Chapter 9 - The Man Who Made My Father Disappear

The voice behind me was calm.
Too calm.
Everyone in the chapel turned.
My hand tightened around the photograph.
Because the person standing in the doorway wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't an enemy wearing a mask.
It wasn't someone I had spent years hunting.
It was someone who had been standing beside me my entire life.
Marco Rizzi.
My security chief.
My father's most trusted man.
My protector.
The man who had just told me he didn't know what happened to my father.
The man who had lied.
Again.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavier than any weapon.
Marco stood in the doorway.
His face was different.
Not because he looked guilty.
Because he looked tired.
Like he had been carrying this moment for twelve years.
"Marco."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the warning.
He stepped inside.
"Alessandro..."
"Don't."
I raised the photograph.
"You were there."
His eyes moved to the picture.
Then back to me.
"Yes."
The answer shocked me.
Not because I didn't expect it.
Because he admitted it so easily.
No excuses.
No denial.
Just the truth.
"You were with my father the night he disappeared."
Marco nodded.
"Yes."
"And you let me believe he was dead."
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
"I let you believe what your father wanted you to believe."
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
I looked around the chapel.
"My father wanted this."
"My father wanted that."
"Everyone keeps using his name to justify lying to me."
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Marco walked closer.
"Your father knew the truth would destroy you."
I stared at him.
"You don't know me."
His eyes lowered.
"I knew you before you became Alessandro Moretti."
That sentence stopped me.
Because it was true.
Marco had been there before the power.
Before the reputation.
Before people feared saying my name.
He had seen me as a child.
Not a leader.
Not a weapon.
Just a son.
"What happened that night?"
Marco looked toward Isabella.
Then my mother.
Then me.
"Your father discovered who was responsible for the betrayal."
"Luciano?"
Marco shook his head.
"No."
The answer surprised me.
"Then who?"
He didn't speak.
And I knew.
The answer was worse.
Because Marco wasn't afraid of Luciano.
He was afraid of saying another name.
"Say it."
His jaw tightened.
"Your father discovered that the person who betrayed him was someone inside his closest circle."
I stepped forward.
"Who?"
Marco looked at me.
"Someone you trusted."
My heartbeat increased.
"Who?"
Before he answered, Isabella spoke.
"Alessandro."
I turned.
She looked terrified.
Not for herself.
For me.
"Don't make him say it here."
That confused me.
"Why?"
Because then Marco said something I never expected.
"Because once you hear it, there is no going back."
I stared at him.
"There was never going back."
The room became silent.
Marco closed his eyes.
Then he finally said the name.
"The person your father feared..."
A pause.
"The person who destroyed everything..."
Another pause.
"Was your uncle Luciano's partner."
I frowned.
"Partner?"
Marco nodded.
"Someone who worked with Luciano."
"Who?"
He looked directly at me.
"Someone who had access to your father's entire operation."
I waited.
Then:
"Your grandfather's old adviser."
The words meant nothing.
Until they did.
Because I knew exactly who he meant.
The man who had attended every family event.
The man who had given me advice after my father died.
The man who had told me to stay strong.
The man who had stood beside my family for decades.
"Victor Hale."
Nobody moved.
My mother covered her mouth.
Isabella looked down.
Because she knew the name.
"He's alive?" I asked.
Marco nodded.
"And he has been watching you."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Why?"
Marco looked at the photograph in my hand.
"Because your father left something behind."
"The inheritance."
Marco nodded.
"Not money."
"Then what?"
He looked at Isabella.
She answered.
"The truth."
I stared at her.
"What truth?"
She stepped closer.
"Your father discovered that your family empire wasn't built the way you were told."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means your grandfather wasn't the founder."
The room went silent.
I looked at Marco.
He nodded slowly.
"Your father discovered old records."
"What records?"
"Documents proving that the Moretti family had been manipulated for decades."
I looked at the photograph.
My father.
Luciano.
Victor.
All connected.
All part of something bigger.
"What does Victor want?"
Marco's expression became darker.
"Control."
"Over what?"
"The Moretti name."
I almost smiled.
"That's impossible."
"No."
Marco shook his head.
"Because there is one thing you don't know."
"What?"
He looked at me.
"Your father didn't leave the empire to you."
I froze.
"What?"
Marco continued.
"He left the decision to someone else."
My mind went through everything.
The companies.
The properties.
The accounts.
Everything I had inherited.
"Who?"
Marco looked toward Isabella.
She looked away.
And that scared me.
Because Isabella knew.
"Who has control?"
Marco answered quietly.
"The person your father trusted most."
The room went silent.
"Who?"
Marco looked at my mother.
My heart stopped.
"No."
My mother closed her eyes.
"Alessandro..."
"No."
I stepped back.
"You're saying my father left everything to my mother?"
Marco shook his head.
"Not Lucia."
I stared.
"Then who?"
Marco reached into his jacket.
He removed a small key.
Old.
Metal.
Worn.
He placed it on the table.
"Your father left one final instruction."
I looked at the key.
"What does it open?"
Marco looked at me.
"The place where he hid the truth."
My fingers moved toward it.
But before I touched it, my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One picture.
My blood froze.
It showed Emma.
Standing outside the mansion.
Alone.
The message appeared beneath it.
Bring the key to the old warehouse.
Another message followed.
Or the girl disappears like your father did.
I looked up.
Everyone saw my face change.
Marco immediately understood.
"What happened?"
I showed him the screen.
His expression turned cold.
Because beneath the message was one final line.
You have one hour, Alessandro.
May you like
And then the sender's name appeared.
Luciano Moretti.
