Chapter 7 - The Last Name in the Ledger

Victor Vale fired.
Adrian moved first.
He knocked Daniel sideways.
The bullet struck the wall.
"Stop!" Adrian shouted.
Vale fired again.
Carlo returned fire.
Glass shattered.
Men scattered.
Lily cried beneath a steel desk.
Evelyn screamed from the upper platform.
Adrian grabbed Vale's arm as he advanced.
"What are you doing?"
Vale twisted free.
"Daniel killed my son."
Daniel froze.
"No."
Vale's face contorted.
"The ledger proves it."
Daniel shook his head.
"It proves Sal ordered the hit."
"It shows your signature."
"Forged."
Vale aimed again.
Adrian stepped between them.
"Enough."
Vale stared at him.
"Move."
"No."
"He killed Michael."
"Then prove it."
"I waited eight years."
"Wait eight more minutes."
Vale's jaw clenched.
Adrian pointed toward the open archive door.
"The evidence is right there."
That stopped him.
Daniel looked toward the archive.
"Salvatore."
Everyone turned.
The upper platform was empty.
Salvatore had disappeared.
So had Evelyn.
Lily saw it.
"Mom!"
Adrian ran upstairs.
Daniel followed.
A rear door swung closed.
They chased.
Beyond it was a loading tunnel.
Salvatore dragged Evelyn toward a waiting car.
Adrian shouted.
"Stop!"
Salvatore turned and fired.
Daniel shoved Adrian aside.
The bullet struck Daniel's shoulder.
He fell.
Evelyn broke free.
Salvatore grabbed her again.
Lily's voice echoed behind them.
"Mom!"
Salvatore looked back.
For one second.
One mistake.
Evelyn drove her heel into his knee.
Salvatore stumbled.
Adrian reached him.
They hit the ground.
Adrian knocked the gun away.
Salvatore punched him.
Adrian hit back.
Years of rage entered every movement.
The funeral.
His mother's grief.
Daniel's empty grave.
Lily hiding in a bakery.
All of it.
Adrian pinned Salvatore.
His father laughed through blood.
"Do it."
Adrian froze.
"Kill me."
Adrian's fist remained raised.
Salvatore smiled.
"That's what you are."
Adrian looked at Lily.
She stood twenty feet away beside Evelyn.
Watching.
Then he looked at his own tattooed hands.
Hands everyone feared.
Hands Lily had trusted.
Adrian lowered his fist.
"No."
Salvatore's smile faded.
"You don't get the easy way."
Police sirens sounded outside.
Not ordinary police.
Federal agents.
Daniel had arranged a data dump the moment the archive opened.
Every record had been transmitted automatically.
Salvatore heard the sirens.
His face changed.
"You idiot."
Adrian stood.
"No."
He looked at Daniel.
"You lost."
Agents flooded the dock.
Salvatore was arrested.
So were dozens of his men.
Victor Vale lowered his weapon.
The archive was secured.
Evelyn ran to Lily.
Mother and daughter collided.
Lily sobbed into her coat.
"I saved your sandwich."
Evelyn broke.
She laughed and cried at once.
"You saved me a sandwich?"
Lily pulled the crushed wrapping from her pocket.
Half the turkey sandwich was still there.
Evelyn hugged her tighter.
Adrian turned away.
He gave them the moment.
Daniel sat against the wall holding his shoulder.
Adrian approached.
"You alive?"
"Unfortunately."
"Good."
Daniel smiled weakly.
"You still hit hard."
"You deserved worse."
"Probably."
Vale entered the archive.
He found the ledger.
Adrian followed.
Pages.
Digital backups.
Signatures.
Transactions.
Names.
Vale searched for Michael.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
"Here."
Adrian looked.
The signature beneath Michael Vale's death order was Daniel Bennett.
Vale's hand trembled.
Daniel stepped inside.
"That's fake."
Vale pointed.
"Your signature."
Daniel nodded.
"Look closer."
Adrian remembered the seal.
Microstamp.
They examined the entry.
No stamp.
Forged.
Vale stared.
Then another line appeared beneath it.
Authorization: S. Moretti.
Verified seal.
Salvatore.
Vale's shoulders sagged.
Eight years of vengeance collapsed in one breath.
"He killed my boy."
Adrian said nothing.
Vale sat.
For the first time Adrian had ever seen, Victor Vale looked old.
Daniel scrolled.
More names.
More crimes.
Then Carlo's transactions appeared.
Daniel pointed.
"See?"
Carlo stepped forward.
"Check the stamp."
They did.
No stamp.
Forged.
Daniel stared.
Carlo said quietly, "I told you."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Carlo shrugged.
"You were always suspicious."
"You were always annoying."
They almost smiled.
Then Adrian noticed another file.
MORETTI, ADRIAN.
He opened it.
A contract.
An order.
His name.
Target.
Adrian Moretti.
Date: tomorrow.
Salvatore had already planned his son's death.
Reason:
CONTROL FAILURE.
Adrian stared.
His father had never intended to negotiate.
He intended to remove everyone.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Vale.
Carlo.
Adrian.
Maybe even Sofia.
A complete cleanup.
Adrian closed the file.
"It's over."
Daniel looked at him.
"Not yet."
"What?"
Daniel opened a final encrypted folder.
One entry remained.
Protected.
He used the ring.
His retina.
Then looked toward Lily.
Adrian frowned.
"Again?"
Daniel nodded.
Lily placed her finger on the scanner.
The file opened.
A list of names appeared.
Not criminals.
Children.
Hundreds.
Locations.
Dates.
Status fields.
Adrian felt sick.
The network had moved far more people than anyone realized.
Some had been recovered.
Some not.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
"Daniel."
"I didn't know this existed."
Adrian stared at the screen.
One status column read:
ACTIVE TRANSFERS.
Tomorrow.
Six locations.
Salvatore's arrest had not automatically stopped them.
The network still had operators in the field.
Adrian looked at the agents.
"How fast can you move?"
The lead federal agent stared at the list.
"Immediately."
Teams deployed.
Adrian stayed.
He was done making decisions outside the law tonight.
Daniel looked at him.
"Changed?"
"No."
Adrian watched Lily.
"Priorities."
Hours passed.
Reports came in.
Boston.
Philadelphia.
Baltimore.
Cleveland.
Detroit.
Newark.
Vehicles intercepted.
Warehouses raided.
Children recovered.
Adults arrested.
The system Salvatore built for twenty years began collapsing in one night.
At dawn, one transfer remained unresolved.
A van traveling north from Newark.
Federal units lost it near the state line.
Adrian stood over the map.
"Where would Sal hide a transfer route?"
Daniel thought.
"Old quarry road."
Carlo nodded.
"Near Harriman."
Agents changed course.
Adrian looked toward Lily.
She was asleep against Evelyn.
Safe.
For the first time since the bakery, she looked six.
Not brave.
Not hunted.
Just six.
Adrian allowed himself to breathe.
Then an agent's radio crackled.
"We found the van."
Everyone looked up.
"Subjects detained."
A pause.
"Children recovered."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel sat beside her.
Adrian looked at the sunrise through the loading doors.
It was almost finished.
Almost.
Then his phone vibrated.
One message.
No number.
A photograph.
Lily asleep in the warehouse.
Taken less than one minute ago.
May you like
Beneath it were seven words.
SALVATORE WAS NEVER THE MAN IN CHARGE.
