Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Charity

The name was Anthony Moretti.
Damian’s father.
Emma looked at him.
“No.”
Damian’s face hardened.
“Play it.”
The next video showed Daniel speaking with Anthony.
At first, it seemed damning.
Anthony described accounts.
Judges.
Police.
Payments.
Then Daniel asked:
“How long has Victor believed you built it?”
Anthony answered:
“Long enough.”
Emma understood.
“It was a cover.”
Damian leaned closer.
Anthony had deliberately taken responsibility for Victor’s network so he could map every participant.
He built a false hierarchy around himself.
Victor believed Anthony was becoming more powerful.
In reality, Anthony was documenting everyone.
Daniel said, “If you die, people will remember you as the monster.”
Anthony smiled sadly.
“Then Damian gets to live as something else.”
Damian turned away.
Emma watched him.
All his life, he had inherited a reputation his father deliberately created.
Not innocence.
Anthony had committed crimes.
But the worst ones attributed to him had been camouflage.
Daniel continued.
“The evidence needs three keys.”
Emma frowned.
Three trustees.
Evelyn.
Emma.
And Damian.
The Sterling inheritance was not simply money.
It controlled an encrypted archive.
They found the access portal.
Emma entered her authorization.
Evelyn entered hers.
Damian entered his.
The archive opened.
Thousands of documents appeared.
Every corrupt payment.
Every threatened witness.
Every shell company.
Victor’s entire network.
Ward received copies immediately.
The case was no longer dependent on one damaged recording.
Victor was finished.
But one file remained locked.
MERCER.
Emma visited Paul in the hospital.
He looked twenty years older.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know.”
“Some.”
Mercer looked away.
“I betrayed Daniel.”
Emma said nothing.
“Victor threatened my wife.”
“That doesn’t erase what you did.”
“I know.”
“Why save the files?”
“Because guilt is useless unless eventually you do something with it.”
Emma studied him.
“Did you sell my name?”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
“But I also warned Isabella.”
“Why?”
“I realized Victor planned to kill you after the transfer.”
“You waited until then?”
“I was a coward.”
No excuses.
Emma appreciated that more than she wanted to.
“Who shot you?”
“Pike.”
“And you shot Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He was going to kill Mateo.”
Emma stood.
“Give me the password to your folder.”
Mercer looked at her.
“Your father’s favorite sentence.”
Emma knew immediately.
NUMBERS DON’T LIE.
The folder opened.
Inside was one final document.
A list of people still active in Victor’s network.
Most were already under investigation.
One name was shocking.
Valerie Sloan.
Emma stared.
Isabella’s alias.
But the photograph attached was not Isabella.
It was another woman.
The real Valerie Sloan.
Emma called Damian.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
She called Mateo.
“Where is Damian?”
“With his mother.”
Emma’s blood went cold.
“Which mother?”
Silence.
“What?”
“Mateo, Isabella stole Valerie Sloan’s identity.”
“That was part of her cover.”
“No. Valerie Sloan is alive.”
Mateo understood.
Emma ran.
Damian had taken Isabella to Anthony’s old lake property.
Emma and Mateo arrived forty minutes later.
The door stood open.
Inside, Damian sat in a chair.
Blood on his temple.
Alive.
“Where is she?”
He looked furious.
“Gone.”
On the table was a note.
Emma read it.
ANTHONY TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME. NOW I TAKE WHAT HE LEFT YOU.
Below it was an address.
Sterling Foundation headquarters.
And a time.
Midnight.
Damian stood.
“She was never my mother.”
Emma stared.
“What?”
“My mother died seventeen years ago.”
“How do you know?”
Damian held up a necklace.
He had found it inside Isabella’s bag.
His real mother’s necklace.
Stained with dried blood.
“Who is she?”
Damian’s voice became cold.
“My aunt.”
“Victor’s wife?”
“No.”
He looked at Emma.
“Victor’s sister.”
Then Emma’s phone rang.
Evelyn.
Emma answered.
But the voice on the other end belonged to Isabella.
“Bring Damian.”
Emma gripped the phone.
“If you hurt my mother—”
“She isn’t the one you should worry about.”
A pause.
May you like
“Margaret is.”
Then Emma heard her aunt scream.
