Chapter 5 - The Father in the Chair

Adrian did not move.
Salvatore Moretti stood slowly.
He was seventy-four now.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Same eyes.
Same voice.
Same habit of adjusting his cuff before saying something important.
"Sit down," Salvatore said.
Adrian laughed once.
"You don't get to tell me what to do."
Sofia stood.
"Adrian—"
He looked at his mother.
"You knew."
Tears filled her eyes.
"Please."
"You knew he was alive."
"For six years."
"Six years?"
"I didn't know before that."
Adrian looked between them.
"Everyone lies."
Salvatore stepped forward.
"Daniel lied too."
"Don't say his name."
"Why? He's the reason we're here."
"He's the reason Lily is alive."
Salvatore's face changed slightly.
"So you've met her."
Adrian's hand curled.
"Where are Daniel and Evelyn?"
"I don't know."
"Liar."
"Your mother can confirm."
Adrian looked at Sofia.
She whispered, "He doesn't."
Adrian's laugh was bitter.
"You expect me to trust either of you?"
"No," Sofia said. "But listen."
Salvatore poured himself water.
Not wine.
He had always hated drinking while talking business.
Some habits survived death.
"Daniel stole records from me," Salvatore said.
"Records of what?"
"My operations."
"Trafficking?"
Salvatore's eyes narrowed.
"Carlo told you."
Adrian looked at his uncle.
Carlo stepped into the room.
Salvatore's face hardened.
"Brother."
Carlo said nothing.
Adrian turned back.
"Is it true?"
Salvatore sighed.
"Not the way you think."
"That's usually what guilty people say."
"My network moved people."
"Against their will?"
"Some."
Adrian felt sick.
Salvatore continued.
"Most were debt arrangements. Smuggling. Labor."
"Children?"
Silence.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Children?"
Salvatore's eyes moved away.
That was the answer.
Adrian grabbed his father by the shirt.
Sofia screamed.
Carlo moved but stopped.
Adrian's voice was low.
"You built that while my mother thought you were dead?"
Salvatore did not resist.
"I built an empire."
"You built a sewer."
Salvatore's expression hardened.
"I built what kept this family alive."
"No."
Adrian released him.
"You built something I would burn."
Salvatore smiled.
"And that's why I stayed dead."
Adrian stared.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The truth."
Salvatore adjusted his collar.
"You always had your mother's conscience."
Adrian nearly struck him.
Instead, he asked, "Why Daniel?"
"Because he found the books."
"So you tried to kill him."
"I ordered him stopped."
"By putting a bullet in his car?"
"He survived."
"That makes it better?"
"No."
Salvatore sat again.
"Daniel disappeared with evidence. I searched for years."
"And found him."
"Recently."
"Through Lily."
Salvatore said nothing.
Adrian understood.
"You used the girl."
"I used circumstances."
"She's six."
"She's leverage."
Sofia slapped Salvatore.
Hard.
The room went silent.
Sofia's hand shook.
"Never say that again."
Salvatore touched his cheek.
For the first time, Adrian saw something human crack through him.
Shame.
Maybe.
Or surprise.
Sofia turned to Adrian.
"I helped Evelyn."
Adrian stared.
"What?"
"She came to me three weeks ago."
"Why?"
"Because she knew Salvatore was closing in."
"Where is she?"
"I don't know now."
"What did you do?"
"I arranged the taxi. The bakery. Your route."
Adrian felt pieces lock together.
"You created the fake street closure."
Sofia nodded.
"You delivered Lily to me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you were the only person Salvatore feared she might trust."
Adrian looked at his father.
Salvatore did not deny it.
"What about the Mercedes?"
Sofia's face tightened.
"Not mine."
"Pike?"
"Salvatore's."
Adrian turned.
Salvatore smiled faintly.
"Pike was useful."
"Vale says Pike is dead."
"He is."
"You killed him."
"He failed."
Adrian's stomach turned.
"Where is Evelyn?"
Salvatore looked at his watch.
"Probably still alive."
"Where?"
"Daniel has her."
Adrian froze.
"What?"
"Daniel took his own wife."
"Why?"
"Because he no longer trusts anyone."
"That's insane."
"Fear does that."
Adrian looked at Sofia.
She looked uncertain.
Salvatore continued.
"Daniel thinks Evelyn compromised the ledger."
"Did she?"
"I don't know."
"What does he want?"
"You."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel believes you're the only person who can verify which names are real."
