Chapter 4 - What Rafe Calder Was Hiding

"Madeline Cross."
Tessa knew the name.
Not personally.
But she'd seen it in a photograph tucked inside one of her father's old medical books.
Thomas Ward had stood beside a younger woman at a hospital fundraiser.
The handwritten label beneath it read:
Thomas and Madeline, 2019.
"She knew my father?"
Elena nodded.
"Better than Rafe knew."
"What does that mean?"
"Madeline wasn't really engaged to my brother because she loved him."
Tessa felt something unexpected.
Jealousy.
Ridiculous.
Rafe had been arrested less than ten minutes ago, someone was threatening to kill him, her father might have been murdered, and somehow a woman from his past still managed to irritate her.
"Why were they engaged?"
"Business."
Tessa stared.
Elena sighed.
"Our family isn't exactly traditional."
"That's one word for it."
"Madeline's father controlled several legitimate shipping contracts Rafe needed after he started moving our businesses away from my father's criminal operations."
"Your father's?"
Elena looked toward the window.
"Our father built the organization Rafe inherited."
"Rafe wanted out?"
"Not entirely. He wanted clean money. Fewer bodies. No narcotics. No trafficking. No hurting civilians."
Tessa absorbed that.
"He still runs a mafia."
"Yes."
"I didn't say he was a saint."
"Good."
"Saint Rafe would be a difficult sell."
Elena smiled.
"Very."
Then she became serious again.
"Madeline was supposed to marry him. Publicly it was romance. Privately it was an alliance."
"And she left him at the altar?"
"Forty minutes before the ceremony."
"Why?"
Elena looked directly at her.
"She said she couldn't marry a man who made her afraid when he walked into a room."
Tessa's anger arrived before she could stop it.
"She said that?"
"To his face."
"That's cruel."
"Rafe told everyone it didn't matter."
"But it did."
"It destroyed him."
Tessa remembered the ballroom.
You don't have to touch me because you feel sorry for me.
Now she understood.
It wasn't only strangers who had taught him to distrust affection.
Someone he expected to marry had told him his very presence frightened her.
"Where is Madeline?"
"Still in the city."
"Then let's go."
Mateo returned from arranging legal counsel.
"Absolutely not."
Tessa turned.
"That seems to be the phrase of the evening."
"Rafe is in custody. That leaves me responsible for your security."
"No, it leaves you responsible for his."
"He specifically instructed—"
"If you finish that sentence with 'keep Tessa safe,' I'm walking out alone."
Mateo stopped.
Elena folded her arms.
"She's serious."
"I noticed."
Mateo sighed.
"Fine. We go together."
They left through a private garage.
Tessa sat in the back with Elena.
Mateo drove.
Two security vehicles followed.
"Where does Madeline live?"
Elena gave the address.
Tessa recognized the neighborhood.
Old wealth.
Gated estates.
The kind of place where every hedge looked professionally disciplined.
They arrived thirty minutes later.
Madeline Cross opened the door herself.
She was in her late thirties, elegant, blonde, and composed.
Until she saw Elena.
Then she dropped the glass in her hand.
"You're dead."
Elena said, "Apparently not."
Madeline backed into the foyer.
"How—"
"We need to talk about Thomas Ward."
Madeline's gaze snapped to Tessa.
"You."
Tessa frowned.
"You know me?"
"I've seen your photograph."
"From my father?"
Madeline closed her eyes.
"Come inside."
They entered.
Mateo remained near the door.
Madeline led them into a study.
On the desk sat three photographs.
One showed Thomas Ward.
One showed Elena.
The third showed Rafe.
Tessa looked at Madeline.
"Start talking."
Madeline sat.
"Your father came to me after Elena's accident."
"Why?"
"Because I had access to financial records through my father."
Elena said, "Records showing payments to the hospital."
Madeline nodded.
"Someone was paying hospital administrators to falsify witness identities."
"Who?" Tessa asked.
"I never found out."
"Then why did you leave Rafe?"
Madeline looked toward his photograph.
"Because they threatened him."
Elena went still.
"What?"
"The day before the wedding, I received photographs of Rafe leaving his house. Eating breakfast. Visiting your grave."
Her voice broke slightly.
"They knew every move he made."
Tessa understood.
"They told you to reject him."
Madeline nodded.
"They said if I married him, he'd be dead before our honeymoon ended."
Elena whispered, "Why didn't you tell him?"
Madeline laughed bitterly.
"Because the note said if I warned him, they'd kill you."
Elena's expression changed.
"They knew I was alive."
"Yes."
Tessa stepped closer.
"And you told Rafe you were afraid of him."
Madeline looked ashamed.
"They told me exactly what to say."
Tessa suddenly hated someone she had never met.
Not Madeline.
Whoever had weaponized the deepest insecurity of a man who already believed people feared him.
"You let him believe that for years."
"I kept him alive."
"You broke him."
"I know."
Silence.
Madeline wiped one tear away.
"He never came near me again."
"Did he know you were connected to my father?"
"No."
"Why would whoever is threatening us send me to you?"
Madeline's eyes sharpened.
"Because Thomas gave me something."
Tessa leaned forward.
"What?"
Madeline stood and walked to a wall safe.
She entered a code.
The door opened.
Inside was a red medical file.
Tessa recognized her father's handwriting immediately.
T. WARD.
Her hands began shaking.
Madeline gave it to her.
"He told me never to open it unless you came asking."
Tessa swallowed.
"My father knew I might come?"
"He said if you did, it meant he'd failed."
