn’t speaking to her.

He was speaking to Adrian.

“I’m sorry.”

A pause.

Then:

“She deserves to know the truth.”

Elena stepped closer.

The recording crackled.

“Six years ago, I found out that the people controlling the city weren’t the ones everyone feared.”

A pause.

“They were the ones everyone trusted.”

The room felt smaller.

Elena looked at the photographs.

Her childhood.

Her life.

Observed.

Tracked.

Controlled.

Her father continued.

“The list was never about money.”

Adrian looked at the key.

“It was about names.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Adrian immediately stopped the recording.

“Stay here.”

Elena frowned.

“Absolutely not.”

“This isn’t a discussion.”

“It is if you’re talking to me.”

He looked at her.

For a second, they just stared at each other.

The same woman who had challenged him in bunny slippers.

The same woman who refused to be intimidated.

Finally, Adrian exhaled.

“You are impossible.”

“You noticed.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Almost.

Then the lights flickered.

The entire room went dark.

A second later, emergency lighting came on.

Red.

Low.

The same terrifying glow.

Adrian immediately moved toward the door.

“Everyone stay together.”

A guard looked at the security monitor.

“Boss.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

The guard swallowed.

“The cameras are offline.”

“How long?”

“Three minutes.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Three minutes.

That was enough time.

Someone had entered.

Someone had been inside their security system.

Someone had been inside the penthouse.

Elena looked around.

“Where’s Marcus?”

Everyone froze.

He was gone.

The chair where he had been standing was empty.

The room became silent.

“Marcus!”

Elena rushed toward the hallway.

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“No.”

She turned.

“That’s my father.”

“And someone took him.”

The words stopped her.

Because Adrian was right.

Marcus wouldn’t disappear.

Not after returning.

Not after six years.

Unless he was running from something.

Or someone.

Adrian released her arm.

His voice softened.

“I promise you.”

She looked at him.

“I’ll find him.”

Elena studied his face.

“You made that promise before?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

That told her everything.

A sound suddenly came from the apartment.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

Not the front door.

A smaller sound.

From inside.

Elena looked toward the hidden room.

The recording device was still on the desk.

But something else had changed.

The photographs.

One photograph was missing.

The one showing Elena and her father together.

She slowly walked toward the desk.

Adrian followed.

“What are you doing?”

She picked up the empty frame.

Someone had removed the photo carefully.

Not ripped.

Not stolen randomly.

Removed.

Like they knew exactly which memory mattered.

Behind the frame was a message.

Written directly on the wall.

Three words.

“Ask your mother.”

Elena froze.

Her fingers went cold.

“My mother?”

Marcus had always told her mother died when she was young.

She never questioned it.

Because her father never lied.

Until now.

Adrian saw her expression.

“Elena.”

She turned.

“My mother is dead.”

Nobody answered.

That silence was enough.

Her heart started racing.

“Tell me.”

Adrian looked at the message.

Then at her.

“I don’t know.”

“You know something.”

“Elena—”

“You all know something!”

Her voice broke through the room.

Nobody moved.

Then the recording device suddenly turned on again.

No one touched it.

Static filled the room.

A different voice appeared.

A woman’s voice.

Soft.

Calm.

Familiar.

Elena stopped breathing.

Because she knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From somewhere else.

From every night she had spent as a child.

From every dream she couldn’t explain.

The voice whispered:

“Elena…”

Her eyes widened.

The recording continued.

“I’m sorry I left you.”

A tear fell before she could stop it.

Adrian looked at her.

“Who is that?”

Elena couldn’t answer.

Because the impossible was happening.

The woman on the recording was speaking again.

And this time, she said something that made Adrian’s face lose all color.

“I know Adrian Vale is there with you.”

Everyone froze.

The woman continued.

“Tell him I kept my promise.”

A long pause.

Then:

“And tell my daughter the truth about who her father really was.”

The recording stopped.

No one spoke.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“What did she mean?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because he was staring at the hallway.

At the shadow standing beneath the penthouse door.

A woman’s silhouette.

May you like

Waiting.

Then the door slowly opened from the outside.
