Chapter 6 - The Name in the Hospital File

Elena stared at the silent phone.
"My mother never worked for the Valentis."
Sofia entered the kitchen.
"Yes, she did."
Everyone turned.
Elena's face went blank.
"You knew my mother?"
Sofia nodded slowly.
"Maria Bell saved my life."
Adrian stood.
"When?"
"The night I disappeared."
Elena's pulse hammered.
Sofia sat opposite her.
"Maria was a nurse before you were born."
"I know."
"She treated me after the attack."
Elena tried to understand.
"Why was that secret?"
"Because the people looking for me were watching hospitals."
"So Mom hid you?"
"For three days."
"And the baby?"
Sofia's expression changed.
Elena saw the answer before hearing it.
"No."
Sofia reached across the table.
Elena pulled away.
"Don't touch me. Just say it."
Sofia nodded.
"Your mother had a son before Daniel."
Elena shook her head.
"She would have told us."
"She couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because the father was Antonio Valenti."
The room went silent.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
Elena laughed once in disbelief.
"My mother had a child with your uncle?"
"Before he married. Before most of what happened."
"What happened to the baby?"
"Antonio took him."
Elena's stomach turned.
"Why?"
"To protect his reputation."
Adrian's voice hardened.
"My uncle stole Maria's child?"
Sofia nodded.
"He placed the baby with another family."
Elena stood abruptly.
"So I have another brother."
"Yes."
"Who?"
Sofia looked toward the phone Victor had called.
"I think that's what Victor wanted you to discover."
Adrian spoke.
"Victor?"
Sofia nodded.
Elena's mouth went dry.
"No."
"We need proof."
"No."
Marco was already searching records.
"Boss."
Adrian looked over.
Marco's face tightened.
"The age fits."
Elena backed away.
"What age?"
"Victor is thirty-one."
Silence.
Elena stared at the wall.
Victor Sanz.
The man whose crew had assaulted her.
The man who kidnapped Lucia.
The man who had held Daniel.
Her brother.
"No."
Adrian stepped closer.
"We don't know yet."
"Don't tell me that."
"It's true."
"What kind of man does that to his own sister?"
"A man who may not know."
That stopped her.
Elena looked at Sofia.
"Did Victor know?"
"I don't know."
Marco's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Adrian.
"We've got him."
"Where?"
"Hospital basement."
They left immediately.
This time police units went with them.
No more private war.
No more secrets.
Victor was found in an archive room.
He did not resist.
He sat at a metal desk holding Maria Bell's old file.
When Elena entered behind the officers, he looked at her.
"You came."
She stared at him.
"Did you know?"
Victor smiled faintly.
"Know what?"
"That Maria Bell was your mother."
His expression did not change.
That was answer enough.
"You knew."
"Recently."
"How recently?"
"Three weeks."
Elena's eyes filled with rage.
"My arm."
Victor looked away.
"I didn't order that."
"You sent them."
"I told them to recover the ledger."
"They broke my arm."
"I know."
"You kept Daniel."
"He stole from me."
"You kidnapped Lucia."
"I needed leverage."
Elena stepped closer.
"You found out I was your sister and still used me as leverage."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"Don't call me your brother."
"I wasn't planning to."
That hurt him.
Good.
Adrian watched silently.
Victor looked at him.
"You think you're better?"
"No."
Adrian's response surprised everyone.
"I think I had enough people around me willing to stop me from becoming you."
His gaze briefly moved to Elena.
Victor saw it.
He laughed.
"Ah."
Elena ignored him.
"Where's the rest of the evidence?"
Victor leaned back.
"You already have enough."
"Against Antonio and Lorenzo."
"Yes."
"What about you?"
Victor smiled.
"You want me to confess?"
"I want you to stop pretending someone else made your choices."
His smile vanished.
Elena continued.
"Antonio may have stolen you from Mom. Lorenzo may have used you. Maybe you were lied to your whole life."
She looked at her bandaged arm.
"But none of them made you send fifteen men after me."
Victor said nothing.
"None of them made you threaten Lucia."
Silence.
"None of them made you keep Daniel prisoner."
His eyes lowered.
Elena felt something inside her settle.
She had wanted answers.
Now she had one.
Blood did not create obligation.
Shared parents did not erase cruelty.
She stepped back.
"You aren't my brother."
Victor's face tightened.
"Elena."
"Daniel is my brother."
She turned toward the door.
"Lucia is my sister."
She paused.
"You're evidence."
Adrian followed her out.
By evening, Victor Sanz was formally charged in connection with kidnapping, assault conspiracy, extortion, obstruction, bribery, and organized financial crimes.
More charges were expected.
Antonio's network unraveled.
Lorenzo's businesses were seized.
Corrupt officials began resigning.
Several frightened witnesses came forward once they learned Victor's warehouse crew had survived and was cooperating.
For the first time, the truth became bigger than any single family.
Elena returned to Adrian's mansion after sunset.
Her room had been prepared.
Fresh sheets.
Pain medication.
A stack of books.
And, strangely, a new porcelain cup.
She picked it up.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
"Very funny."
"I didn't choose it."
"Marco?"
"Nico."
"I'll fire him."
"No, you won't."
"No."
She put the cup down.
"Adrian."
"Yes?"
"What happens now?"
"Tomorrow?"
"In general."
He leaned against the doorframe.
"My father goes to trial."
"Your uncle?"
"Trial."
"Victor?"
"Same."
"Your mother?"
"She's trying to convince Isabella not to leave."
"And you?"
He considered.
"I don't know."
Elena smiled faintly.
"That's the first time I've heard you say that."
"I don't enjoy it."
"Normal people say it constantly."
"So I've heard."
She looked at her arm.
"I don't want to be afraid anymore."
"You won't have to be."
"Don't do that."
"What?"
"Promise impossible things."
Adrian nodded.
"Fair."
She looked at him.
"I want to go back to work when this heals."
"Fine."
"Same job."
"No."
Her eyebrows rose.
"Excuse me?"
"You were working twelve-hour days."
"I need money."
"I know."
"Then don't reduce my hours."
"I was going to increase your pay."
She stared.
"Why?"
"Because you've been underpaid."
"Was I?"
"Apparently."
"Who told you?"
"Every other employee in this house."
Elena laughed.
Adrian smiled.
Then his expression softened.
"There is another option."
"What?"
"You don't have to work for me."
Elena's smile faded.
"Are you firing me?"
"No."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I'm saying you can decide what you want without owing me anything."
She looked at him.
For most of her life, people had decided what Elena needed.
What she could handle.
What she deserved.
What she should be grateful for.
Adrian was giving her something far more difficult.
Choice.
"I'll think about it."
"Good."
He turned to leave.
"Adrian."
He stopped.
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For seeing my arm."
His face tightened.
"I should have seen it sooner."
"No."
She shook her head.
"I got very good at hiding pain."
Adrian looked at her for a long moment.
"You don't have to do that here."
Then he left.
Elena slept for nearly ten hours.
When she woke, sunlight filled the room.
For the first time in days, no one was missing.
Lucia was downstairs.
Daniel was safe.
The fifteen men who had hurt her were behind locked doors or under protection while cooperating.
Victor could no longer reach her.
The nightmare was ending.
Then Elena noticed an envelope beneath her bedroom door.
No stamp.
No name.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Adrian standing outside the hospital the night Elena was treated.
Timestamp: before he claimed to know she had been injured.
On the back were seven words.
HE KNEW BEFORE THE CUP EVER BROKE.
Elena stared at the door.
Footsteps approached from the hallway.
May you like
Adrian stopped outside her room.
Then the handle slowly turned.
