Chapter 6 - The Mafia Boss Who Chose Mercy

Adrian Romano had spent most of his life believing one thing.
Fear was the strongest weapon a man could possess.
Fear stopped enemies from attacking.
Fear forced traitors to hesitate.
Fear kept dangerous people away from those who mattered.
It was a lesson his father had carved into him when he was young.
A powerful man could not afford kindness.
Kindness created weakness.
Weakness created opportunities.
And opportunities were how people died.
For years, Adrian believed it.
Until a little girl with black shoe polish on her hands walked into his life and proved him wrong.
Because Zoe Williams had been afraid of him.
She had seen his reputation before she saw his face.
She expected anger.
Punishment.
Cruelty.
But when Adrian looked at her, he did not see a weakness.
He saw someone who had been forced to become strong too early.
Someone who had learned survival before childhood.
And that bothered him more than any enemy ever had.
The next morning, the Romano mansion was different.
The guards moved silently.
The staff avoided unnecessary conversations.
Everyone knew something had happened.
Nobody knew exactly what.
But everyone understood one thing.
Adrian Romano was searching for a traitor.
And when Adrian searched for someone, the entire city paid attention.
Luca entered Adrian’s office carrying a folder.
“We found something.”
Adrian looked up from the documents on his desk.
“Sit.”
Luca placed the folder down.
“The flower delivery records.”
Adrian opened it.
For twenty years, the Romano mansion had received flowers every week.
A tradition started by Adrian’s mother.
She believed a home, even one surrounded by danger, should still have something beautiful inside it.
After she died, Adrian continued the tradition.
The florist was one of the few outside companies trusted enough to enter the estate.
“Who delivers them?” Adrian asked.
Luca looked at the report.
“Thomas Bell.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
The name was familiar.
Very familiar.
“Thomas has worked with my family since I was sixteen.”
“Yes.”
“Background?”
“Clean.”
Adrian leaned back.
“That means nothing.”
Luca nodded.
They both knew.
The most dangerous people were often the ones who looked perfect.
“What did you find?”
Luca turned the page.
“Thomas changed his delivery route six months ago.”
“Why?”
“He claimed it was because of construction.”
Adrian looked at the date.
Six months.
Again.
The same timeline.
“Anyone confirm?”
“No.”
Silence.
Adrian tapped his finger against the desk.
Six months ago.
Marco began betraying him.
The security failures started.
The questions about his movements began.
And now someone connected to the mansion changed their routine.
Too many coincidences.
There were no coincidences.
Not in his world.
A knock interrupted them.
Before Adrian answered, the door opened slightly.
Zoe appeared.
She held her teddy bear.
Her hair was tied back now.
Someone had given her clean clothes.
A simple blue sweater and jeans.
She looked less frightened than yesterday.
But still cautious.
Adrian noticed she stopped at the doorway.
Waiting for permission.
“Come in.”
She slowly entered.
Luca smiled slightly.
The sight was unusual.
Almost nobody smiled around Adrian.
Especially not in his office.
Zoe walked toward the desk.
“What are you doing?”
Adrian looked at the papers.
“Working.”
“On the bad people?”
Luca looked away, hiding a small reaction.
Adrian studied her.
“You understand more than you should.”
Zoe shrugged.
“Mama says grown-ups think kids don’t notice things.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Your mother is right.”
Zoe looked surprised.
“You agree?”
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared.
“Most adults forget children are always watching.”
That sentence stayed with him.
Because it was exactly what happened.
Everyone ignored Zoe.
Everyone except the truth.
She had seen what others refused to see.
A guard outside the gate.
A frightened mother.
A secret message.
A betrayal.
“Can I ask something?”
Adrian nodded.
“Why are you so scared of me?”
The question was direct.
Honest.
No adult would have asked him that.
They were too careful.
Zoe looked down.
“Because people talk.”
“What do they say?”
She hesitated.
“That you’re dangerous.”
Adrian said nothing.
“They say bad people disappear when you’re angry.”
The room became quiet.
Luca glanced at Adrian.
Waiting.
But Adrian did not react with anger.
Instead, he looked at the child.
“Do you believe them?”
Zoe thought for a long moment.
Then she shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
She looked at him.
“Because you helped Mama.”
Simple.
No calculation.
No hidden reason.
Just truth.
Adrian looked away.
He had spent years hearing people describe him.
Monster.
King.
Enemy.
Nobody had ever described him as someone who helped.
Not until now.
Before he could answer, an alarm sounded.
Not the mansion alarm.
A personal security alert.
Luca immediately checked his phone.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Adrian stood.
“What happened?”
Luca looked at him.
“Marco.”
The name changed the atmosphere instantly.
“He was found.”
“Where?”
“Outside the old warehouse district.”
Adrian grabbed his coat.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Then we go.”
Luca nodded.
Zoe stepped forward.
“Are you leaving?”
Adrian stopped.
The question sounded strangely familiar.
Like the first night.
Please don’t leave me.
He looked at her.
“I have to handle something.”
Her expression changed slightly.
Fear returned.
Not because of him.
Because she thought everyone eventually left.
Adrian noticed.
He walked closer.
“Zoe.”
She looked up.
“I’m coming back.”
She stared at him.
“Promise?”
Again.
That word.
Adrian paused.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
This time, the promise felt different.
Not like an obligation.
Like a choice.
“I promise.”
Two hours later, Adrian stood inside an abandoned warehouse on the edge of Chicago.
Marco was sitting in a chair.
His face bruised.
His expensive security uniform replaced with dirty clothes.
He looked nothing like the confident man who had entered the shoe room.
The traitor looked defeated.
Adrian walked closer.
“Who hired you?”
Marco laughed weakly.
“You think it’s that simple?”
Adrian stopped in front of him.
“Yes.”
Marco looked up.
“You always thought you controlled everything.”
A pause.
“That was your mistake.”
Adrian’s expression remained cold.
“My mistake?”
Marco smiled.
“You never noticed the people closest to you.”
The words were meant to hurt.
But Adrian already knew.
That was why they mattered.
“Who?”
Marco looked away.
“I can’t.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“Can’t?”
A quiet moment passed.
Then Adrian said:
“Or won’t?”
Marco said nothing.
Adrian studied him.
The man was afraid.
Not of Adrian.
Of someone else.
That was the answer.
Someone above Marco.
Someone powerful enough to control him.
A phone on the table suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Luca picked it up.
No number.
Unknown.
Adrian answered.
Silence.
Then a voice.
“You’re protecting the girl.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Who are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“You always were predictable, Adrian.”
The voice continued.
“She saw something she shouldn’t have.”
Adrian looked at Marco.
Then at the warehouse entrance.
“Where is my enemy?”
The voice ignored the question.
“Give me the child, and this ends.”
The room went completely silent.
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“No.”
A pause.
The voice sounded amused.
“Think carefully.”
Adrian looked at Marco.
Then at Luca.
Then he remembered Zoe standing in his office.
A little girl who had trusted him.
A little girl who believed he was different.
His answer came immediately.
“You made one mistake.”
The voice paused.
“What?”
Adrian’s eyes became cold.
“You thought she was my weakness.”
Silence.
“She isn’t.”
He looked toward the city lights outside the warehouse.
“She’s the reason you lost.”
The call ended.
But Adrian already understood.
The war had changed.
The enemy was no longer hiding.
And now Adrian Romano had something he had never had before.
May you like
Something stronger than fear.
A reason to fight.
