Chapter 6 - The Woman in the Security Footage

Rachel stepped backward.

“Who's there?”

Silence.

She switched on her phone light.

Shelves.

Boxes.

Old records.

Then movement.

Sarah Kim emerged.

Rachel stared.

“Sarah?”

Sarah raised her hands.

“I can explain.”

Rachel almost laughed.

Everyone could explain.

Sarah revealed she had followed Rachel because she had seen someone accessing the basement security system.

Together they searched M-317.

Nobody else was there.

The breathing had come from an old oxygen concentrator that had inexplicably switched on.

Someone had been there seconds earlier.

A cabinet stood open.

Inside was a videotape.

Daniel Hayes — 2015.

Hospital security still maintained equipment capable of playing archived media.

Rachel watched.

Her father appeared on screen.

He was sitting in the same room.

“I discovered what Marco is moving through Rossi shipping containers.”

Daniel held up medical invoices.

Marco had been disguising illegal shipments as humanitarian medical supplies.

But Daniel's next statement changed everything.

“Marco isn't running the operation.”

Rachel leaned closer.

“He reports to someone inside Harbor Mercy.”

The recording distorted.

The name vanished beneath static.

Sarah rewound it.

Nothing.

Then Daniel held up a document.

A symbol was visible.

A small black cross inside a circle.

Rachel had seen it recently.

On Dr. Brooks's trauma chart.

She found Brooks immediately.

He denied knowing the symbol.

Then he remembered.

The chart had already been in Trauma Bay Three when Caleb arrived.

Someone had prepared it before the ambulance reached the hospital.

Someone knew Caleb was coming.

Rachel requested security footage.

At 2:16 a.m., twenty-seven minutes before Caleb flatlined, a woman entered Trauma Bay Three.

She wore scrubs.

She placed the chart beside the bed.

Her face remained hidden.

Then she turned.

Rachel froze.

The woman looked exactly like Sarah.

Rachel slowly looked beside her.

Sarah stared at the screen.

“That isn't me.”

The timestamp proved Sarah had been treating another patient upstairs.

Someone had disguised herself as Sarah.

The impostor had also touched Caleb's IV supplies.

Rachel ordered toxicology.

Results came back forty minutes later.

Caleb's blood contained a drug never administered by the trauma team.

A powerful cardiac suppressant.

The bullets hadn't stopped his heart.

Someone inside Harbor Mercy had.

Rachel ran to Room 412.

Caleb was asleep.

His IV pump was running.

Rachel examined the medication bag.

A tiny puncture marked the injection port.

She ripped the line out.

Caleb woke.

“What happened?”

“Someone poisoned you the first night.”

Enzo locked the door.

Rachel showed them the footage.

Caleb stared at the disguised woman.

Then his face changed.

He knew her.

“Who?”

Caleb whispered:

“Isabella.”

Enzo went pale.

Rachel looked between them.

“Who is Isabella?”

Caleb didn't answer.

Enzo did.

“Caleb's sister.”

Rachel frowned.

“You have a sister?”

Caleb stared at the frozen security image.

“I did.”

“What does that mean?”

“She died eighteen years ago.”

The monitor beside Caleb suddenly flickered.

A message replaced his ECG waveform.

HELLO, BROTHER.

Caleb sat upright.

Then another line appeared.

YOU LEFT ME TO DIE.

And behind Rachel, the locked bathroom door slowly opened.
