Chapter 3 - The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Adrian read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

HE NEVER DIED. ASK THE GIRL.

Lily sat beside him in the SUV.

She stared at the photograph.

"That's Daddy."

Marco nearly dropped his phone.

Adrian looked at Lily.

"You know him?"

"Yes."

"When did you last see him?"

She thought.

"Before Mom started crying all the time."

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"Days?"

She shook her head.

"Weeks?"

Another shake.

"Months?"

"Maybe."

Adrian's chest tightened.

Daniel Bennett had been declared dead seven years earlier.

Adrian had attended the funeral.

Closed casket.

He had stood beside Daniel's mother while she collapsed.

He had spent years blaming himself.

Years hunting the people he believed responsible.

And now a six-year-old girl looked at a recent photograph and called the dead man Daddy.

"Where did you live with him?"

"Different places."

"House?"

"Sometimes."

"Apartment?"

"Sometimes."

"Hotel?"

She nodded.

"Did he use another name?"

Lily's forehead wrinkled.

"Mom called him Danny."

"Did other people?"

"Sometimes Mr. Brooks."

Marco turned in the front seat.

"Daniel Brooks."

Adrian stared out the window.

A ghost identity.

Daniel had been alive.

All this time.

"Drive," Adrian said.

"Where?"

"Grand Central."

The SUV moved.

Lily held the photograph.

She traced her father's face with one finger.

Adrian watched.

"Did your dad ever talk about me?"

"Mom did."

"What did she say?"

"That you and Daddy were brothers."

"Not real brothers."

"I know."

Adrian looked away.

Emotion was inconvenient.

He had spent decades learning to lock it behind his ribs.

But Daniel had been the closest thing he ever had to a brother.

"Why did your father disappear?"

Lily shrugged.

"Mom said he was keeping us safe."

"From Victor Vale?"

At the name, Lily became still.

Adrian noticed.

"What?"

"Daddy said never say that name outside."

"Why?"

"He said walls can hear."

Marco looked back again.

Adrian's expression hardened.

Daniel had always been paranoid.

But Daniel's paranoia had also saved Adrian's life twice.

At Grand Central, they entered through the service level.

Adrian avoided cameras whenever possible.

He knew the old locker section Daniel once used.

Most had been renovated.

But a row near the lower tracks remained.

The brass key fit locker 417.

Adrian stared at the number.

"So that's it."

Lily nodded.

"Mom said the number was safe."

Adrian inserted the key.

"Stand back."

Marco drew closer.

Dominic positioned himself behind them.

The lock opened.

Inside sat a child's red backpack.

Nothing else.

Adrian pulled it out.

Lily gasped.

"Mine."

"You've seen this?"

"Daddy gave it to me."

"When?"

"On my birthday."

Adrian opened the backpack.

Inside were crayons.

A stuffed rabbit.

A juice box.

A children's book.

No documents.

No drive.

No money.

Marco frowned.

"That's it?"

Adrian searched the lining.

Nothing.

Then Lily reached for the stuffed rabbit.

"Mr. Buttons."

She hugged it.

Something clicked.

Adrian heard it.

"Give me the rabbit."

Lily looked worried.

"I won't hurt it."

She handed it over.

He examined the stitching.

One seam was newer.

He used a pocketknife to cut three threads.

Inside was a USB drive.

Marco exhaled.

"There it is."

Adrian plugged it into an offline laptop.

Encrypted.

Password required.

Four attempts allowed.

He stared at the screen.

"Any ideas?"

Lily looked at Mr. Buttons.

"Daddy said rabbits always remember birthdays."

Adrian looked at her.

"Your birthday?"

"April seventeenth."

Adrian typed 0417.

Access granted.

Folders appeared.

Shipping manifests.

Bank transfers.

Security footage.

Names.

Dozens of names.

Marco leaned closer.

"This could bury Vale."

Adrian opened one file.

It was a ledger.

Payments from Vale companies to police officers, port inspectors, judges, contractors.

Then he saw something else.

Moretti Logistics.

His own company.

Adrian's face hardened.

There were payments under his company's name.

Millions.

"Fake," Marco said.

"Maybe."

Adrian scrolled.

The signatures looked legitimate.

One belonged to his uncle Carlo.

Adrian's stomach tightened.

Carlo Moretti had practically raised him after Adrian's father died.

If the signatures were real, Victor Vale had not merely infiltrated Adrian's business.

He had someone inside the family.

Lily tugged Adrian's sleeve.

"Is Mom there?"

He looked at the files.

"I don't know yet."

He searched names.

EVELYN BENNETT.

A folder appeared.

Inside was a video.

Adrian opened it.

Lily's mother appeared on screen.

Not restrained.

Not frightened.

This was recorded weeks earlier.

She sat in front of a blank wall.

"My name is Evelyn Bennett. If Adrian Moretti is watching this, then Daniel's plan failed."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

Evelyn continued.

"Adrian, Daniel is alive. He survived the attack seven years ago. He disappeared because the person who ordered it wasn't Victor Vale."

Marco and Dominic looked at Adrian.

Evelyn took a breath.

"It came from inside your own organization."

Adrian stared at the screen.

"The evidence on this drive is incomplete. Daniel has the rest."

The video glitched.

Then continued.

"If Victor gets Lily, he'll use her to find Daniel."

Lily whispered, "Daddy."

Evelyn's expression softened on screen.

