Chapter 3 - The Woman Adrian Buried

"Adrian."

The voice came again through the darkness.

Elena felt his body lock beside her.

Marco whispered, "Boss?"

Adrian raised one hand.

Silence.

The footsteps stopped outside the storage unit.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

A woman stood in the corridor.

Mid-fifties.

Dark coat.

Silver threaded through black hair.

She looked directly at Adrian.

Elena had never seen fear on his face before.

Now she did.

Not terror.

Recognition.

"Mother," Adrian whispered.

The woman smiled sadly.

"Hello, son."

Elena looked between them.

"You said she was dead."

Adrian did not respond.

His mother stepped into the storage unit.

"My name is Sofia Valenti."

Marco immediately positioned himself between her and Adrian.

Sofia noticed.

"Still loyal, Marco?"

"Give me a reason not to be."

"I don't have one."

Adrian's voice was cold.

"Twelve years."

Sofia looked at him.

"I know."

"You had a funeral."

"I know."

"I buried a coffin."

"I know."

"Was there anyone inside it?"

Sofia's eyes filled.

"No."

Adrian turned away.

For a moment Elena forgot her own fear.

The man standing beside her had built his entire adult life on a grave that had been empty.

"Why?" he asked.

Sofia looked toward the laptop.

"Because Victor Sanz wanted me dead."

"Apparently he failed."

"He thinks he succeeded."

"Until tonight."

"No. He knows now."

"How?"

"Because Daniel found me."

Elena stepped forward.

"You know my brother?"

Sofia nodded.

"He saved my life."

Elena's breath caught.

"Where is he?"

"With Victor."

"We saw him."

"I know."

"Was he helping Victor?"

"No."

Elena nearly collapsed with relief.

Sofia continued.

"Daniel has been working against him for six months."

"Why was he holding a knife behind Lucia?"

"He was cutting her restraints."

Elena closed her eyes.

Adrian looked at Sofia.

"Start talking."

Sofia did.

Twelve years earlier, Victor Sanz had not been a major figure.

He had been an accountant.

Quiet.

Useful.

Invisible.

He handled payments for organizations far more powerful than he was.

Including some connected to Adrian's father.

When Sofia discovered Victor was stealing from everyone and using the money to build his own network, she threatened to expose him.

Victor responded by arranging her death.

Sofia survived the attempt.

But she learned something worse.

Several people inside her own family had helped him.

So she disappeared.

"Who?" Adrian asked.

"I didn't know then."

"And now?"

Sofia looked at the VALENTI folder on Daniel's laptop.

"Now I do."

She opened a document.

A signature appeared.

A. VALENTI.

Adrian frowned.

"That's not mine."

"I know."

She enlarged the metadata.

The authorization had come from an old internal company account.

One Adrian rarely used.

Someone else had access.

"Who?"

Sofia scrolled.

A secondary authentication ID appeared.

AV-02.

Adrian stared at it.

Elena noticed.

"You recognize that."

"My uncle."

Sofia nodded.

"Antonio Valenti."

Adrian's father's younger brother.

The man who had helped raise Adrian after Sofia's supposed death.

The man who had taught Adrian how to run the family businesses.

The man Adrian called every Sunday.

"No," Adrian said.

Sofia's voice softened.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian stepped back.

"Antonio would never work for Victor."

"He doesn't work for Victor."

"Then what?"

"Victor works for him."

Silence.

Elena felt the world tilt.

Adrian's face became unreadable.

"Why Elena?"

Sofia looked at her.

"Daniel discovered Antonio had been laundering money through charities, shipping companies, construction firms, and municipal contracts. He copied the ledger."

"But why watch me?"

"Because Daniel listed you as his emergency contact."

Elena's stomach twisted.

"They followed me because of him."

"At first."

"At first?"

Sofia glanced toward Adrian.

"Then Antonio realized where you worked."

Elena understood.

"Here."

"Yes."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"He thought Daniel placed her in my house."

"He suspected it."

"But I applied through an agency."

"I know."

Elena looked at Adrian.

"So all of this happened because they thought I was spying on you?"

"Not all of it."

Sofia touched the screen.

"Victor's men questioned you because they believed Daniel gave you the ledger. Antonio let them."

Elena stared at Adrian.

"Your uncle let fifteen men hurt me."

His voice was almost too quiet to hear.

"Yes."

Adrian turned to Marco.

"How many men does Victor have in the city?"

"Known? Forty."

"How many worked the warehouse?"

Marco hesitated.

"Fifteen."

Elena's skin prickled.

The title of her nightmare had a number.

Fifteen men.

Fifteen faces.

Fifteen witnesses who had watched while one of them twisted her arm until bone cracked.

"Find them."

Marco nodded.

Elena grabbed Adrian's sleeve.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Don't kill them."

Marco looked away.

Adrian's eyes stayed on hers.

"You think that's what I'm going to do?"

"I don't know what you're going to do."

A painful truth.

Adrian considered it.

"Neither do they."

"Adrian."

"I won't lie to you."

"Then promise me."

"Promise what?"

"That you won't become worse than them because of me."

Something changed in his expression.

Elena's grip loosened.

"I don't want fifteen bodies attached to my name."

