Chapter 5 - The Man Who Lied To Everyone

The photograph loaded slowly.
For a few seconds, there was only darkness on my phone screen.
Then the image appeared.
And my entire world collapsed.
It was Claire.
Standing beside Daniel.
But that wasn't the part that made me stop breathing.
It was the person standing behind them.
The person whose face I had spent years trying to forget.
My father.
Richard Cole.
The man who died when I was twenty-three.
The man whose funeral I attended.
The man whose grave I visited every year.
The man who was supposed to have no connection to any of this.
I stared at the screen.
My fingers went numb.
"No..."
Daniel watched my reaction.
He didn't look surprised.
He looked guilty.
"You remember him."
I looked up.
"What is this?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
That was worse.
Because I knew my brother.
Even after fifteen years.
I knew when he was hiding something.
And right now, he was hiding everything.
"You need to listen to me, Adrian."
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
"Listen to you?"
I pointed at the photograph.
"You disappeared."
I pointed at Lily.
"You had a daughter I never knew existed."
I pointed at my phone.
"And now you're standing here showing me a picture of our dead father."
My voice became louder.
"You don't get to tell me to listen."
The old train station echoed with my anger.
Lily stood between us.
Watching two brothers who were supposed to be strangers.
Daniel looked down.
"I know."
Those two words made me angrier.
"I spent fifteen years thinking you were dead."
"I know."
"I blamed myself."
"I know."
"I buried you."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"And I let you."
The answer hurt more than any excuse could have.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily stepped forward.
"Uncle Adrian."
I looked at her.
She had never called me that before.
"Your brother didn't want to hurt you."
I stared at Daniel.
"Then why did he?"
Daniel looked toward the empty platform.
"Because if I came back, they would come after you."
"Who?"
He didn't answer.
Again.
The same silence.
The same fear.
I was starting to understand something.
Everyone in this story knew more than me.
Claire.
Daniel.
Even Lily.
I was the last person to discover the truth about my own life.
Daniel walked toward the bench near the platform.
He looked older than I remembered.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
Like fifteen years of hiding had taken something from him.
"After our father died, you thought his company was everything."
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with this?"
"Everything."
He looked at me.
"You believed Dad built his empire honestly."
I said nothing.
Because that was exactly what I believed.
Richard Cole was a legend.
A self-made businessman.
A man who taught me that power came from discipline.
A man who taught me that trust was dangerous.
Daniel pulled the flash drive from my hand.
"You need to see what was on this."
I didn't stop him.
He connected it to an old laptop inside the station office.
The screen flickered.
A folder appeared.
No password.
No protection.
Just one name.
"PROJECT LILY."
My eyes moved to the child beside me.
Lily noticed.
She looked away.
My stomach tightened.
"What is that?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of files.
Documents.
Photos.
Videos.
Records.
My name appeared everywhere.
Adrian Cole.
I stepped closer.
The first file was dated twelve years ago.
A year after Daniel disappeared.
I opened it.
It was a report.
A private investigation report.
About me.
About my company.
About my family.
But the author wasn't a detective.
It was Claire.
I read the first line.
"Subject: Adrian Cole."
My heart started racing.
"Claire investigated me?"
Daniel nodded.
"She wasn't investigating you."
"Then what?"
"She was protecting you."
I looked at him.
"From what?"
Daniel stared at the screen.
"From Dad."
The words felt impossible.
"My father is dead."
Daniel didn't react.
"He died publicly."
A cold silence filled the room.
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel opened another file.
A video.
The date was two years after my father's funeral.
I watched.
The screen showed a dark room.
A man sitting in a chair.
I couldn't see his face.
Then he spoke.
One sentence.
And I knew the voice immediately.
"Adrian still believes the story."
I stopped breathing.
Because it was my father's voice.
Daniel closed the laptop.
I stepped back.
"No."
"Adrian."
"No."
I shook my head.
"This is impossible."
"I know."
"My father died."
"I know."
"You were missing."
"I know."
"Claire disappeared."
Daniel looked at me.
"And that's why she was in danger."
I stared at him.
Trying to force my mind to accept something that couldn't be real.
"What story?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not Claire's handwriting.
Not Daniel's.
My father's.
My hands shook as I took it.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
But they destroyed everything I believed.
"Adrian,
If you are reading this, Daniel failed to keep the secret hidden.
You were never supposed to know what happened that night.
You were never supposed to know what Claire discovered.
And most importantly...
You were never supposed to know who Lily's real mother was."
I looked up.
"What does this mean?"
Daniel's face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Adrian..."
"What?"
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"Your father wasn't protecting a secret."
The lights above the station suddenly went out.
Darkness covered everything.
Lily grabbed my hand.
Daniel stood immediately.
Someone was inside the station.
I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Daniel whispered:
"They found us."
I looked toward the entrance.
A figure appeared in the doorway.
A familiar voice filled the darkness.
"Adrian."
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who should have been impossible.
Someone who had been dead longer than Daniel.
May you like
The person stepped into the light.
And the first thing I saw was the face of the woman I thought I would never see again.
