Chapter 3 - The Three-Word Call

Viper’s triumphant smile faltered. The old man wasn’t reacting correctly. He should be broken, humiliated. Instead, Elias Thorne sat with absolute stillness, the messy remnants of his lunch and the splintered cane on the floor forgotten. His gaze was fixed on Viper, and for the first time, Viper felt a prickle of unease.
Elias slowly reached into the interior pocket of his worn denim shirt, bypassing the leather vest. He didn’t fumble. His movement was fluid, deliberate. He pulled out a worn, black, vintage flip phone. A relic, just like him.
He flipped it open, his thumb moving over the keypad with muscle memory that predated touchscreens. He pressed one button—a speed dial, programmed decades ago. He held the phone to his ear.
The entire diner watched. Viper, confused and suddenly self-conscious, shifted his weight. "Who you calling, Gramps? The nursing home?" His laughter sounded forced, even to his own crew.
Elias waited for the call to connect. His eyes never left Viper's face. The silence stretched.
When the connection was made, Elias spoke. He didn't raise his voice. It was calm, quiet, and carried the weight of absolute authority.
“It’s me.”
A beat of silence on the other end.
“Bring them.”
Elias Thorne closed the phone with a sharp clack and placed it back in his pocket. He then picked up his fork and calmly stabbed a french fry, as if the last five minutes hadn’t happened.

Viper stared. He had just seen a man make a three-word phone call, and yet, the shift in atmosphere was undeniable. The arrogance that had fueled him seconds ago began to evaporate, replaced by a cold, creeping realization. The warnings he had heard—the ones he had dismissed as myth—came back to him. 'Never touch the Old Guard. They don't fight; they remove.'
As captured in the intense close-up of image_3.png, the dynamic had reversed. The bald titan, once the tormentor, now stood looking down at the calm, seated man with an expression of sudden, paralyzing dread. The hunter was now the prey.