"You won't have them."

"That isn't the same promise."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"Then make the right one."

Adrian looked at her for a long moment.

Then nodded.

"I won't kill them."

Elena exhaled.

Marco's eyebrows rose slightly.

Adrian noticed.

"Problem?"

"No, boss."

"Good."

Adrian turned to Sofia.

"Where is Victor holding Daniel and Lucia?"

"I don't know."

"You came here without knowing?"

"I know where he was two hours ago."

"Where?"

"The old Bellini Hotel."

Marco pulled out his phone.

"That place has been empty for years."

"Not underground."

They moved quickly.

Before leaving, Adrian copied the laptop files onto multiple encrypted drives and gave one to Marco, one to Sofia, and kept one.

Elena watched.

"Why three?"

"Because people die."

She frowned.

Adrian looked at her.

"And because computers break."

"That sounded better."

"Good."

The Bellini Hotel stood near the river.

Boarded windows.

Broken marquee.

A building everyone ignored.

Adrian's convoy stopped two blocks away.

He ordered Elena to remain in the vehicle.

She refused.

"Lucia is my sister."

"And this is dangerous."

"Daniel is my brother."

"Exactly."

She stepped out.

Adrian muttered something in Italian.

"What was that?"

"Nothing polite."

"I've heard worse."

"I believe you."

Despite everything, Elena almost smiled.

They entered through a service door.

Sofia led them toward a freight elevator.

The lower level smelled like damp concrete and rust.

They found rooms with cameras.

Empty chairs.

Plastic restraints.

A table covered in burner phones.

But no Lucia.

No Daniel.

No Victor.

Marco found blood near one doorway.

Elena stopped.

Adrian blocked her view.

"Don't."

"Whose is it?"

"We don't know."

She pushed past him.

A bloody handprint marked the wall.

Below it lay something small.

A silver bracelet.

Elena recognized it instantly.

"Lucia."

Her knees weakened.

Adrian caught her.

"She's alive."

"You don't know that."

"No."

"Stop saying things you don't know."

He looked at the bracelet.

"Then I'll say what I do know. They moved quickly. They left equipment. They abandoned vehicles outside. That means they were pressured."

"By whom?"

Adrian looked toward Sofia.

"My mother showing up."

Sofia nodded.

"Victor knew the storage unit had been found."

Marco entered.

"We've got something."

He held a burner phone.

One unsent message.

DOCK 19. BEFORE DAWN.

Adrian checked his watch.

2:07 a.m.

Elena stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means they're moving them."

"Out of the city?"

"Probably."

"Then let's go."

Adrian hesitated.

"Elena—"

"No."

He stopped.

She pointed at her arm.

"They already did this."

Her voice shook, but she did not lower it.

"They already taught me what happens when I stay quiet."

She looked at him.

"I'm not staying behind again."

Adrian nodded once.

"Stay beside me."

They reached Dock 19 at 2:41.

Shipping containers rose like dark buildings beneath floodlights.

The river moved black beyond them.

Adrian's people spread out.

No gunfire.

No shouting.

Only radio whispers.

Then Nico appeared from behind a container.

"We found twelve."

Elena's stomach tightened.

"Twelve what?"

"Men from the warehouse."

Adrian's face hardened.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Elena looked at him.

He had kept his promise.

"Where?"

"Locked inside Container 44."

Adrian frowned.

"Who locked them in?"

"We don't know."

They opened Container 44.

Twelve men sat inside with their hands bound.

Terrified.

Elena recognized several.

One looked at her and immediately lowered his eyes.

Another began talking.

"It wasn't us."

Elena almost laughed.

Her broken arm throbbed.

Adrian stepped inside.

"Where's Victor?"

"No idea."

"Where are the other three?"

The man shook his head.

"They took off."

"Who tied you up?"

No answer.

Adrian crouched.

"Who?"

The man's eyes moved past Adrian.

Toward Sofia.

"You."

Everyone turned.

Sofia frowned.

"I've never seen you before."

The man began shaking.

"Not her."

"Then who?"

He swallowed.

"The woman who looks like her."

Sofia went pale.

Adrian stood.

"What woman?"

The captive looked directly at him.

"Your sister."

Adrian's expression emptied.

"I don't have a sister."

The man laughed nervously.

"Then somebody forgot to tell her."

A phone rang.

Not Adrian's.

Not Elena's.

One of the bound men's phones.

Marco pulled it from his pocket.

The screen displayed a live video call.

Adrian answered.

Lucia appeared.

She was running.

The camera shook wildly.

"Elena!"

"I'm here!"

"They're moving Daniel!"

"Where are you?"

Lucia looked over her shoulder.

"I got away but—"

A gunshot cracked somewhere behind her.

Elena screamed her name.

Lucia kept running.

Then another figure entered the frame.

A woman grabbed Lucia and pulled her behind a wall.

The camera steadied for one second.

Elena saw the woman's face.

Sofia saw it too.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Because the woman protecting Lucia looked exactly like Sofia had looked twenty-five years earlier.

Sofia whispered one name.

"Isabella."

Adrian stared at her.

"Who is Isabella?"

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

May you like

She turned toward her son.

"The daughter I was forced to leave behind."
