Chapter 2 - The Fracture

Viper stood up, the blackthorn cane balanced in his oversized palm. He looked at Elias as if he were a specimen under glass. The silence in the diner was total now. The other customers watched, paralyzed. Even the waitress, a young woman named Sarah, froze near the counter.

"This?" Viper asked, turning the polished wood over. "This is what you need? Old man, you shouldn't be out without a keeper."

He began to walk in a slow circle around Elias’s booth. "See, we heard stories. About the Old Guard. Legends. Ghosts." He stopped right beside Elias, his huge, tattooed forearm inches from Elias’s face. "But looking at you... shaking hands, needing a stick... the stories are just garbage. You’re just another relic waiting to break."

Viper looked at his men. The laughter was cruel, encouragement for the next act.

Viper grinned broader, locking eyes with Elias. He held the cane horizontally, gripping both ends.

Then, he raised his massive right leg, planted his boot firmly on the diner bench, and brought the blackthorn cane down with sudden, explosive force across his own tree-trunk-like knee.

CRACK.

The sound was not a simple snap; it was a violent splintering that echoed through the small building like a gunshot. Shards of ancient blackthorn exploded outward, bouncing off the ceiling and Elias’s table.

The impact of the sound was instantaneous. Sarah the waitress, as seen in the background of image_2.png, instinctively covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide with shock and horror at the gratuitous display of cruelty.

The other Iron Skulls roared their approval. Viper threw the two jagged halves onto the floor, right at Elias’s boots. "There," he spat, leaning down. "Now you match."

The physical cane was broken. But as Viper stared down, expecting tears or pleading, he saw something else. Elias Thorne wasn’t looking at the broken wood. He was looking through Viper.

Elias’s trembling left hand had stopped. It was resting flat on the messy table, now rock steady. The silence that followed the snap was different. The weakness Viper thought he saw was gone, replaced by a cold, radiating stillness that suddenly felt far more dangerous than any shout.
