Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Inside Moretti Holdings

Mateo Cruz had buried his father twelve years earlier.
Now Gabriel Cruz stood beside Paul Mercer.
Alive.
Older.
But unmistakable.
Mateo stared at the screen.
Damian looked at him.
“You didn’t know.”
It was not a question.
“No.”
The video ended.
Mateo sat down.
For the first time, Emma saw the powerful man look lost.
“My father died in Mexico.”
“Apparently not,” Damian said.
Isabella whispered, “Gabriel worked for Victor.”
Mateo looked at her.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I couldn’t prove it.”
Mateo stood.
“My entire life was built around that man.”
Damian stepped closer.
“So was mine.”
The two men looked at each other.
No speeches.
No accusations.
Only recognition.
Emma understood something then.
Victor’s greatest weapon was not money.
It was inheritance.
Secrets passed from parents to children until nobody knew which loyalties were real.
“We stop playing his game,” she said.
They looked at her.
“He wants families fighting families. So we give him something he can’t calculate.”
“What?” Damian asked.
“The truth.”
Emma contacted federal prosecutor Lena Ward.
Not Pike.
Not Chicago police.
Ward had investigated financial corruption independently for years.
Emma sent a small sample of the records.
Ward called within ninety seconds.
“Where did you get these?”
“Can you protect witnesses?”
“If they’re authentic.”
“They are.”
“Then yes.”
Emma looked at Damian.
“There’s a problem.”
Ward knew immediately.
“Moretti.”
“Yes.”
“I cannot promise immunity.”
Damian spoke.
“I’m not asking for it.”
Emma turned.
Ward went silent.
Damian continued.
“I’ll testify about anything I personally did.”
“Damian—” Mateo began.
“No.”
Damian looked at Emma.
“This ends tonight.”
Ward gave them instructions.
Copies of everything would be uploaded simultaneously to federal servers and three independent law firms.
Victor could no longer destroy the evidence.
But they still needed Margaret.
And proof linking Victor to the current crimes.
At 11:37 p.m., they returned to the Sterling ballroom.
The chandeliers were still glowing.
Broken glasses from the earlier panic had been cleared.
The room looked beautiful again.
Emma found that offensive.
Victor stood near the stage.
Late sixties.
Silver hair.
Elegant tuxedo.
He looked more like a senator than a criminal.
Margaret sat nearby.
Alive.
Paul Mercer stood behind her.
Gabriel Cruz beside him.
Victor smiled.
“Emma.”
Damian stepped forward.
Victor’s smile widened.
“Anthony’s boy.”
“I’m thirty-six.”
“You were always a boy when it mattered.”
Damian showed no reaction.
Victor looked at Isabella.
“And the ghost.”
Isabella stared at him.
“You killed Daniel.”
“Yes.”
Emma’s heart stopped.
Victor said it casually.
No denial.
No hesitation.
“You killed my father?”
“He became inconvenient.”
Damian moved.
Emma caught his arm.
Victor smiled.
“There. That Moretti temper.”
Emma forced herself to speak.
“You need our authorization.”
“Yes.”
“Release Margaret.”
“When the transfer clears.”
Emma opened her laptop.
“Then we do it together.”
Victor nodded toward Mercer.
He brought the documents.
Emma examined them.
She needed time.
Every minute allowed Ward’s team to position themselves.
Emma pretended to find errors.
Victor became impatient.
11:51.
“Sign.”
“Your routing number is wrong.”
Mercer leaned closer.
“No, it isn’t.”
“It is if you want the money to reach Luxembourg tonight.”
He checked.
Emma had deliberately switched two digits while pretending to correct the form.
Mercer fixed them.
11:55.
Damian watched her.
He knew she was stalling.
Victor did too.
“Enough.”
He pulled a gun.
Mateo stepped forward.
Gabriel raised his own.
Father and son faced each other.
Gabriel said quietly, “Move aside.”
Mateo looked devastated.
“You left me.”
“I survived.”
“You let me bury you.”
“Survival requires sacrifice.”
Mateo glanced at Damian.
“No.”
Gabriel frowned.
“No?”
“You taught me loyalty.”
“I taught you obedience.”
Mateo’s expression hardened.
“I finally learned the difference.”
11:57.
Victor pressed the gun against Margaret’s head.
“Sign.”
Emma signed.
Isabella did too.
Mercer entered the authorization.
The screen displayed:
TRANSFER PROCESSING.
Victor smiled.
Emma did not.
11:59.
Then:
TRANSFER REJECTED.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“What did you do?”
Emma looked at him.
“I’m an accountant.”
Gunfire erupted outside.
Federal agents entered.
Victor grabbed Margaret.
Damian moved.
Gabriel aimed at Mateo.
Then a shot cracked.
Gabriel fell.
Mercer had fired.
Everyone stared.
Mercer lowered the gun.
“I owed Daniel one thing.”
Victor shot Mercer.
Chaos exploded.
Damian tackled Victor.
Emma pulled Margaret away.
Agents surrounded them.
Within seconds, Victor was pinned to the marble floor.
It should have been over.
Then Emma heard Isabella scream.
She turned.
Margaret had collapsed.
A red stain spread across her dress.
“Mom!”
Emma dropped beside her.
Margaret opened her eyes.
“Emma.”
“Stay with me.”
Margaret touched her cheek.
“There’s something I never told you.”
Paramedics rushed forward.
Emma held her hand.
“What?”
Margaret whispered two words.
May you like
“Evelyn lives.”
Then her eyes closed.
