Chapter 4 - The Enemy Inside The Mansion

Adrian Romano had spent his entire life learning one rule.

Never trust a quiet room.

Quiet rooms were where secrets lived.

They were where people hid evidence, planned betrayals, and waited for the right moment to strike.

And tonight, his mansion was the quietest it had ever been.

The power had returned thirty minutes after the discovery.

The lights came back.

The cameras restarted.

The security systems rebooted.

But the feeling inside the Romano estate remained unchanged.

Something was wrong.

Adrian stood in his private office, staring at the security footage displayed across multiple monitors.

The screens showed empty hallways.

The front gate.

The garden.

The service entrance.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

That was the problem.

Someone had erased the truth and replaced it with a performance.

Behind him, a doctor examined Zoe’s mother in the guest room.

For the first time in years, Adrian had allowed someone outside his inner circle to enter the mansion without a background check.

A sick woman.

A little girl.

Two people who should never have been involved in his world.

And yet they were the only ones who had warned him.

The most dangerous secret in his empire had not been discovered by his best soldiers.

Not by his intelligence team.

Not by his most experienced advisors.

It had been discovered by a child with crayons.

Adrian looked down at the drawing sitting on his desk.

The paper was slightly wrinkled from Zoe’s small hands.

A simple picture.

A gate.

A man.

A weapon.

A red mark across his face.

Most people would have ignored it.

Adrian almost had.

That thought bothered him.

Because if he had arrived five minutes later…

Ten minutes later…

Would Zoe still have been alive?

Would her mother?

Would anyone have known what was waiting outside?

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

His second-in-command, Luca Bennett, stepped inside.

Luca had worked beside Adrian for seven years.

Unlike most men around Adrian, Luca did not fear silence.

He understood it.

“Marco is gone,” Luca said.

Adrian did not turn.

“Gone where?”

“Unknown.”

That answer was exactly what he expected.

“His house?”

“Empty.”

“His phone?”

“Destroyed.”

Adrian slowly looked at him.

“Destroyed?”

Luca nodded.

“Found near the river.”

A pause.

“He knew.”

Adrian looked back at the screens.

“He knew I would find out.”

Luca placed a folder on the desk.

“We checked every access log. Marco entered the east security room at 11:43 p.m.”

Adrian frowned.

“What happened at 11:43?”

“The cameras went offline.”

“And before that?”

Luca hesitated.

Adrian noticed.

“What?”

“There’s something else.”

Luca opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Security records.

Financial documents.

Adrian picked up the first photograph.

It showed Marco meeting someone.

A man whose face was partially hidden.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Who is this?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“You’re telling me someone met with my head of security inside my own city and we don’t know who he is?”

Luca lowered his eyes.

“No, sir.”

The answer irritated Adrian.

Not because Luca had failed.

Because someone had been careful enough to hide.

Adrian turned another page.

Bank transfers.

Large amounts.

Multiple payments.

Different accounts.

Different countries.

But one pattern.

All of them connected to Marco.

“How long?”

Luca looked at him.

“Six months.”

The room became silent.

Six months.

For six months, a traitor had been standing inside his home.

Eating at his table.

Walking through his halls.

Receiving his trust.

Adrian’s expression remained calm.

But Luca knew him well enough to recognize the anger beneath it.

“Sir…”

Adrian raised a hand.

“No.”

He placed the documents down.

“Not yet.”

Luca understood.

Adrian was not angry because someone betrayed him.

People betrayed him all the time.

He was angry because someone had endangered innocent people.

Especially a child.

A soft knock came from the door.

Both men turned.

Zoe stood there.

Still wearing the same pink pajamas.

Her hair was messy.

Her teddy bear was tucked under one arm.

She looked much smaller inside the massive mansion.

Adrian’s expression softened slightly.

“Zoe.”

She looked at the papers on the desk.

Then at him.

“Did you catch him?”

Adrian studied her.

Children were often protected from difficult truths.

But Zoe had already been forced to face too much.

“Not yet.”

Her face fell.

“He’s coming back?”

Adrian immediately noticed the fear.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for her mother.

“No.”

His answer was firm.

“He won’t hurt you.”

Zoe watched him carefully.

“Promise?”

The question stopped him.

Promises were dangerous.

Adrian rarely made them.

Because he knew what happened when powerful men made promises they could not keep.

But this child was not asking as a business deal.

She was asking because she needed something to believe in.

“Yes.”

His voice was quiet.

“I promise.”

Zoe nodded.

Then she looked at the drawing.

“You believed me.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“You believed my picture.”

A small smile almost appeared on her face.

“Everyone says kids make things up.”

Adrian glanced at the drawing.

“Sometimes they do.”

Zoe lowered her head.

“Most people don’t listen to me.”

The sentence was simple.

But Adrian heard everything behind it.

A child who had learned that her voice did not matter.

A child who had learned to stay quiet.

A child who had learned adults only noticed her when she made mistakes.

Adrian leaned back slightly.

“Zoe.”

She looked up.

“Who taught you how to shine shoes?”

“My mama.”

“Why?”

She shrugged.

“Because she said every job matters.”

Adrian looked away for a moment.

A servant’s daughter.

A child from a small room inside a mansion filled with wealth.

Yet she carried more dignity than many powerful people he knew.

A loud alarm suddenly echoed through the office.

Everyone froze.

Luca immediately reached for his weapon.

Adrian looked at the security screen.

One camera had activated.

The east gate.

The exact location from Zoe’s drawing.

The screen showed darkness.

Then movement.

A figure appeared near the fence.

Adrian stepped closer.

The image was unclear.

But the posture was familiar.

Luca looked at him.

“Is that—”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s eyes became cold.

“Marco.”

The traitor was standing outside his own gate.

Alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the camera zoomed slightly.

And Adrian saw something in Marco’s hand.

A phone.

Marco lifted it toward the camera.

A message appeared on the screen.

Not from Marco.

From someone else.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN NEW YORK.

The room became silent.

Adrian stared at the message.

The betrayal was bigger than Marco.

Much bigger.

Marco was not the enemy.

He was only the door.

Someone else was standing behind it.

Someone who knew Adrian’s movements.

Someone who knew his mansion.

Someone who knew exactly how to reach him.

Zoe slowly stepped closer.

“Mr. Romano?”

Adrian looked down.

She pointed at the screen.

“That’s the bad man?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

Because for the first time in a long time, he realized something.

The enemy outside the gate was not the biggest threat.

The biggest threat was the person who had convinced everyone inside the mansion to look the other way.

Adrian picked up the drawing.

The child had not drawn just one man.

She had drawn a warning.

A warning nobody else saw.

He turned to Luca.

“Lock down the mansion.”

Luca nodded.

“Everyone?”

Adrian looked around the room.

At the walls.

The doors.

The people who worked for him.

The people who knew his secrets.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Everyone.”

May you like

Because tonight, Adrian Romano was no longer protecting his empire from enemies outside.

He was protecting it from the enemy who had already walked through the front door.