"If Lily is with you, protect her. Whatever you've been told about Daniel, understand this: he stayed away because he believed your life depended on it."

The video ended.

Silence filled the locker corridor.

Marco spoke first.

"We need to get out."

Adrian nodded.

"Copy everything."

They duplicated the drive.

Then Dominic's phone vibrated.

"Problem."

"What?"

"Three men entered the west concourse. Two more south."

"Vale?"

"Unknown."

Adrian looked around.

"How did they find us?"

Marco's face tightened.

"Maybe they didn't."

Then Lily said, "Mr. Buttons."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

She held the rabbit.

"Daddy said never take him near bad men."

Adrian stared.

He took the toy again.

Squeezed the body.

Something hard sat beneath the stuffing.

He cut another seam.

A tiny GPS transmitter fell into his hand.

Marco swore.

"Tracker."

Adrian looked at the device.

Old.

Battery still live.

Daniel had tracked the backpack.

Which meant someone else might have access.

Or Daniel himself knew they were here.

Adrian crushed it under his heel.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor.

"Move."

Dominic lifted Lily.

They took a service tunnel.

Adrian led.

Marco followed with the drive.

Behind them, voices grew louder.

They reached an emergency exit.

Locked.

Marco forced it.

Alarm sounded.

They emerged onto a lower platform.

A train was arriving.

Crowds moved.

Adrian used them as cover.

Then he saw a familiar face.

His uncle Carlo stood at the far end of the platform.

Alone.

Carlo Moretti.

Sixty-two.

Gray hair.

Camel coat.

The man who had raised Adrian.

Carlo looked directly at him.

Then at Lily.

Adrian's hand moved toward his weapon.

Carlo raised both palms.

"Easy."

"What are you doing here?"

"Saving you."

"From who?"

Carlo's gaze moved toward the stairwell.

"Vale's men."

"How did you know?"

Carlo hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You knew about the locker."

"No."

"You knew we were coming here."

"I knew Daniel would use Grand Central."

"Daniel's dead."

Carlo's face changed.

"Is he?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"What do you know?"

Carlo looked at Lily again.

"More than you want to hear."

"Try me."

The train doors opened.

People streamed out.

Carlo lowered his voice.

"Daniel called me three nights ago."

Adrian felt rage rising.

"You knew he was alive."

"I found out three nights ago."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

Adrian grabbed Carlo's coat.

Lily gasped.

Adrian released him immediately.

Carlo stared at Adrian.

"You want the truth?"

"Yes."

"Daniel didn't disappear because someone tried to kill him."

Adrian waited.

Carlo's next words cut deeper.

"He disappeared because he discovered your father was still alive."

The platform noise seemed to vanish.

Adrian stared.

"My father died twenty-two years ago."

Carlo shook his head.

"No."

Adrian's voice became dangerous.

"Don't."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't say his name unless you can prove it."

Carlo reached into his coat.

Marco raised his weapon.

"Slow."

Carlo removed an old photograph.

He handed it to Adrian.

Three men stood outside a warehouse.

Carlo.

Daniel.

And Adrian's father, Salvatore Moretti.

The photo had a date printed in the corner.

Five years ago.

Adrian stared at it.

Impossible.

His father looked older.

But unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same scar beside the mouth.

Same ring.

The lion.

Lily touched the photograph.

"That's Grandpa Sal."

Adrian looked at her sharply.

"What did you call him?"

"Grandpa Sal."

"How do you know him?"

"Daddy took me to see him."

"When?"

"Lots of times."

Adrian's knees almost gave.

The dead were multiplying.

Daniel.

His father.

Both alive.

Both hidden.

Both connected to Lily.

"Why?" Adrian demanded.

Carlo looked ashamed.

"Because Salvatore ordered Daniel's death."

Adrian stared.

"Why?"

"Daniel discovered what Salvatore had built after leaving New York."

"What?"

Carlo's eyes moved toward Lily.

"A network."

"What kind?"

Carlo didn't answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

"What kind?"

"A trafficking network."

Adrian felt sick.

"No."

"Adrian—"

"No."

"Your father used Vale's companies, your companies, anyone he could compromise."

"No."

"Daniel found the records."

Adrian's hands clenched.

"My father would never—"

"Your father was not the man you remember."

Lily began crying quietly.

Adrian stopped.

He crouched.

"Hey."

She wiped her face.

"Mom said Grandpa Sal was bad."

Adrian stared at her.

"Did your father say that?"

She nodded.

"He said we had to hide from him."

A train whistle sounded.

Carlo looked toward the stairs.

"We need to go."

"Where?"

"There's a safe apartment in Queens."

"No."

"Adrian—"

"I'm not taking Lily anywhere you control."

Carlo's face tightened.

"You think I'm involved?"

"I think your signature is on Vale's payments."

Carlo went still.

"What payments?"

Adrian watched him.

Real surprise.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Marco's phone buzzed.

He looked down.

"Incoming file."

"From?"

"Unknown."

A video arrived.

He opened it.

Daniel Bennett appeared.

Alive.

Unshaven.

Bleeding from the forehead.

He looked directly at the camera.

"Adrian, if you have Lily, listen carefully."

Adrian's heart hammered.

Daniel continued.

"Do not trust Carlo."

Carlo's face drained.

The video ended.

Then another message appeared.

A location.

May you like

And beneath it, five words.

COME ALONE OR EVELYN DIES.
