Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Warning

The video ended before Grace named him.

The rest was corrupted.

Ethan stared at the frozen image.

Maria holding newborn Lily.

Grace beside her.

Date stamped three years earlier.

Grace had supposedly been dead five years.

“That date is false,” Ethan said.

Daniel examined the metadata.

“No.”

Ethan looked at him.

“My mother was dead.”

“The video timestamp could have been manipulated.”

“Could?”

“Yes.”

Ethan called Maria.

He did not mention the video.

“Did you know Grace after her death?”

Silence.

That was enough.

“Maria.”

“I can explain.”

“Then do it.”

“Not over the phone.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Another secret.

He was beginning to understand that betrayal did not always come from cruelty.

Sometimes it came from people who loved you and decided they knew which truths you could survive.

He hated both versions.

Richard survived the shooting and was transported under police guard.

Ethan returned to Northstar.

Maria waited in Grace’s old cardigan.

Lily slept nearby.

Ethan placed the phone on the table and played the video.

Maria’s face crumpled.

“She made me promise.”

“She was alive?”

“For two years after you thought she died.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“No.”

“Ethan—”

“I buried her.”

“You buried an empty coffin.”

He stood so quickly the chair fell.

Vanessa stepped back.

Ethan stared at Maria.

“My mother let me believe she was dead?”

“She was dying.”

“That doesn’t answer me.”

“Richard’s people had threatened you. Grace believed disappearing was the only way to finish Orion without putting you in danger.”

Ethan walked to the window.

Manhattan spread beneath him.

For five years he had mourned a woman who had chosen to vanish.

“She watched me grieve.”

Maria cried.

“She watched you live.”

“That’s supposed to make it better?”

“No.”

Maria did not defend Grace.

That helped.

“She died three years ago,” Maria said. “For real. I was there.”

“And Lily?”

“Grace loved her.”

“Why?”

Maria looked toward her daughter.

“Because Lily was born while Grace was hiding.”

“That still doesn’t explain the amendment.”

Maria frowned.

“What amendment?”

“Richard said Grace made Lily a beneficiary.”

Maria looked genuinely stunned.

“I knew nothing about that.”

“Who is Lily’s father?”

Maria’s expression closed.

Ethan saw it.

“Christian?”

“No.”

“Michael?”

“No.”

“Richard?”

Maria looked horrified.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“His name was Samuel Reyes.”

“Was?”

“He died before Lily was born.”

Ethan searched Maria’s face.

“Why would Grace say Lily needed to know who her father really was?”

Maria began to answer.

Lily woke.

“Mommy?”

Maria immediately went to her.

Ethan stopped pressing.

A child should not learn family secrets from an interrogation.

Daniel entered with news.

Michael had been located.

His abandoned car was found near Rosewood Manor.

Christian had also accessed the estate’s old service tunnels.

“They’re preparing something there,” Daniel said.

Ethan looked at the message.

BRING THE GIRL TO ROSEWOOD.

“No.”

He would not use Lily as bait.

Maria surprised him.

“We should go.”

“Absolutely not.”

“They will keep coming for her.”

“I’ll protect her.”

“You can’t put her in a locked room for the rest of her life.”

“She’s three.”

“And she deserves to stop being hunted.”

Ethan stared at Maria.

“We do this on our terms.”

Daniel began building a plan.

Federal agents were already examining Orion’s evidence.

The hidden account had been frozen.

Michael’s financial access had been revoked.

Christian’s network privileges were collapsing one system at a time.

They were becoming desperate.

That made them dangerous.

Vanessa approached Ethan privately.

“You don’t have to forgive me.”

“I know.”

“I’m going to testify.”

“Against Richard?”

“Against everyone.”

“That may include you.”

“I know.”

Ethan studied her.

The woman before him was not the woman he thought he had proposed to.

But perhaps she was finally becoming someone real.

“Why?”

“Because Lily did what I was too afraid to do.”

“What?”

“Told the truth before it was safe.”

That stayed with him.

At dusk, they prepared to leave for Rosewood.

Lily would remain in an armored vehicle with Maria and federal agents, nowhere near the building.

Ethan would enter.

Vanessa insisted on joining him.

Daniel hated the idea.

Ethan allowed it.

Not because he trusted her completely.

Because Christian believed he still controlled her.

Rosewood Manor looked ghostly without guests.

The flowers from the abandoned wedding remained.

White roses had begun to wilt.

Ethan walked down the same aisle where Lily had stopped him.

His mother’s empty chair remained in front.

A phone sat on it.

It rang.

Ethan answered.

Christian.

“You brought Lily?”

“No.”

“Then Maria suffers.”

“You can’t reach her.”

Christian laughed.

“You still think this is about access.”

“What do you want?”

“The amendment.”

“I don’t have it.”

“Michael does.”

“Then ask Michael.”

Silence.

Ethan understood.

“Michael betrayed you.”

Christian’s voice hardened.

“Michael serves himself.”

“Where is he?”

“Looking for the same thing you are.”

“The amendment?”

“No.”

A pause.

“The proof of Lily’s identity.”

Ethan looked toward Vanessa.

“What identity?”

Christian laughed softly.

“You really don’t know.”

“Know what?”

“Ask Maria why Grace spent the last two years of her life protecting a baby who wasn’t born yet.”

The line disconnected.

Ethan turned.

A sound came from behind the altar.

Daniel raised his weapon.

A hidden door stood slightly open.

They entered a service corridor.

At the end was a small room.

Inside they found Michael’s jacket.

Blood on the floor.

And Grace’s original marital agreement.

Ethan opened it.

The final page contained his mother’s handwriting.

Upon Ethan’s lawful marriage, control of the Orion trust shall pass not to his spouse, but to the child legally designated in Attachment C.

Attachment C was missing.

Vanessa whispered, “Lily.”

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Ethan turned.

Michael stood in the doorway.

Bleeding.

Terrified.

He raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

Daniel aimed at him.

“On your knees.”

Michael obeyed.

“Christian has Lily.”

Ethan’s blood froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“He switched the federal vehicle.”

Ethan grabbed his phone.

No signal.

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

“He jammed the estate.”

“Where is she?”

Michael pointed toward the old chapel wing.

“He took Maria too.”

Ethan ran.

At the end of the corridor stood a locked white door.

From the other side came Lily’s crying voice.

“Mr. Ethan!”

He reached for the handle.

May you like

Then Maria screamed.

“Ethan, don’t open it! He has—”
