Chapter 7 - The Last Betrayal At The Gate

The message ended.

But the danger had only begun.

Adrian Romano stood inside the abandoned warehouse, staring at the phone in his hand.

The voice was gone.

The threat remained.

Give me the child, and this ends.

For years, Adrian had heard threats from men who wanted money, power, territory, or revenge.

Every threat followed the same pattern.

They wanted something.

They believed they could take it.

They believed fear would make him surrender.

But this time was different.

This time, the person on the other end of the phone did not want his empire.

They wanted Zoe.

And that made Adrian more dangerous than ever.

Because for the first time in his life, he was not fighting for himself.

He was fighting for someone who had nothing.

No power.

No influence.

No protection.

Just a little girl with a teddy bear and the courage to tell the truth.

Luca watched Adrian carefully.

“What do we do?”

Adrian placed the phone on the table.

“We find out who is behind this.”

Marco, still sitting in the chair, laughed quietly.

A weak, broken laugh.

“You still don’t understand.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Understand what?”

Marco lifted his eyes.

“This isn’t about Zoe.”

The room became silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Marco swallowed.

For the first time, the confidence disappeared completely.

“You think someone wants revenge against you.”

A pause.

“You think someone wants control of Chicago.”

Another pause.

“But they want something older.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

Marco looked away.

“I don’t know everything.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Then tell me what you know.”

Marco remained silent.

Adrian leaned closer.

“You betrayed me.”

Silence.

“You endangered my people.”

Another pause.

“You used my trust.”

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“So don’t pretend you still have something to protect.”

Marco closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then finally:

“Your father.”

The words changed the room.

Luca looked at Adrian.

Adrian did not move.

“My father has been dead for years.”

Marco nodded.

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Marco looked toward the floor.

“Before he died, your father created something.”

“What?”

“A network.”

Adrian said nothing.

Marco continued.

“Not businesses. Not weapons. Not territory.”

His voice became quieter.

“Information.”

The room grew colder.

Adrian understood immediately.

Information was more valuable than money.

A person could lose money and recover.

A person could lose power and rebuild.

But secrets?

Secrets could destroy entire families.

“Where is it?”

Marco shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I never saw it.”

Marco looked up.

“But someone believes Zoe saw something connected to it.”

Adrian frowned.

“Zoe?”

Marco nodded.

“The night you came home… she wasn’t supposed to be there.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“She was cleaning my shoes.”

“Yes.”

Marco looked uncomfortable.

“She was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

No.

That was not true.

Zoe was not in the wrong place.

She was the only person who saw the right thing.

The only person who noticed.

The only person brave enough to speak.

Adrian turned away.

“Take him.”

Luca nodded.

The guards moved toward Marco.

But before they left, Adrian stopped them.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian stared at Marco.

“You said someone believes she saw something.”

Marco nodded.

“Who?”

Marco hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone inside your family.”

The answer hit harder than any weapon.

Inside.

Not an enemy outside.

Not a rival.

Family.

Adrian walked away without another word.

Two hours later, he returned to the mansion.

The place was heavily guarded.

Every entrance.

Every window.

Every hallway.

Nobody moved without permission.

But despite all the security, Adrian felt something he had not felt in years.

Uncertainty.

Because enemies outside could be fought.

Enemies inside were different.

They knew where you slept.

They knew who you loved.

They knew what you protected.

When Adrian entered the main hall, he saw Zoe sitting on the staircase.

Waiting.

She immediately stood.

“You came back.”

Adrian stopped.

“Yes.”

She looked relieved.

A small smile appeared.

“I knew you would.”

Those words affected him more than he expected.

Because trust was rare.

Especially for him.

He walked closer.

“Where is your mother?”

“Sleeping.”

“Good.”

Zoe looked at his face.

“You look angry.”

Adrian paused.

Children were dangerous because they noticed things adults ignored.

“I am.”

“Because of the bad people?”

“Yes.”

She thought for a moment.

Then asked:

“Are you going to become like them?”

The question stopped him.

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“Bad people hurt others because they are angry.”

She held her teddy bear tighter.

“Mama says anger can make good people do bad things.”

For a moment, Adrian saw himself through a child’s eyes.

Not as a feared leader.

Not as a powerful man.

Just a person standing at a crossroads.

He had spent years using anger as fuel.

But maybe anger was never the problem.

Maybe what mattered was what a person chose to do with it.

“No,” Adrian finally said.

“I’m not going to become like them.”

Zoe studied him.

Then nodded.

“I believe you.”

Before Adrian could answer, the mansion alarm suddenly activated.

Not a warning.

An emergency alert.

Luca rushed into the hall.

“Sir.”

Adrian immediately knew.

“What happened?”

Luca looked toward the front gate.

“The security system detected someone entering.”

“Who?”

Luca hesitated.

That was enough.

“Show me.”

The main security screen activated.

The front gate camera displayed a figure standing outside.

A woman.

Adrian stepped closer.

His expression changed.

Because he knew her.

It was Isabella Romano.

His aunt.

His father’s younger sister.

The woman who had raised him after his mother died.

The woman who had told him family was the only thing he could trust.

Luca looked at him.

“She says she needs to speak with you.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then at Zoe.

The timing was impossible.

The message.

The betrayal.

The secrets.

And now his family member appeared at his gate.

“Let her in.”

Luca looked surprised.

“Sir?”

Adrian’s eyes remained on the screen.

“If she wanted me dead, she would not stand at the front gate.”

A pause.

“But keep everyone ready.”

The gate opened.

Isabella entered slowly.

She looked older than Adrian remembered.

Tired.

Worried.

Afraid.

Not the fear of someone facing danger.

The fear of someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

When she entered the hall, her eyes immediately found Zoe.

And Adrian noticed.

That small reaction.

The recognition.

The concern.

“You know her,” Adrian said.

Isabella froze.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“How?”

Isabella looked at Zoe.

Then back at him.

“Because I know why she was targeted.”

Silence.

Zoe stepped closer to Adrian.

Isabella took a breath.

“The night your father died…”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What about it?”

Isabella looked toward the drawing sitting on the table.

The child’s drawing.

The one that started everything.

Then she said the words Adrian never expected to hear.

“Your father didn’t leave you an empire.”

A pause.

“He left you a warning.”

Adrian stared at her.

“What warning?”

Isabella’s eyes filled with regret.

“The person who betrayed him…”

Her voice became quieter.

“Was never outside the family.”

The mansion fell silent.

Because suddenly, every suspicion Adrian had carried was no longer a possibility.

It was a reality.

May you like

The enemy had always been inside.

And now Adrian had to discover which person he loved had been waiting to destroy him.