The room seemed to shrink.
Tessa opened the file.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Names.
Payment logs.
And a handwritten letter.
Tessa,
If you're reading this, I'm sorry.
Her vision blurred.
She forced herself to continue.
I told you that medicine was about saving the person in front of you. I should have told you that sometimes saving one person means standing against people powerful enough to destroy everything you love.
Elena Calder arrived at my hospital alive.
Someone wanted her declared dead.
I refused.
That choice placed both of us in danger.
I helped her disappear.
But Elena's case exposed something larger.
A network.
People inside hospitals, law enforcement, private security, and organized crime.
At the center is someone close to Rafe Calder.
Someone he trusts.
Tessa stopped.
Mateo went still.
Elena looked at him.
Madeline whispered, "Keep reading."
Tessa continued.
I never learned his full identity.
But I learned the initials he uses on payments.
M.R.
Everyone looked at Mateo Ruiz.
He stared back.
Tessa's heart stopped.
Mateo's initials.
M.R.
His face changed.
"Don't."
Elena stepped backward.
"Mateo."
"It's not me."
Madeline moved toward a drawer.
Mateo immediately raised his hands.
"Don't reach for anything."
Tessa stared.
"Then explain."
"I can't explain initials."
"You were with Rafe three years ago."
"Yes."
"You had access to hospitals?"
"No."
"Security?"
"Obviously."
Elena's voice became cold.
"You helped identify my body."
Mateo looked at her.
"I was there."
"You signed the report."
"Because the hospital said it was you!"
"You never checked?"
"I trusted the records."
Tessa remembered her father's letter.
Someone close to Rafe.
Someone he trusts.
Mateo looked exactly like that person.
Then Tessa's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered on speaker.
A distorted male voice spoke.
"You found the file."
Tessa said nothing.
"Good."
"Who are you?"
"Ask Mateo why he was paid fifty thousand dollars the week Elena died."
Mateo's face changed.
Elena took another step back.
Rafe's security men near the door turned toward their boss.
Tessa stared at Mateo.
"Was he?"
Mateo said nothing.
"Was he?"
"Yes."
Elena whispered, "Oh my God."
Mateo raised both hands.
"But not for what you think."
The distorted voice laughed.
"That's what traitors always say."
The line disconnected.
Mateo reached slowly into his jacket.
Three guns rose toward him.
"Don't," one guard said.
Mateo stopped.
"I have proof."
"Of what?" Tessa asked.
"Where the money came from."
"Then show us."
He removed his phone.
Unlocked it.
Opened an old financial record.
Payment: Calder Holdings.
Authorized by: R. Calder.
Tessa stared.
"Rafe paid you?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Mateo looked at Elena.
"To find you."
Elena stopped breathing.
"Rafe never believed you were dead."
Silence.
Mateo lowered the phone.
"He hired me privately after your funeral. Fifty thousand was the first payment."
Elena's eyes filled.
"He looked for me?"
"For two years."
"Why did he stop?"
Mateo looked away.
"Because someone sent him proof you were dead."
"What proof?"
"A video."
Elena shook her head.
"I never made one."
"I know that now."
Tessa closed her father's file.
"Then M.R. could be someone else."
Mateo nodded.
"There are hundreds of people with those initials."
Madeline whispered, "Not hundreds close to Rafe."
Tessa's phone buzzed.
Another message.
A photograph.
Rafe.
Inside a holding cell.
He was sitting alone on a bench.
The timestamp was current.
Text appeared beneath it.
YOU HAVE THE FILE.
NOW BRING IT TO THE OLD CALDER HOTEL.
COME ALONE.
OR THE NEXT PHOTO WILL SHOW HIS BODY.
Tessa stared at Rafe's image.
Mateo read over her shoulder.
"No."
Elena said, "Obviously not."
Tessa closed the phone.
"I'm going."
Mateo stepped in front of her.
"Absolutely not."
"They have access to a police holding cell."
"Which means this is bigger than we thought."
"Exactly."
"You'll die."
"Maybe."
Rafe's earlier words returned to her.
Standing beside me isn't the safest place in the building.
She finally understood something.
He hadn't been pushing her away because he didn't want her near him.
He had been terrified of what proximity to him might cost her.
Tessa looked at Mateo.
"If I don't go, Rafe might die."
"If you do, you both might."
"Then make sure I'm not actually alone."
Mateo stared.
Then slowly smiled.
"You're starting to think like him."
"No."
She took the red file.
"I'm thinking like a combat nurse."
They prepared a plan.
Tessa would carry a duplicate file.
Mateo would place trackers in her shoes and coat.
Elena would remain in a secure vehicle.
Madeline would contact federal investigators Thomas Ward had once trusted.
Everything was ready.
Then Tessa opened her father's file one last time.
A folded page slipped from the back cover.
She picked it up.
On it was a photograph she had never seen.
Her father stood beside Rafe Calder.
Rafe looked younger.
Maybe twenty-five.
On the back, Thomas had written one sentence.
Tessa, if anything happens to me, trust Rafe.
She stared at it.
Then she noticed something else.
A figure in the background.
A man standing near a hospital doorway.
She recognized him.
Her hand went cold.
"No."
Mateo came closer.
"What?"
Tessa pointed.
The man in the photograph was the police captain who had arrested Rafe.
And behind him, barely visible in the glass reflection, stood someone else.
Someone Tessa had believed dead even longer than Elena Calder.
May you like
Her father.
The photograph was dated six months after Thomas Ward's funeral.
