Chapter 12 - The Trap at Rosewood Manor

Thomas Cole was alive.

Ethan flew to Ohio the following morning.

Grace came despite the letter saying alone.

“I’ve obeyed enough mysterious instructions for one lifetime,” Ethan told her.

Maria and Lily remained safely in New York.

The address led to a modest house outside Dayton.

Thomas opened the door.

He was seventy.

Ethan recognized his own eyes.

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then Thomas hugged him.

Ethan stood stiffly.

Twenty-three years could not disappear because biology asked nicely.

Thomas understood.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan stepped inside.

Grace entered.

Thomas stared at her.

“Gracie.”

She slapped him.

Then hugged him.

Both cried.

Ethan watched.

His family had become absurd.

Thomas explained that Margaret forced him to disappear after he found evidence of the laundering network.

Richard secretly helped him escape.

“Richard?”

“He wasn’t always brave,” Thomas said. “But he wasn’t always evil either.”

Thomas stayed hidden because Margaret continued monitoring Grace and Ethan.

When Northstar became successful, the danger increased.

“Why didn’t you contact me after Margaret was arrested?”

“I did.”

“The letter?”

“Yes.”

“And what doesn’t Mom know?”

Thomas looked at Grace.

“That Richard funded Orion.”

Grace stared.

“No.”

“He did.”

Richard had secretly provided the money and infrastructure Grace used to isolate the criminal funds.

He had spent years trying to undo what he helped create.

“He wanted redemption,” Thomas said.

Ethan thought of Richard bleeding in the lodge.

People were rarely one thing.

That did not erase their crimes.

But truth was more complicated than vengeance.

Thomas handed Ethan a box.

Inside were letters written every year since he disappeared.

Birthday letters.

Graduation letters.

A letter congratulating Ethan when he sold his first company.

None had been sent.

Ethan sat for hours reading them.

He did not forgive his father that day.

But he listened.

Sometimes that was the first step.

Before leaving, Thomas gave Grace a small key.

“What is it?” Ethan asked.

Grace laughed through tears.

“The last secret.”

Ethan groaned.

“No more secrets.”

“This one is good.”

The key belonged to a safety deposit box.

Inside was Grace’s original plan for the foundation.

Not just financial documents.

A handwritten mission.

Affordable childcare centers.

Emergency grants for single parents.

Scholarships.

Housing.

Medical support.

Ethan read it twice.

“This is what you wanted Orion to become?”

Grace nodded.

“I wanted dirty money to do something clean.”

Ethan smiled.

“Then we’ll finish it.”

Back in New York, federal prosecutors announced charges against Margaret, Michael, Christian, Richard, and several others.

Vanessa accepted a cooperation agreement.

She faced consequences for fraud-related conduct but avoided the most serious charges because she had sabotaged the transfer plan and provided evidence.

Ethan did not interfere.

He neither saved nor punished her.

For once, money did not decide the outcome.

Three days later, he visited Maria’s apartment.

She opened the door looking surprised.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Ethan.”

She smiled.

“That may take practice.”

Lily ran toward him.

“Mr. Ethan!”

“Apparently it’ll take practice for both of you.”

Lily held up a new drawing.

House.

Sun.

Three figures.

Ethan looked at Maria.

She blushed.

“Children draw things.”

“I’ve heard.”

He crouched.

“Who are they?”

Lily pointed.

“Mommy. Me. You.”

“Why me?”

She considered the question.

“Because you’re lonely.”

Maria closed her eyes in embarrassment.

Ethan laughed.

Lily continued.

“And Mommy is lonely.”

“Lily.”

“And Bunny.”

“Is Bunny lonely?”

“No. Bunny has me.”

Ethan looked at Maria.

Something quiet passed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something more cautious.

Trust.

The thing Ethan had spent years believing money could never buy.

Because it couldn’t.

He left after dinner.

On the sidewalk, Grace called.

“You sound happy.”

“I had spaghetti.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“I know.”

“Maria?”

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Do not manipulate my romantic life from beyond the grave again.”

Grace laughed.

“I’m technically not beyond it anymore.”

He smiled.

Then another call came in.

Daniel.

“Ethan, you need to see this.”

At Northstar, Daniel showed him newly recovered footage from Rosewood.

It was recorded before the wedding.

Christian entered the chapel.

Michael followed.

Then someone else.

Vanessa.

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

She handed Christian something.

“What is that?”

Daniel enhanced the image.

A small black device.

The same model used to access Northstar’s master systems.

Vanessa had told them she stopped helping Christian months ago.

The footage was dated the morning of the wedding.

Ethan stared.

Then Daniel played the audio.

Vanessa said, “He can never know what this really opens.”

Christian answered, “He won’t.”

Vanessa looked directly toward the hidden camera.

May you like

And whispered:

“Because if Ethan learns what’s inside, Grace’s entire story falls apart.”
