Chapter 4 - The Recording My Father Hid

The first image appeared.

And I forgot how to breathe.

My father was standing inside the old Moretti library.

Twelve years earlier.

Before the empire had grown.

Before I became the man everyone feared.

Before I learned that trust could be more dangerous than any enemy.

My father, Antonio Moretti, stood beside the same wooden desk where I had once signed my first major business agreement.

But something was different.

He looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

My father had always been the strongest person I knew.

People called him untouchable.

A man who survived wars between families.

A man who built his name through loyalty and fear.

But in that recording, he looked like someone who had been carrying a secret alone for too long.

I stepped closer to the monitor.

"Turn up the audio."

Marco adjusted the system.

Static filled the room.

Then my father's voice came through.

"If you are watching this..."

The recording paused.

My heart tightened.

Because my father was speaking to whoever found it.

Not a random recording.

A message.

A warning.

"If you are watching this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen."

Nobody moved.

My mother stood behind me.

I could feel her presence.

But she didn't speak.

That worried me.

Because Lucia Moretti was not a woman who stayed silent when something was wrong.

Unless she already knew what was coming.

My father's image continued.

"I spent my life protecting my family."

He looked directly into the camera.

"But there are some things protection cannot erase."

The room became colder.

I watched the man who had taught me everything.

How to negotiate.

How to fight.

How to survive.

And now he was telling me there was something he had hidden.

"I made mistakes."

Those words shocked me more than anything else.

My father admitting failure was something I had never seen.

Not once.

"I trusted the wrong people."

The recording shook slightly.

Like someone had moved the camera.

Then my father looked toward the door.

Fear crossed his face.

Real fear.

I had never seen that expression from him.

Not when enemies threatened him.

Not when his businesses were attacked.

Not even when he knew he was dying.

Only now.

Only in a recording he had hidden.

"Antonio?" my mother whispered.

Everyone turned.

Because she had said his name like she was hearing his voice again.

Not like she was watching an old video.

Like she was remembering a moment she never wanted to relive.

I looked at her.

"Mom."

She didn't answer.

"How long have you known about this?"

Her eyes stayed on the screen.

"I didn't know."

That answer came too quickly.

I didn't believe it.

"Mom."

She finally looked at me.

And for the first time in my entire life, I saw fear in my mother's eyes.

"Your father wanted this hidden."

"From who?"

She looked at the screen.

"From everyone."

That wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

The recording continued.

My father placed a small black folder on the desk.

I immediately recognized it.

It was the same type of folder my father used for information that could destroy people.

Names.

Evidence.

Secrets.

"Inside this folder is the reason I could not tell Alessandro the truth."

My name.

My father had said my name.

Everyone looked at me.

The recording continued.

"If my son ever finds this..."

My father's expression changed.

"He will think I betrayed him."

I stepped back.

Because somehow, even after twelve years, my father knew exactly how I would feel.

"You didn't betray me," I whispered.

But the recording kept going.

"You will want answers."

A pause.

"You will want revenge."

Another pause.

"But revenge will blind you."

My hands tightened.

Because my father knew me.

He knew exactly what kind of man I had become.

"You need to understand something, Alessandro."

The room became silent.

"Not everyone who hurt you was your enemy."

I stared at the screen.

"What does that mean?"

No one answered.

My father reached toward the folder.

But before he opened it, the recording glitched.

The screen distorted.

The image froze.

Then changed.

A different camera angle appeared.

Someone else had entered the room.

A woman.

My mother.

Twelve years younger.

She was crying.

I stopped.

Because I had never seen my mother cry like that.

Not at my father's funeral.

Not when I left home.

Not when she watched me take over the family.

Never.

My mother in the recording grabbed my father's arm.

"Antonio, you can't do this."

His expression softened.

"I have to."

"You don't understand what they will do."

"They already tried."

The words hit me.

Tried.

Someone had already tried something.

"What are they talking about?" Sophia whispered.

Nobody answered.

The recording continued.

My father looked at my mother.

"Lucia, if anything happens to me..."

"Don't say that."

"If anything happens to me, Alessandro cannot know."

My chest tightened.

"Cannot know what?"

My father's voice became quieter.

"That the person closest to him is the reason everything started."

The screen froze.

The room went completely silent.

Everyone looked at each other.

The person closest to me.

My mind moved through every name.

Friends.

Partners.

Family.

Then one name appeared immediately.

Isabella.

But my father said this twelve years ago.

Before Isabella.

Before the wedding.

Before she entered my life.

So who was he talking about?

Marco moved toward the computer.

"The recording has another file."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"There is a second video attached."

"Open it."

He hesitated.

"Boss..."

"Open it."

The second file loaded.

The timestamp appeared.

One year earlier.

The day Isabella first met me.

My expression changed.

"Why would my father have a recording from that day?"

Marco didn't answer.

The footage started.

It showed a restaurant.

A private room.

Isabella was sitting across from someone.

Someone I recognized.

My heart stopped.

Because it was the same man from the hidden camera.

The man who had spoken to my mother.

The man who said the wedding was important.

The man who had been watching my life before I ever met him.

Marco zoomed in.

The man's face became clearer.

Sophia gasped.

"No..."

I turned.

"You know him?"

Her hands covered her mouth.

"I thought he was gone."

"Who is he?"

She looked at the screen.

Her voice barely came out.

"That is..."

Before she could finish, the lights in the security room suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Emma screamed.

Sophia grabbed her.

Marco reached for his weapon.

Then every monitor turned back on at once.

But the footage was gone.

Replaced by a single message.

White letters on a black screen.

STOP SEARCHING FOR THE PAST.

A second line appeared.

OR YOUR DAUGHTER WILL PAY FOR IT.

Sophia froze.

I looked at Emma.

She wasn't the target anymore.

She was the warning.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One new message.

I opened it.

May you like

And the name attached to the message was one I never expected to see.

Your father’s killer wants to meet you.
