Chapter 4 - The Bullet That Wasn't Meant for Caleb

Brooks raised both hands.

“I can explain.”

Enzo aimed his gun.

“Start.”

Brooks revealed that Daniel Hayes had once treated his father after a workplace accident. Years later, Daniel approached Brooks privately.

Daniel knew someone might kill him.

He entrusted Brooks with a sealed packet.

Brooks had never opened it.

Until Caleb Rossi arrived bleeding into Trauma Bay Three.

Inside was the ledger.

Rachel opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Shipping numbers.

Payments.

One entry appeared repeatedly.

H.B.

Rachel looked at Brooks.

His face fell.

“Not me.”

“Convenient.”

“My full name is Harrison James Brooks.”

Enzo took the ledger.

“H.B. could be anyone.”

Rachel noticed something else.

The night Caleb was shot, one shipment number appeared beside Pier Nine.

The date was current.

This wasn't an eleven-year-old conspiracy.

It was alive.

They returned to Harbor Mercy.

Caleb was furious Rachel had left.

She ignored him and showed him the ledger.

He recognized the handwriting.

Daniel's.

Then he saw the current date.

“That can't be.”

“Why?”

“Because this ledger ended eleven years ago.”

Someone had continued Daniel's records.

Caleb studied the shipment code.

Then he went silent.

“What?”

“That shipment belongs to one of my legitimate medical-supply subsidiaries.”

Rachel frowned.

“It was scheduled to deliver emergency equipment to Harbor Mercy.”

Brooks paled.

The shooting hadn't happened randomly.

Caleb had been inspecting a warehouse after discovering discrepancies in medical shipments.

Someone opened fire.

One bullet struck his shoulder.

One tore through his lung.

The third nearly killed him.

But Caleb remembered something.

The shooter had aimed again after he fell.

Not at Caleb.

At the woman standing behind him.

Rachel stared.

“What woman?”

Caleb looked at her.

“Your mother.”

Silence.

Rachel felt her knees weaken.

“My mother was there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Another lie.

She could see it.

Rachel stepped closer.

“You're going to tell me everything.”

Caleb finally admitted the truth.

Margaret Hayes had contacted him two weeks earlier.

She believed someone had found Daniel's evidence.

She wanted Caleb's protection.

They met secretly at the warehouse.

The gunmen arrived.

Margaret escaped.

Caleb didn't.

Rachel's phone rang.

Her mother's number.

She answered instantly.

“Mom?”

A man's voice replied.

“Wrong Hayes.”

Rachel froze.

“Who is this?”

“Ask Caleb about St. Vincent's Hospital.”

Caleb heard.

His face went white.

Rachel looked at him.

“What happened at St. Vincent's?”

Caleb whispered:

“You were born there.”

Rachel stared.

“So?”

Caleb looked toward Enzo.

Enzo lowered his eyes.

Rachel understood that both men knew.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Caleb slowly reached toward the bedside drawer.

Inside was another photograph.

A newborn baby.

Her father held the child.

Beside him stood a much younger Caleb.

Rachel turned it over.

Two names had been written there.

Rachel Hayes.

And beneath it—

Rachel Rossi.

She looked up.

Caleb's eyes were filled with something she had never seen in them before.

Fear.

Then the hospital-room door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Rachel recognized her immediately.

Her mother.

But Margaret wasn't alone.

A man stood behind her with a gun pressed against her back.

And Rachel knew his face from her father's photograph.
