Chapter 11 - The Account Marked E.H.

Emma hit the floor.

Damian covered her.

Mateo’s men moved toward the trees.

“Evelyn!”

Emma crawled inside.

Her mother lay behind the wall.

Alive.

The bullet had missed.

Damian pulled both women away from the windows.

For several minutes, the house filled with shouting.

Then silence.

The shooter escaped.

Evelyn looked at Emma.

Seventeen years of absence stood between them.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Don’t.”

“I need to explain.”

“Not yet.”

Evelyn nodded.

That restraint broke Emma more than tears would have.

They moved to a federal safe location.

There Evelyn told her story.

Daniel had discovered Victor’s network.

They planned to expose it together.

When Daniel was killed, Evelyn believed Emma would be next.

Margaret agreed to raise her.

“You chose her?”

“She was my sister.”

Emma stared.

“Margaret is my aunt?”

“Yes.”

Another secret.

Another piece.

“But she became your mother in every way that mattered,” Evelyn said.

Emma nodded.

That, at least, she knew.

Evelyn had spent seventeen years gathering evidence.

Why not expose it earlier?

“Because Victor owned pieces of everything. Police. Courts. Businesses.”

“And now?”

“Now you found the ledger.”

Emma frowned.

“What changes that?”

“The ledger contains account E.H.”

Emma remembered.

“Your initials.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at Damian.

“Emma Hayes.”

Emma froze.

“The account belongs to me?”

“It was created for you.”

“How much?”

Evelyn answered.

“Two hundred and forty million dollars.”

Emma laughed because the alternative was screaming.

“That’s impossible.”

“It is the consolidated restitution fund.”

“Restitution for whom?”

“Everyone the Moretti organization harmed under Victor.”

Damian went still.

“My father created it.”

“With Daniel.”

Emma understood.

Anthony had been preparing to dismantle the criminal side of the family.

The money was not an inheritance.

It was repayment.

“Then it doesn’t belong to me.”

“You are trustee.”

Emma looked at Damian.

He nodded.

“Then we return it.”

Evelyn smiled through tears.

“You really are Daniel’s daughter.”

The next days changed everything.

Federal indictments expanded.

Pike was arrested.

Gabriel Cruz survived his gunshot wound and agreed to cooperate.

Paul Mercer also survived.

He confessed to helping Victor but provided records proving he had tried, too late, to protect Emma.

Damian gave testimony.

He admitted crimes connected to illegal gambling, extortion, and financial concealment.

Emma sat outside the grand jury room when he emerged.

“What happens?”

“Ward thinks I’ll be charged.”

Her heart tightened.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked calm.

She hated it.

“You don’t get to disappear.”

“I’m not planning to.”

“You’re very good at leaving important information until the last possible moment.”

“So are you.”

She almost smiled.

Then Ward approached.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“Victor’s case.”

“He confessed.”

“Not on record.”

“The ballroom had cameras.”

“They were disabled.”

Emma remembered.

But she had something better.

Her laptop.

She had recorded the transfer session.

Including Victor admitting he killed Daniel.

Ward checked.

The recording existed.

But the audio file had been corrupted.

Emma felt sick.

“Can it be recovered?”

“Maybe.”

Damian looked at her.

“Who had access to your laptop?”

Emma thought.

Only herself.

Damian.

Mateo.

And—

“Mercer.”

Ward nodded.

“We searched his hospital room.”

“What did you find?”

“A second encrypted drive.”

Emma stared.

“What’s on it?”

“We can’t open it.”

Emma took the drive.

At home, she tried every password she could imagine.

Nothing.

Then she remembered something her father taught her.

Numbers rarely lie.

People do.

The drive opened.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Audio.

Video.

Bank records.

And one folder.

EMMA.

She opened it.

A video began.

Daniel Hayes appeared on screen.

Alive.

Young.

Her father looked directly into the camera.

“Emma, if you’re seeing this, then I failed to come home.”

She covered her mouth.

Damian stood behind her.

Daniel continued.

“There is one truth I never told anyone except Paul.”

Emma leaned closer.

“If Victor discovers it, he will destroy everything to keep it hidden.”

Daniel looked off camera.

Then said:

“The person who built the network was not Victor.”

Emma stopped breathing.

“The real architect was—”

The video froze.

Then the screen displayed a second file.

A name.

May you like

Emma clicked it.

And Damian whispered, “That’s impossible.”