Adrian thought of the ledger.
Moretti signatures.
Carlo's signature.
Maybe forged.
Maybe not.
"How?"
"Your father's private seal," Carlo said.
Adrian turned.
Carlo looked at Salvatore.
"Every legitimate transfer from the old Moretti accounts had a microstamp."
Salvatore glared.
Carlo continued.
"Daniel wouldn't know which entries were fabricated without it."
Adrian understood.
"Where is the seal?"
Sofia looked at him.
"In your father's ring."
The lion.
Adrian looked at Salvatore's hand.
No ring.
"Where is it?"
Salvatore smiled.
"Lily has it."
Adrian's blood chilled.
"What?"
"Daniel hid it with her."
"The rabbit?"
"No."
Adrian remembered the bracelet.
The torn paper.
But no ring.
Then Lily's boots.
The key.
Still no ring.
Salvatore said, "He hid it somewhere you wouldn't search."
Adrian's phone rang.
Marco.
He answered instantly.
"Where's Lily?"
"Safe."
"Check her coat."
"For what?"
"A ring."
Silence.
Then movement.
Lily's voice faintly in background.
Marco returned.
"Nothing."
"Boots."
"Nothing."
"Rabbit."
"Already checked."
Adrian looked at Salvatore.
Salvatore seemed amused.
"Ask about her necklace."
Adrian closed his eyes.
He had never noticed a necklace.
Because it was under her shirt.
"Marco."
A pause.
Then Marco said, "She has one."
"What?"
"Small chain. Something wrapped in cloth."
"Open it."
Lily protested.
"No! Daddy said—"
Adrian heard Marco soothe her.
Then silence.
"Adrian."
"What?"
"It's a ring."
Salvatore smiled.
Adrian felt fury.
Daniel had placed the Moretti seal on a six-year-old child.
Not because he wanted her involved.
Because he knew no adult would look there first.
"Keep it safe."
"There's more."
"What?"
"Inside the cloth."
Marco unfolded something.
"A note."
"Read it."
"It's addressed to you."
Adrian waited.
Marco read.
"'If you're hearing this, Sal found us. Trust the girl. Trust Evelyn. Trust no Moretti over fifty.'"
Carlo muttered something.
Sofia closed her eyes.
Salvatore laughed.
"Daniel always had flair."
Marco continued.
"'If Adrian's mother is with Salvatore, she is not there willingly.'"
Adrian looked at Sofia.
Her face collapsed.
Salvatore's smile vanished.
Adrian understood.
"Mom."
She whispered, "I'm sorry."
Salvatore moved.
Fast for his age.
He grabbed Sofia from behind.
A small pistol appeared in his hand.
Carlo reached inside his coat.
Salvatore pressed the gun beneath Sofia's jaw.
"Don't."
Adrian's body went cold.
Salvatore backed toward the study door.
"You always were sentimental."
Adrian said nothing.
"That's your weakness."
"No."
Salvatore smiled.
"It is."
Adrian looked at his mother.
Her eyes were terrified.
But she shook her head once.
Tiny.
Don't.
Salvatore continued backing away.
"Bring me Lily."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"Never."
"Then your mother dies."
Sofia closed her eyes.
Adrian saw it.
The old fear.
Twenty-two years of it.
He realized then that Sofia had not reunited with her husband.
She had been trapped by him.
"I'll bring the ring," Adrian said.
Salvatore stopped.
"Better."
"But not Lily."
"The ring is useless without the girl."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
Salvatore smiled.
"Daniel changed the encryption."
Adrian's heart sank.
"Lily is the password."
"No."
"Not something she knows."
Salvatore backed through the doorway.
"Something she is."
Carlo whispered, "Biometric."
Adrian understood.
Daniel had protected the final evidence with Lily's fingerprint.
Salvatore needed her alive.
For now.
That was leverage.
Adrian took one step.
Salvatore fired into the ceiling.
Sofia screamed.
"Next one is lower."
Adrian stopped.
Salvatore dragged Sofia toward the service elevator.
The doors opened behind him.
Before they closed, he said one final thing.
"Bring Lily to Pier 19 at midnight."
The elevator doors shut.
Adrian ran toward the stairs.
Then Marco called again.
His voice was different.
Urgent.
"Adrian."
"What?"
"Someone found the safe house."
Adrian stopped.
Gunfire cracked through Marco's phone.
May you like
Then Lily screamed.
The line went dead.
