Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Perfect Lie

Daniel hit the emergency release.

Nothing happened.

Christian had sealed the vault.

Onscreen, the shadow moved closer to Lily.

Ethan grabbed a steel chair and smashed it into the lock housing.

Again.

Again.

Vanessa found the manual fire release behind a panel.

“Here!”

Daniel pulled it.

The vault opened six inches.

Enough.

They forced it wider.

Daniel called Northstar security while running.

“No visual on intruder. Lock the medical level now.”

They reached the car.

Ethan watched the live feed.

The hand disappeared from the frame.

Maria suddenly turned.

She looked toward the open door.

Then she stood and walked out of view.

“Maria, don’t.”

Ethan knew she could not hear him.

The feed went black.

At Northstar, security officers met them.

Maria and Lily were safe.

The intruder had escaped.

“What happened?” Ethan demanded.

Maria looked shaken.

“I heard someone.”

“Did you see him?”

“No.”

“But he left this.”

She handed Ethan a photograph.

Grace Cole stood beside a younger Maria.

Maria could not have been older than nineteen.

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew my mother.”

Maria nodded.

“Before I knew you.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

Vanessa sat silently.

Ethan’s anger rose.

“Everyone in my life seems to have made promises to my mother except me.”

Maria flinched.

He regretted the harshness immediately.

“Tell me.”

Maria sat.

“When I was nineteen, my mother died. I was taking classes at community college and cleaning offices at night.”

Like Grace.

“One night, a woman found me crying in a supply closet.”

“Grace.”

Maria smiled faintly.

“She sat on an upside-down bucket and cried with me.”

That sounded exactly like his mother.

“She helped me finish school. When I became pregnant with Lily years later and her father left, Grace helped again.”

“Why did she make you trustee?”

“I didn’t know she did.”

Ethan believed her.

“Did she tell you about Orion?”

“No.”

“Richard?”

“Once.”

Maria hesitated.

“She said there was a man who believed money could turn every human relationship into a transaction.”

Ethan looked toward Vanessa.

She accepted the judgment silently.

Maria continued.

“Grace said the only way to defeat someone like that was to find a person who couldn’t be bought.”

“And she chose you.”

“I suppose.”

Ethan sat back.

His mother had trusted Maria years before Ethan ever employed her.

Had Maria’s application to his household been coincidence?

“No,” Maria admitted.

“Grace sent you?”

“She asked me to watch over you.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“For four years?”

“She asked me to make sure you ate.”

Despite everything, Daniel almost smiled.

Maria’s eyes filled.

“She worried money had made you lonely.”

Ethan looked away.

That part hurt more than the fraud.

Vanessa stood.

“I need to tell you something.”

Ethan’s patience thinned.

“What now?”

“My relationship with Christian.”

“You said the photograph was staged.”

“It was.”

“But?”

“He expected me to become your wife and then leave you.”

“After stealing from me.”

“Yes.”

“And you planned to?”

“At first.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Thank you for finally saying it.”

Vanessa’s tears fell.

“I changed my mind months ago.”

“Yet you kept lying.”

“Because getting out wasn’t simple.”

“It rarely is.”

“I tried to change the prenuptial agreement.”

Ethan frowned.

His attorneys had mentioned Vanessa requested revisions.

He had assumed she wanted more.

“What did you change?”

“The marital asset provision.”

“To benefit me?”

“To make the transfers impossible.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Check.”

Daniel pulled the agreement.

After several minutes, he nodded.

“She’s telling the truth.”

Vanessa had inserted a clause freezing major joint transfers for ninety days after marriage.

Ethan had signed without noticing because his own attorneys had called the change harmless.

Christian’s plan would have failed.

“Why didn’t Christian know?”

“He did.”

Vanessa touched her injured shoulder.

“That’s why he came after me.”

Ethan stared at her.

Trust did not return.

But certainty shifted.

Vanessa had betrayed Christian before Lily ever ran down the aisle.

She had simply been too frightened to confess everything.

Daniel’s computer sounded.

“Orion just found another account.”

They gathered around.

The $312 million hidden account was not Ethan’s stolen money.

It was the original criminal capital plus decades of investment growth.

Grace had isolated it.

Never spent it.

Never allowed Northstar to benefit from it.

“What happens to it?” Ethan asked.

“According to Orion, it gets transferred into federal escrow when the evidence package completes.”

Ethan felt something loosen in his chest.

His company was not built on stolen money after all.

Grace had protected him.

But Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“Evidence upload is only ninety-four percent.”

“Why?”

“One missing file.”

“Which?”

Daniel read.

ORIGINAL LEDGER — R. VALE.

Maria whispered, “Richard’s ledger.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I know where it is.”

Everyone turned.

“My father kept a black notebook in a safe at his house.”

“Where?”

“Connecticut.”

Daniel checked security intelligence.

“Richard’s house has been empty for years.”

“No,” Vanessa said. “The public house is empty.”

She gave them another address.

An old hunting lodge outside Litchfield.

Ethan prepared to leave.

Maria touched his arm.

“Don’t go alone.”

“I won’t.”

Vanessa said, “I’m coming.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You don’t owe me trust,” she said. “But I owe you the truth.”

Before he could answer, Lily woke.

She rubbed her eyes.

“Mr. Ethan?”

He crouched.

“Yes?”

She held out a drawing.

The same house.

The same yellow sun.

Three figures holding hands.

But now Ethan noticed something he had missed before.

One figure was tall.

One was a woman.

One was Lily.

“Who is this?” he asked, pointing at the man.

Lily pointed at Ethan.

“And this?”

She pointed at Maria.

Maria’s face flushed.

Ethan said nothing.

Lily yawned.

“You’re sad.”

“A little.”

She put the drawing in his hand.

“You can keep it.”

“Thank you.”

Then she whispered something that made Maria go rigid.

“The scary man has Mommy’s picture.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What scary man?”

“The man from Miss Vanessa’s room.”

“You saw him?”

Lily nodded.

“Could you recognize him?”

Another nod.

Daniel opened Richard Vale’s photograph.

“This man?”

Lily shook her head.

Vanessa opened Christian’s old photograph.

“This man?”

Again, Lily shook her head.

Ethan frowned.

“Then who?”

Lily pointed toward the glass wall behind him.

Everyone turned.

A television displayed Northstar’s executive leadership photographs.

Lily walked toward it.

Her tiny finger rose.

She touched one face.

Ethan’s chief financial officer.

Michael Trent.

Lily whispered, “That’s the man.”

At that exact moment, Michael’s office door opened at the end of the corridor.

And he was holding a gun.
