Chapter 5 - The Father Behind the Throne

Adrian stared at the man descending the monastery stairs.

"You're dead."

Lorenzo Valenti smiled.

"So was your mother."

No one laughed.

Elena looked at Sofia.

The color had drained from her face.

Isabella took one step backward.

Antonio looked almost pleased.

Daniel remained tied to the chair, watching everything.

Adrian spoke slowly.

"I attended your funeral."

"Families like ours attend many funerals."

"Was yours empty too?"

Lorenzo's smile disappeared.

"No."

That answer made no sense.

Adrian understood first.

"Whose body?"

Lorenzo said nothing.

Sofia answered.

"A man who worked for him."

Adrian turned toward her.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"How many dead people are in this family?"

Lorenzo descended the last step.

"Enough."

He looked at Elena.

"And all this trouble because of a maid."

Adrian moved instantly.

He stepped between them.

"Don't."

One word.

Lorenzo stopped.

Elena saw something extraordinary.

The older man listened.

Not because Adrian was his son.

Because Adrian had become more powerful than he expected.

Lorenzo looked amused.

"You're protective of her."

"She's under my roof."

"Is that all?"

Adrian did not answer.

Elena's face warmed despite everything.

Lorenzo noticed.

"So that's how it is."

Adrian ignored him.

"Release Daniel."

"No."

"Then we have nothing to discuss."

"We have the ledger."

"You don't."

"You brought it."

Lorenzo looked at Elena's necklace.

Adrian smiled faintly.

"No."

Antonio frowned.

Adrian continued.

"You really thought I'd walk into this room carrying the only copy?"

Lorenzo's expression changed.

"Where is it?"

"Everywhere."

Silence.

Marco almost smiled.

Adrian explained.

"Three separate encrypted copies were sent out before we arrived. If Elena, Daniel, Lucia, my mother, my sister, or I disappear tonight, those files become very public."

Antonio cursed.

Lorenzo remained calm.

"To whom?"

"People you can't buy all at once."

Elena understood.

Federal agencies.

Journalists.

Lawyers.

Maybe rival investigators.

Adrian had turned information into insurance.

Lorenzo looked proud despite himself.

"I did teach you something."

Adrian's face hardened.

"You taught me what not to become."

That landed.

Lorenzo's smile vanished.

Behind them, Daniel suddenly shifted his chair.

One of Antonio's men moved toward him.

Isabella shouted.

Everything happened at once.

Marco tackled the nearest guard.

Sofia pulled Elena behind a stone column.

Adrian moved toward Daniel.

A shot cracked into the ceiling.

Dust fell.

No graphic chaos.

Just movement.

Shouting.

Footsteps.

Then sirens.

Lorenzo's head snapped toward the doors.

Antonio looked stunned.

"What did you do?"

Adrian smiled.

"Made another choice."

The monastery doors burst open.

Agents entered.

State police followed.

Lorenzo looked at his son with something close to disbelief.

"You called law enforcement?"

"I called the ones who weren't in your ledger."

Within minutes, Antonio was restrained.

Two guards surrendered.

Lorenzo tried to leave through the rear corridor but found Isabella waiting with two investigators.

Victor Sanz was not there.

That mattered.

Elena ran to Daniel.

She knelt beside him.

"You're an idiot."

He laughed and cried at the same time.

"I know."

She hugged him with one arm.

"You let me think you were dead."

"I was trying to keep you safe."

"They broke my arm."

Daniel's expression collapsed.

"I know."

"No. You don't."

"I saw it."

Elena froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked down.

"Victor showed me the warehouse footage."

Adrian approached.

Daniel continued.

"I tried to give him everything after that."

"Why didn't he stop?"

"Because Antonio wanted proof Elena had the original."

Elena stared at her brother.

"You knew it was in my necklace."

"Yes."

"I wore it every day."

"That's why it was safe."

She slapped him with her good hand.

Not hard.

Enough.

Daniel accepted it.

"I deserved that."

"You deserved two."

"Your arm's broken."

"Don't tempt me."

For the first time in days, she laughed.

It turned into crying.

Daniel held her.

Adrian stepped away to give them privacy.

Hours later, dawn began coloring the sky.

The fifteen men from the warehouse had, in fact, vanished before sunrise.

Not into graves.

Into interrogation rooms.

Safe houses.

Holding cells.

Three had fled and been intercepted at the airport.

Five agreed to testify.

Four were held on assault and kidnapping charges.

The remaining three led investigators to locations tied to Victor Sanz.

By sunrise, Victor's network was collapsing.

But Victor himself remained missing.

Elena sat in Adrian's kitchen with a cup of tea.

Her arm had been checked by a doctor.

No new damage.

Lucia slept upstairs.

Daniel was giving a statement under protection.

Sofia and Isabella were somewhere inside the mansion attempting a reunion twenty years overdue.

Adrian entered.

His tie was gone.

His sleeves rolled up.

He looked exhausted.

Elena studied him.

"You didn't kill them."

"No."

"Thank you."

"You shouldn't have had to ask."

"But I did."

"Yes."

He sat opposite her.

"Are you afraid of me?"

Elena considered lying.

"No."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Okay. Sometimes."

"Better."

"But not for the reason you think."

"What reason?"

"You're the first person I've met who can change an entire room by lowering his voice."

"Useful skill."

"Terrible dinner-party habit."

A faint smile.

Elena looked at him.

"What happens to your father?"

"If the evidence holds, prison."

"Antonio?"

"Same."

"And Victor?"

Adrian's expression changed.

"We find him."

Elena stared into her tea.

"I want to go home."

"Your apartment isn't safe."

"I know."

"You can stay here."

"I'm your employee."

"You're not working."

"I need a job."

"You have one when you're healed."

She looked up.

"You'd keep me after all this?"

"Elena, you dropped one cup."

She smiled despite herself.

"An expensive cup."

"I've broken more expensive things."

"I believe that."

Silence settled.

Comfortable this time.

Then Marco entered.

"Boss."

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

"We found Victor."

Elena stood.

"Where?"

Marco hesitated.

"That's the problem."

Adrian rose.

"Where?"

Marco handed him a tablet.

Security footage appeared.

A hospital corridor.

Victor Sanz walking in a white coat.

Timestamp: twelve minutes ago.

Elena frowned.

"Which hospital?"

Marco looked at her.

"The one where your mother died."

Her breath caught.

"My mother died seven years ago."

Marco nodded.

"Victor accessed her archived medical file."

Adrian's expression sharpened.

"Why?"

Marco swiped to another image.

A record had been opened.

The patient name read:

MARIA BELL.

Below it was a notation.

CONFIDENTIAL MATERNITY RECORD.

Elena stared.

"Maternity?"

Daniel and Lucia were her only siblings.

At least that was what she had always believed.

Marco enlarged another line.

A newborn's name appeared.

MALE INFANT BELL.

Date of birth: thirty-one years ago.

Elena's heart stopped.

She was twenty-nine.

Daniel was thirty-four.

"Who is that?"

Marco looked at Adrian.

"We don't know."

Then the mansion phone rang.

Adrian answered.

Victor Sanz's voice came through the speaker.

"Ask Elena why her mother worked for the Valentis."

Elena went cold.

Victor laughed softly.

May you like

"And then ask Adrian who that baby became."

The line went dead.
