Chapter 10 - Caleb's Last Secret

Rachel laughed.
Nobody joined her.
“No.”
Margaret's eyes filled.
“Rachel—”
“No.”
Margaret explained.
Daniel and Margaret had been unable to have biological children.
Eighteen years earlier, Daniel worked for a Rossi company.
On the night of the explosion that supposedly killed Caleb's family, Daniel discovered something hidden in the chaos.
A baby.
The child belonged to Caleb's older half sister, Lucia, whose existence the Rossi family had concealed because of a bitter inheritance dispute.
Lucia died that night.
Her infant daughter survived.
Daniel and Margaret protected her.
Rachel.
Rachel's knees weakened.
“So I'm a Rossi?”
“By blood,” Margaret said.
Caleb stared at her.
The implications were enormous.
Rachel was his niece.
The realization transformed something between them.
Not romance.
Something stranger and deeper.
Family neither had known remained.
Caleb sat down.
“My sister had a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because Marco wanted every competing heir gone.”
The pieces aligned.
The attack on Caleb.
The attempt on Margaret.
Rachel being spared.
Marco didn't want Rachel dead.
He wanted control of her.
Daniel's evidence included legal documents proving Rachel inherited Lucia's share of several legitimate Rossi companies.
Those companies controlled the shipping terminals Marco needed.
Rachel wasn't merely a witness.
She was the key to his empire.
Caleb looked sick.
“I brought danger to you.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No. Daniel and I brought her into danger the day we decided truth mattered more than fear.”
Rachel walked to the window.
Her entire identity hadn't changed.
She was still Rachel Hayes.
Daniel was still her father.
Margaret was still her mother.
Blood couldn't erase love.
Caleb approached carefully.
“You don't owe my family anything.”
“Our family,” Rachel corrected.
He stopped.
She looked at him.
“I'm not saying I forgive everything.”
“I know.”
“But I'm not running.”
Caleb nodded.
That evening Isabella gave them Marco's last known safe houses.
Enzo traced financial transfers.
Brooks contacted federal investigators Daniel had once trusted.
For the first time, Marco was losing places to hide.
Then Caleb received a message.
A photograph of Pier Nine.
Midnight.
Below it:
BRING THE HEIR.
Rachel read it.
“No.”
Caleb agreed.
“We don't negotiate.”
“That isn't what I meant.”
She looked at him.
“We're going.”
At 11:13 p.m., Rachel discovered one final recording hidden inside Daniel's cache.
Her father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
“If Marco finds Rachel, there is something Caleb must know.”
Rachel called Caleb.
No answer.
She played the recording.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“Marco never wanted the Rossi fortune.”
Rachel frowned.
“He wanted something beneath Pier Nine.”
The recording ended.
Rachel searched old shipping plans.
Pier Nine had been built above prohibition-era tunnels.
One tunnel connected directly to a private vault beneath the riverfront warehouse.
Daniel's ledger wasn't the real prize.
Something else was.
Rachel called Enzo.
“Where's Caleb?”
“He left ten minutes ago.”
“With who?”
Silence.
“Enzo?”
“Isabella.”
Rachel looked at the clock.
11:19.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from Caleb.
Rachel opened it.
Two words.
DON'T FOLLOW.
A second message arrived immediately afterward.
Not from Caleb.
From Isabella.
HE DOESN'T KNOW WHO I REALLY AM.
Rachel stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
May you like
COME ALONE.
And beneath it was a photograph of Caleb kneeling at Pier Nine with a gun against his head.
